EVO 2017 Player's Choice Game - [Ended] UMVC3 wins #SometimesEvilWins

I'm totally down for this. Having the various communities fight it out gladiatorial style for the right to survive is great entertainment, and it'd kill off weaker games like the WB and Anime games. Hell, don't even bother with the charity shit and just have it all go directly into Wiz's bank account. Sell it as crowdfunding EVO. It'd be great.
I'm completely serious
.

Pipe dream I bet the only game that did not pay to be in someway for evo line up this year was Smash because Nintendo cheaper than even MrWizad.

It's a weird thing because it's ultimately for charity, but I feel like it kind of directly undercuts the idea of Evo being a community thing when this is just directly pitting communities against each other. It doesn't really bother me but it feels like this is just Evo staff using this as a cop out to avoid getting shit from communities about their game not being included. People are STILL salty about the last one from years ago, and it's going to happen again this time (especially if Marvel doesn't make it). It's kind of messy and I don't think they should go down this route again honestly.

I get that, but Evo and the fighting genre is also about head-to-head competition with the goal of defeating your opponent and people relish in making their opponent salty, right? No one likes to lose, yet people still compete in these games. It's the nature of the beast. If they can't embrace the competitive spirit for something that goes to a good cause perhaps it's a good lesson in perspective.

This is also (and I'd say more) about what people are going to watch being played at EVO and the Sunday finals at the arena.

I mean, your post is just some disingenuous shit and I'm not sure if I should take it seriously. I don't play any of these games, I'm certainly not going to play them at EVO, so at least, to me, being spectating friendly matters.

It's not disingenuous, I'm being 100% sincere. I've always been of the mind that people who actually compete at the tournament should come before people who only watch.

EVO is about embracing head to head competition based on skill not based on bigger wallets.

Hell I would be MUCH more in favor of Pokken vs Marvel 3 community in various games. At least then it would be a game of skill.

Have you been to a recent Evo? Where they put viewers first and people at the tournament competing second.

We're seeing the "game of skill" through the donation streams and t-shirt drives and the like. It's not about who has the deeper pockets, but who can get their base fired up enough to donate and donate a lot.

Sure, but given the fact that this is all going to charity takes a lot of the edge out of that argument. If this was all going for profit, then yeah, I think it would be a more significant debate.

I think it's pretty safe to say both MvC and Pokken will make EVO just like SG and Smash did the last time there was a near 2 way tie.

One way or other the salt will be flowing around here 48 hours from now.

oh that soon? gonna reminds some friends to vote.
We're already getting another MvC this year, Pokkens the first game of its franchise with lots of potential that might get squandered if its not evidently supported on this scale.

Not getting into a semantics argument. Both communities will almost certainly be given representation at evo.

Nah, they gave Skullgirls the exhibition because it was a up-and-coming game that was being made and supported by members of the FGC. Pokken's a filler release by two companies that don't give a fuck about it anymore. Plus, even if it were to get something like an exhibition, that's still a lot less representation and exposure than having the game on all day on one of the main EVO streams as they grind through the bracket.

Thats also part of why this is important. A pokemon fighting game is such a perfect fit, and was off to a good start (and sold decently afaik?). Showing support for a new franchise with a lot of potential would lend itself well to a possible Switch version and arcade sequels. MvC Infinite would have already been a shoe in if it were released in time for EVO.

I'd rather support a game that's good (MvC) over a game that's garbage (Pokken), thank you.

Pokken is currently sitting on 4 brand new characters that the majority of the populace have yet to play. Whatever form they decide to
not
release these is the support it will get.

Based on projections from last time, I think the final score will end up being around $50K for either game. We are about roughly 40% through the donation.

It was a financial success (on wiiu no less), and with expected players regularly making top8 placings a competitive success too. They would be out of their minds to just do the one game and thats all, especially if Switch sells as well as projected.

The funny part is that if Marvel 3 actually wins this, the EVO for it might have the highest payout of them all. Marvel 3 has consistently been one of the least money hatted game at EVO with no pot bonuses from Marvel/Capcom due to licensing issues. The game is going to have a substantial pot bonus added to it from the charity ($10K I believe).

My hope is that once mario kart is released they can focus on this as the next cool port/re-release. Pokken is severely underrated and a switch push could do wonders for it IMO. I just hope thats the road they go down, this is too good of a concept to just let die on the wiiu.

They need to actually release content that was made within the lifespan of the game.

I think Player's Choice was constructed to weasel UMvC3 into top honors for another year.

When you think about what's awarded to the game that wins, they're things that directly concern Marvel players. Marvel players feel entitled to appearing on Sunday for instance. Pokken doesn't. KI doesn't. And Evo is going out of their way to make sure player's choice is on Sunday over newer games like KOF and Injustice.

And the pot bonus. If Pokken and KI won then there's a chance that publishers could contribute that themselves. Marvel on the other hand, guaranteed to need it.

That's an interesting theory, but it makes me wonder why Evo staff wouldn't have just put up Marvel 3 on the merit that the series itself has been at EVO back when it known as "Battle by the Bay". You ain't never going to see a new Street Fighter game on one of these EVO donation drives, but Marvel did end up being in one.

EDIT: A Street Fighter game not being on a main EVO lineup, and instead having a spot up to a donation drive.

So marvel can "earn" it's spot on sunday instead of people bitching it gets placed on sunday instead.

Jokes on them people are going to bitch anyways
