EVO 2017 Player's Choice Game - [Ended] UMVC3 wins #SometimesEvilWins

Coach Steve's post gave me the feels over the whole thing:

I wanna clear the air real quick.

I love Marvel, I love pokken.

Marvel and it's community changed my life and gave me some of the best friends I can ask for. Pokken gave me one of the best communities I've ever had the pleasure of being around.

I've seen people say something along the lines of whichever game wins I'll be happy. When it's in fact the complete opposite.

Let's say marvel wins. If that were to happen, I honestly don't know what it means for the Pokken Community. It loses out on a chance at the biggest stage ever (Sunday EVO) to really showcase the game and build a bigger crowd for the future.

I love the game dearly. I love the community. I'm not in the game for money or whatever the case is that people think I'm playing it. I don't care if you don't like it either. I enjoy what I enjoy.

On the other hand, if pokken were to win, EVO won't have the same feeling it would have to me. Because my good friends would either be absent, or not have much else to play and potentially win in. It just won't be as enjoyable of an experience for me.

I'm completely in the middle. I have not donated any money, and will most certainly not put myself in a situation where if it were close enough I would be the deciding factor. We find out in just a few days what happens. Either way this did a lot more damage to me than people might think. good luck both games.

Nothing at all man. I bought my shirt when there was 10 minutes left so I have no clue.

Hope for the best! Worst case is you can contact them/return the second shirt if you mistakenly get charged for two!

Yes you pay too much attention to it. There are people that hate pretty much anything in varying quantities... hell the term anime fighter is often used to lump together a bunch of traditional fighters who's communities you'd be lumping in with the Capcom crowd (which again encompasses multiple fighters). I remember how unwelcome Killer Instinct was when first announced for Evo. It is what it is, but it's not necessarily a case of people not understanding the games. If by some ungodly act the launch iteration of Street Fighter X Tekken was in this poll, looking to bump Marvel, it likely would be very unpopular too... and it wouldn't be because people don't understand SFxT.

I think most people have at least a working idea of how Smash functions, because the series is fucking huge, and if you're posting on GAF, then you've probably played at least a reasonable amount of it by now. I'd actually argue that a less recognised or understood game like Virtual On would receive less complaints, as there would be fewer people that are aware that they explicitly don't like to watch it.

Meh. There's a new one coming up anyway. One year without it wouldn't mean the end of the world.

I don't like either Marvel or Pokken but Pokken winning has more salt potential so naturally I'm rooting for Pokken.

This isn't just exclusive to Smash games or Pokken or non traditional fighting games.

This thread is a small fraction of the actual FGC and in this place you are either going to get Marvel hate or Pokken hate. It's heated times at the moment, not really a normal circumstance.

If you want to see SFV hate then just type in SFV in the GAF search browser and you will see.

I enjoy SFV, so im not gonna go looking for more hate. Already get enough negativity here :)
 
I was in the crowd at EVO 2016, and Pokken was the least excited the crowd was at the event. The rounds just felt like background noise. I'm not a big Smash guy, but I liked being at Evo for melee at 2013. I still remember getting hyped for the Ice Climber's infinite grab because that was easy enough to understand.

But Pokken's moment to moment isn't exciting at all. I play Pokemon obsessively and am familiar with all the pokemon in the game, yet the gameplay doesn't get me pumped up at all. At least with SFV, I have a love/hate relationship. I like playing it with friends, but despise watching tournaments. For Pokken, its just a void of nothingness in my soul. Perhaps if I owned a Wii U and the game and understood the mechanics, I'd understand why that Garchomp hitting a Mewtwo is mindblowing or whatever
 
I'd rather have Naruto than Pokken. I'd rather have Pokemon itself. Pokken isn't interesting to me no matter how nice the community is.
And it's not a knock to anything. I'd rather have Marvel over everything. I want to see RyanLV make everyone cry. I want to see the salt, the hype, everything. No other game is on that level.
 
Don't know if it's been posted but the Marvel Live telethon tomorrow is going to be really, really cool. $10 donation to call in to the show, UMvC3 on PS4 giveaways and a Razer Panthera giveaway every hour. Spread the word to anyone you can, let's make it huge!

Pokken Tournament is just plain boring to watch, even at high level play. I’ve played the game at a friends house and at EVO 2016 casually and it’s just not fun for me personally. I give every fighting game a chance but Pokken stands out at being my least favorite fighting game in recent memory.

Sephi22 pretty much posted my thoughts. I was also at EVO 2016 watching Pokken Tournament with my 2 best guy friends and we were just so bored to tears. I distinctly remember that the semi-finals and top 8 were running late, and the crowd near me was not excited at all for it.

Marvel 3 is a completely different fighting game, but it is just so much more exciting to watch. It’s way more fast-paced and the crowd gets hype over the game. The popoffs, salt, commentary, dropped combos, happy birthday, x-factor comebacks, and just random stuff that can happen in the game is amazing to me. Marvel 3 is and always has been my favorite game to spectate because it brings the hype every time. I got into the FGC with marvel 3 and it continues to excite to this day.

The best thing about Pokken's Top 8 was PR Rog clutching out a set on the screen next to it. It cannot be stressed enough how little the venue was feeling Pokken last Evo. It's just not a spectator game.
 
Never watched the EVO Pokken GF until now and goddamn, this is one of the hardest games to watch. The flow of gameplay is disrupted like every other second by either assists or animation flourishes or hitstop.

The appeal is definitely just Pokemon, right? Looks like it would be super annoying to play.
 
Good stuff to Max for not doing a fundraiser because he himself knows that whatever game he does one for would win. Max is a fighting game fan period. It wouldn't really be fair if he had to choose one specific game.
