For those who refuse to game on a PC, what holds you back?

The social aspect. By that I mean pcs are generally in a secluded room where you're all alone peering at a little screen with headphones on.

Consoles though, big tv, big stereo, and your girlfriend can sit beside you (and play on tv while you play 3ds..). Essentially consoles are far better when you have friends over a lot.

Only reason why I still have my PS3. Though have to prep that thing a day or two before in case it has to download or install everything, thing is slow as heck.

Though, wife and I play in a office room that we put up on our own machines. I would share pictures but she'd be mad as she isn't dressed for the occasion. I mean you can choose to be a secluded person with headphones on in a dark lit room. I don't, because I am already pale enough.

I'm big on comfy couch and convenience and wife-friendly. My PS4 just works. Every time. Every game supports the controller 100% out the box. It just does.

And Sony's first party line up and Japanese exclusives are exactly my bag. I've no interest in the big PC exclusives because they're simply not in genres I'm interested in. Most of the best indie games eventually come to consoles if they're controller friendly.

And whilst I realise there's a ton of games on PC that I can't play on PS4, they're simply not as important to me as the likes of Ratchet and Clank or God of War or The Last Guardian etc. And I don't even have enough time to play all the great PS4 games that are releasing as it is.

I used to be a big PC gamer in the 90s but I'm so past that now. Back then I just ended up spending more time tweaking the games than actually playing them. I do think about building a gaming PC every now and again, and I'm always intrigued about it, but it'd be as more of a side hobby. I'm just too mentally invested in PS4 this gen and it never stops giving back. This year will be phenomenal.

It also doesn't help that I don't know a single person IRL who plays PC games, but all my mates own either a PS4 or XBO and are very active on those.

What? No. This is maybe your perception of PC gaming, but it has very little to do with reality. People keep their PC:s in the living room so they can easily watch movies with their friends and family for example. And while I can't back this up with lists, I think PC has as much if not more of local multiplayer games than PS4 for example. PC can be a media center and not just used for gaming. And don't tell me that you can't fit a PC in your living room if it has room for big stereo, big TV and a big console.

My perception is that PC is in the living room for the tech savy adults to use, while gaming console is in the kids room like other toys. /s

I built my gaming PC almost 2 years ago now and I love it. I still keep the console's around for the exclusives.

The reason my friends haven't done the same is they don't have the money/know-how to build a decent rig.

Totally understand that thought process, despite some of it being flawed. PC controller support, as I showed in my video, has greatly improved. Xbox 360/Xbox One controller support is native in nearly every game outside of RTS games. Dualshock 4 is also natively supported in many games, including Steam; which has native DS4 and Xbox controller support.

I too sit at a couch on my consoles and my PC. With my keyboard or the DS4 touchpad acting as a mouse.

People need to stop using that argument/reasoning as it really doesn't hold water anymore.

Big couch gaming image for effect. Mind you, this is 3 years old now and I'm on an even bigger TV in a different room.

I've literally never hooked my pc up to a monitor or played at a desk. I have it hooked up to a big 4k tv and surround sound, most nights when Im playing my gf is on the couxh next to me playing 3ds.

I have friends over all the time and we play Mario Kart double dash in 4k on my couch.

That is skyrim running 4k from my Pc on my 140" 4k projector, with 7.1 surround.... My wife sits and watches all the time. All of it is done thru the Pc man.. Just saying you can the same with a Pc

Why are so many games listed as 'partial controller support' on Steam?

I don't want a keyboard or mouse anywhere near my living room, that's my whole point. They belong in the office. And don't pretend I'm not going to have to do the occasional Alt-Tab or Ctrl-Alt-Delete from time to time. I realise games support controllers but that doesn't mean you're never going to have to use a keyboard or mouse for some things, whether installing or sorting issues or whatever.

The OP was quite clear. I was honest with my personal reasons, which I still hold valid. This thread seems more like a trap to beat console players up until they join the PC brigade.

Different strokes.

Too complicated. I want to spend 0 time troubleshooting.

If someone wants to become my personal PC setter upper then I may think about it!

Well it's $60 on Amazon, $60 on Walmart, $48 on Best Buy, $70 on Newegg... That's just the current going rate for an Xbox One controller w/ wireless Windows adapter. Plus all this just to replace my Xbox 360 controller, which works fine, just to get a power button. So really it's $48 to $70 to just get a power button on a controller because that's about the only thing I'm going to gain from updating my Xbox 360 controller to a Xbox One controller.
Why not use your mobile and an app to just wake up on lan? Save yourself money and use your existing 360 controller, my xbone controller lasted 30 hours from playing Witcher 3 lol, got it free with Oculus Rift free Kickstarter edition so they wouldn't replace it, fair enough but I won't be rushing to buy one anytime soon. Have 2 wireless 360 controllers for 7-8 years with no issue

Different strokes.

