PS4 System Software Update 4.50 Features Detailed

These have been probably asked and answered but I just want to know if:

1. Does this work with disc installs or just digital games?
2. Can the hard drive with its contents be used on another PS4 without the hard drive being formatted?
3. Is there a copy option or the PS4 just move the contents from internal to external and vice versa?

If I had to guess it will be just like the XBOX ONE..I have an external drive and when I put in a disc everything goes to internal..and there is also a copy option where I can send apps/games from external to internal and vise versa

just done some tests
1 you can use disc installs or digital, both work.
2 i don't know as i don't have another ps4 to test but you can unplug it and plug it back in no problem, just make sure you hold ps button and click stop using extended storage so you can safely remive it. Someone else said you can use it on any ps4 with your account on but i don't know this for certain.
3 there is a move option under storage in settings, you can select and move as much as you like in either direction.

How is the speed on the external drive compared to internal? So how does it work. I plug in an external drive already formatted to FAT32 and the PS4 does the rest?

i haven't noticed any difference in speed, it appears to load the same but i don't really have a way to test it well.
You plug in a drive, go to settings, devices, usb storage then select format as extended storage then it's good to go.

Happy about the external HDD thing even though I have a 2TB internal that's only half full. I might go ahead and spring for a 4TB external and just use it exclusively for future proofing.

Goodbye physical games. We had a good run together.

Until:
- PSN becomes more like the PC digital ecosystem, with regular sales on modern titles (not just flash sales on old titles or poor performers), and
- PSN adjusts how their support protocols work, preventing entire libraries of digital games from being "locked" for security reasons, and
- The system gives me the option to loan out my digital license temporarily to others, and;
- The system preserves the right of first sale, allowing me to resell my digital license, physical games are still significantly superior.

I live with the digital only ecosystems on PC because that's really all that exists, there are various avenues of competition, and online features are usually baked in at no extra cost. But I'm not going to fall for it on console closed ecosystems where they rarely drop the price of retail titles, never drop the price on DLC, continue to charge for online services, et cetera.

TL;DR - Until THIS becomes a reality with digital licenses on PSN, I'm sticking to physical where I still have consumer rights.

You have good points but the game changer for me was that with digital titles I can share them with my spouse. For example, we paid for one copy of Battlefield 1 on launch day and can both play it at the same time on two separate PS4s. Only one person has to have PS+ and both people can play online. And the PSN sales now more or less match steam sale prices. The amount of money we're saving on games by going digital is crazy but I recognize that having two core gamers in a house is still somewhat uncommon so it's not something everybody can see as big of a cost savings (relative) as we do.

Yes it does, I just took my external hot off my Xbox one plugged it in and the option to format the hdd is there.
what format was the drive? Pretty sure it didn't before unless it was already a recognised format. I had to format two on a pc to exfat or fat32 for the ps4 to recognise that they existed. Guessing that the xbox formatted it to exfat?.

very stupid question.

I currently have a normal ps4.

If i add an external drive and download stuff onto that, and then one day i decide to get a pro, would it be as simple as just plugging it into the pro?

Would I need to do some account setup stuff or something?

i think it should be ok as long as you have your account on the pro and possibly set as primary but i sold my original ps4 so can't test it!. I did see another person comment that the drive could be used on any ps4 with your account on.

I'm not sure whatever Xbox uses, the formatting thing might be sort of hidden for some reason I found it by clicking the notification that popped up about external hdd. Because at first it was showing hdd not supported.

Unfortunately you can't, nor can you crop the image. For what it is tho it's pretty good, I'm really liking my black wood background. Hopefully down the line we have more options and customization.

yep. also another annoying thing is that you can't change icons color.
dark blue color doesn't work well with some custom wallpapers

Well exfat is microsoft standard so i guess your drive was that so the ps4 recognised it so then you can format it. But pretty sure when a drive is not at a ps4 recognised standard like exfat or fat32 then the ps4 diesn't see it at all so you can do nothing until it's formatted first. This may possibly have changed at some point but was definitely the case before.

I really like the new feature for comparing the save data in the cloud and on the system. Makes it a lot easier to download and upload the correct save. Would be nice if the PS4 would download the save automatically when I install a game again, though.

Will a PS4 take a 3.1 USB Hdd ? They specify 3.0 but im assuming 3.1 is ok too . Thinking about picking a pro up in next few months and they reccomend a 3.1 for that so just wondering if it will do both

yes, they're pretty much the same thing except 3.1 has a higher transfer rate but will only transfer at the rate of 3.0 when plugged into it.

XB1 uses NTFS (possibly slightly tweaked), with a non-standard boot signature, which renders the disks unrecognisable by systems expecting the standard signature.

So has anyone tested how "locked down" the Hard Drive storage is. I have two PS4s and I can test it tomorrow but I need some sleep..waiting for that beta account was exhausting!

Lets say you insert a disk .Then how do you choose where to install to?Internal vs External.
Is this an initial one time setup, or you can choose everytime before downloading or installing a game?

ah ok, never owned an xbox so i have no idea. I do know that drives are usually ntfs and that playstations wouldn't recognise them at all unless they were a format it used.. mine wouldn't show up at all until i formatted them on a pc first. It is possible that it was changed on ps4 at some point. I will do some testing later with an empty drive.

At any time you can go into settings, storage, press option button and choose "application install location" then select either system storage or extended stirage as the primary install location.

When you run out of space on the internal HDD does it automatically offer to install it in the external, or do you have to manually change to it in the settings if you're out of space?

I plugged in a freshly exFAT-formatted Seagate and I can't see it in Settings - Storage. Any other way to check the external HDD? Not sure what I'm doing wrong.

Edit: Nvm I'm dumb, it's under Settings - Devices...

Not really a fan of the updated notifications. Prefer the old way versus having everything jumbled together and having to press option to see downloads and uploads.

They could have kept it like it was and just pared down the categories.

They keep changing things that don't really need massive overhauls. Like the whats new feed they made worse in 4.0 :(

Also chaps, can you transfer your saves to the external?
Further to this, you cannot copy saves to a drive that is selected as extended storage so my guess is that it may automatically put saves on the same drive that the game is installed on so would auto download and install to whichever you have set as primary.

Yes you can. I don't want to format the second one as Extended storage because I have stuff on it but it's giving me the option.
i'll do a proper test of this but first i need to copy some stuff off a drive that isnt formatted as extended before i format it. I also want to test if i can use media files off a drive that is formatted as extended.
It may take me a while though lol