Well sure different strokes, but this seems like an odd obsession to have. I really don't see any basis for it. Many games (certain genres) are best played with a mouse and a keyboard, so they are very much viable controllers for gaming. Not just for work.

How much did you pay for that PC?

The reason people say PCs are usually in a secluded room is because they typically can't afford more than one, so that one goes in the office. It doesn't go in the living room because people don't want to work on Excel spreadsheets and Word docs from there on their couch. For these discussions you have to shift your point of view to that of the general public, not someone who is going to be 4k gaming on a 140" projector.

They are very viable indeed, but just not ideal on a comfy couch. I don't have an obsession, and it's not odd to NOT want to sit on your couch with a mouse and keyboard on your lap, I assure you quite the opposite.

Id say I fall more into the general public. I dont even have a room in my house for an office. I work in food service and dont ever use excel, but I do word processing from my couch all the time. Between me and my gf though we actually do have 2 pcs, but theyre both in the living room.

I bought a lap desk for like 40 dollars and m+kb gaming from the couch is super comfy. It even has cubby holes for my headphones and controllers.

Edit: I've spent hours and hours at a time snuggled up in a blanket playing overwatch on my couch while my gf plays next to me.

Wait, are you saying you have your computer hooked up to your TV and you use it to do Word processing. If so great, but that isn't typical.

Yeah that's great but you're all missing my original post. The PS4 does me just fine with the DS4, I'm happy with that. I don't want no cubby holes! Just leave me alone! I wish I'd never come in this thread!

:O

Yeah? Windows scaling is a thing you know. Text is easily readable on a 55 inch screen. I even make music via ableton and protools from my couch.

I want to play with a controller and I'm not stupid enough to play with a controller against players using a mouse and keyboard.
This is honestly the ONLY con that I have with Pc gaming. I've been playing Overwatch lately and recently made the switch to keyboard and mouse. It's a trip but I'm getting better, I think I should uhh upgrade from my stock keyboard and mouse tho, haha.

And for peeps saying graphics don't matter... They didn't for me either until I got a 980ti. High/Ultra settings and 60+fps at 1440p is the real deal. Now I won't even touch an Xbox One game

It's really weird seeing people talk about all the work they'd have to put into getting games to run.

I've literally never had an issue where I had to modify a file or whatever for a modern game. Closest thing is problems with mods and running some old DOSbox games.

You can tell who hasn't had a gaming pc for a while or even at all.

Yeah kb+m is hard to get used to but once you do its hard to go back (for fps) stick with it, eventually you'll hit a point where controllers feel terrible by comparison.

I still prefer controllers for action games and platformers though.

Def feel your second point too. For me I can play 30fps ps4 games, but it takes a solid 20 minutes to adjust to, and when I go back to PC it's like "holy fuck!"

Playing bloodborne right now, and jesus christ that game is a blurry stuttery mess. I can definitely adjust to it and deal, but ever since I got a PC, if a game is multiplat, ps4 is not even an option I consider.

I'd never beat someone up for their preference because that's just dumb. I do, however, like to be sure everyone is on the up and up. No false info or what we like to call them now, alternative facts XD.

Partial support can be a bunch of stuff sadly. Typically that means that the game plays fine with a controller but is meant to be used via keyboard and mouse, so there are some liberties.

It's absolutely possible. It's just nowhere near as comfortable. Couch gaming console games designed for controller use is easy comfy gaming. Having to whip out the keyboard, mouse, mousepad, wireless or not is just not as fun on a couch unless you have a 'couch desk' set up which defeats the point.

This is coming from an avid PC gamer that just upgraded his PC to 1080's in SLI. I only PC game at the desk. Because it's comfortable there. I did the whole TV PC thing, and it's just not as comfortable without the desk. Tucking your keyboard away in a corner and having to get it out for updates, drivers or whatever else Windows requires at any given time that won't allow the use of a controller defeats the purpose.

I love PC gaming. But it's just not as comfy unless you are at a desk. Sometimes you just want to pick up a controller and veg out. It's ok to concede this one point.

True, but that's why I have multiple setups. The TV PC for controller PC gaming and my main PC for when I need that keyboard/mouse, 3440x1440p action. But again, totally not denouncing consoles, I have 2x of everything, for me and the kiddies. I just find them both equally enjoyable. But then again, PCs are and have been my hobby for GOD knows how long.

That and the price are the only arguments I can understand. Everything else is lack of knowledge or just anti-change.
W10 sucks for gaming and for some reason many are recommending it instead of W7 or 8.1. And yeah prices. Every recommended sub 600$ build costs two to three times as much where I live while xbox one price is alright (ps4 costs 50% more than xbone).

for anyone amazed that I do word processing from my couch, it looks like this.

Actually it's probably easier to read than that even, I'm typing this from my couch right now. Camera makes it look further away/smaller. That's a wii sensor bar at the bottom for scale (Mario Galaxy in 4k sure is amazing too!)

And console prevents you from watching TV when someone plays on it. And personally I know people in relationships who live with their companion who have a TV and a monitor for the PC, both in the living room. So when someone wants to watch TV or play on a console, PC is still hooked up to a monitor. I assume you don't know such cases personally, but it's an actual thing people can and will do.

I just discussed this last weekend with one of the couples, the lady of the house can decide everything else regarding furnishing and decorations. But one living room corner is reserved for the PC setup. They seem happy, so the PC isn't breaking their relationship.

And while maybe it's not typical, it very well could be. There's nothing stopping people from doing it. Times change, the time of living room PC:s is here. Let's not try to fight against it.

You admit that graphics didn't matter until you got a 980ti. Ok great. For everybody that has a PC capable of high end gaming, it matters. However for everybody else, aka the vast majority of console gamers, PC level graphics still don't matter.

It's more about the versatility and perfomance than just graphics. People play indie games and old games on their high end rigs too. And as I've stated few times in thread, look at the reaction to Nintendo Switch. Seems like graphics matter to console gamers too. When it's lower than their machine, but not when it's more. Because ofcourse, what you have now is exactly the sweet spot.

What's your definition of typical though? In my experience, anyone else using my TV when I need to use it isn't typical. I use it as a gaming device, an office tool, a music studio, a media machine and a neogaf browser.

I am a 28 year old man living with my girlfriend. She wants to watch TV while I need to work on something? No problem, we have 3 tvs in the house, and multiple tablets.

too much choice on pc: overchoice and the anxiety that accompanies fear of making the wrong choice. It starts with choosing a case from the hundreds on the market and ends with trying to figure out which one of the fifty Skyrim mods is crashing the game. Gaming should be relaxing, not a source of anxiety.

That is also why I've given up on android and am in the embrace of Apple.

I'd argue that this is more typical than you might think. We have a 4k tv with my pc hooked up, and a small monitor with my gfs pc hooked up. It's literally not even an issue.

Also your point that a console also hogs the TV is spot on. The solution? 2 tvs, or another room with a tv. How many people only have one TV and don't have tablets? THAT seems atypical to me.

I don't refuse at all. I used to a lot but I'm just in a computer chair at a computer all day. I like playing on a TV, relaxing on the couch hanging out with my dog and putting my feet up. Also with the internet and IMs etc on PC it's just much more distracting. Mostly tho just to get away from the PC for a couple hours a day.

Also I like collecting physical release games, which is a bit easier with console stuff. So I want to play the games I buy at retail price (Steam prices are great tho)

- I don't want to set up an expensive PC just to play prettier games. I'm fine with a decent PC because all I need in my PC are PnC games, The Sims, and programming stuff.
- I want an easy setup
- Comfy Couch

Last time I checked, editing a Word doc is not the same thing as playing a video game. The whole point of my comment was to point out how inefficient it is to use your living room TV as an office monitor. Even you admit this by explaining how people have a separate monitor available so as to not cause this conflict. If the entirety of your argument is that people should hook their only PC up to their main TV, then I'm going to point out that that isn't a solution most people can use.

Yeah it could be, but I don't want to make assumptions. But I can talk from my own personal experience. I'm bummed that I didn't take a picture of the living room when I visited my friend last friday, I thought of it. Just to have it for a thread like this. :D But then I didn't.

It's pretty frustrating to see people using "I like playing on the couch with my feet up" over and over again when there are pages and pages of people saying they play PC on the couch with their feet up.

A lot of people simply don't have the money, to invest in 2 ecosystems. Buying a $400 console and building a $1k computer is no joke for a lot of consumers.

I guess you could describe me as a they mostly console game at because I will occasionally game on the PC. What's me from being a full-time is stupid things like the lack of controller support for XCOM 2. There's no good reason why there was no controller support for XCOM 2 at launch.

This is a good point, and probably the most relevant one.

I still play a lot of games on my PS4 simply because I already own them there and am not going to repurchase on PC unless they are some of my favorites.

PC gaming is for people with the funds to support it.

Having said that though, I'm a mostly paycheck to paycheck kind of fellow, and a $1k PC didn't kill me.

Granted I really wanted it, and was worried about spending so much, but it was worth every penny.

If you work full time and are interested, I say go for it. For students and people with financial hardships though, obviously a console (that you most likely already own by this point) will do you just fine.

PC will be there if and when you have the money to jump in.
