EVO 2017 Player's Choice Game - [Ended] UMVC3 wins #SometimesEvilWins

Guys, I have the perfect solution:

nope, still ain't cuttin' it

Good stuff to Max for not doing a fundraiser because he himself knows that whatever game he does one for would win. Max is a fighting game fan period. It wouldn't really be fair if he had to choose one specific game.

#ARMS

Never watched the EVO Pokken GF until now and goddamn, this is one of the hardest games to watch. The flow of gameplay is disrupted like every other second by either assists or animation flourishes or hitstop.

The appeal is definitely just Pokemon, right? Looks like it would be super annoying to play.

The character in GF has an ability that relies entirely on frequent support pokemon, so yeah you're going to get a lot of that. Thought you would love the assists appearing all the time though as a marvel fan.
Half of pokken is resource management (including hidden resources like knowing if a hit will swing it from the 2d to 3d mode), so yeah its not going to make much sense to the average person. (this is probably not going to be read, I know)

News flash... people in the FGC hate every fighting game.

Marvel 3? Trash game with infinites and X factor.
SFV? Garbage game (among the most hated FGs right now).
SF4? Vortex city, Elena lul, plinks nope, OS nope.
SFxT? enough said.
Injustice? More like Injustass.
GG/BB?? Get that anime trash out of my face.
Skullgirls? Don't want to be on the FBI list.

This isn't just exclusive to Smash games or Pokken or non traditional fighting games.

Speaking from the perspective of a Smash player, I always felt that the hate Smash received was, well, different. So many people in the FGC did (and to a certain extent still do) not consider it to even be a fighting game.

The Smash series was ostracized from the rest of the FGC for a long while for a reason, you know. It was given a different, more hostile treatment than even the most esoteric fighting games, like Arcana Hearts 3.

Melee getting into EVO 2013 was what finally broke that barrier, and I'm forever grateful for that.

Simple mode French Firebrand.

Melee doesn't really get hate anymore. FGC has pretty much embraced it. People will make fun of it here and there but it's part of the inner circle. Mango is like the Daigo of his game and people just want to see him win another one.

it does, but its mostly from smash 4 people on gaf

That's true. Only Smash 4 really get hate now. It's really boring to watch compared to Melee.

I think Player's Choice was constructed to weasel UMvC3 into top honors for another year.

When you think about what's awarded to the game that wins, they're things that directly concern Marvel players. Marvel players feel entitled to appearing on Sunday for instance. Pokken doesn't. KI doesn't. And Evo is going out of their way to make sure player's choice is on Sunday over newer games like KOF and Injustice.

And the pot bonus. If Pokken and KI won then there's a chance that publishers could contribute that themselves. Marvel on the other hand, guaranteed to need it.
Haha, so I wasn't the only the one who had this conspiracy theory.

I could have sworn just a couple of months ago the fighting game community thread on this site was filled to the brim with people wanting to cut smash out of the fgc.

Wut, I'll argue is the other way around.

link me one recent example? I witnessed shittalking about "melee players" multiple times on gaf this week, never really the other way around
its either something about "move on to the newer game, melee is dead" or "melee players are assholes because of one thing that happened that i heard about"

Wut, I'll argue is the other way around. Smash 4 getting the sunday spot almost melted the forums and reddit because of the salt.

Melee players on Smash 4: "It's boring to watch"

Smash 4 players on Melee: "Just move on from your outdated game already"

One is clearly more hostile than the other.

Those aren't likely actual competitive Smash 4 players.

Again, see above. I haven't really seen it from people who actually play Smash 4, talking from a Smash 4 player perspective.

Damn, Windjammers got a 2k donation. There's still hope?

probably not :(

Earlier in the thread I said that no matter what wins there's no way I'm waking up that early to watch it, I'd make an exception for Windjammers. Seeing Windjammers in an arena would be too surreal to miss.

it was still far too easy to find this kind of post:

That would require the Melee player base to be mature reasonable people. Everything they have shown is that they are not.

Unlike other FGCs Melee players are completely against moving on to the next game. I mean I can get not wanting Brawl, but 4 is super solid and fun. Me an my friends were glad to move on, but it seems only a quarter of Melee players were willing to do the same.

Yeah, well, the "unreleased games and anime garbage" is a whole lot better and less cancerous than Melee anyways.

I have witnessed it the other way around too, Melee players talking shit about Smash 4 players because their game is stupid, casual and boring. Both sides have their hostiles the same way both sides have people who either enjoy both or don't care either way. Honestly, to me, the rupture between both sides is silly and thankfully we are moving on from that.

There is a genuine hostility from Melee players to Smash 4 players when it comes to big tournaments. Smash 4 finals are usually before Melee grand finals and if you see any stream you see a lot of hate from the comment section. They even have a term for Smash 4, Tr4sh. Of course posting something like this on GAF wouldn't be well seen, so it'll be rare to find this level of vitroil here.

When it come to EVO, you can see the reveal thread, there was a loooot of hate because, I quote, "Smash 4 took Melee's righteous place" on Sunday. So far the melee community takes for granted that they are bigger and more important than Smash 4, instead of realizing both communities are, well, mostly just one. Even if there is not a lot of overlap in the people who play the game there is a lot of overlap in the viewers who support both and follow players on both sides.

There is a bit of a persecution complex with Smash 4 fans in that they have taken on the hate brawl used to receive because it was not Melee 2.0. Also its a fact that the Smash 4 fandom is younger than the Melee base, so it makes sense they are going to take said criticism harsher. No one is saying you have to like a game but there is a common theme on Melee players not letting Smash 4 players just enjoy their game, there always seem to be someone who is there to let them now how bad a game it is.

And even if Smash 4 is closer to Melee in some things, its still not Melee, a game so advanced and so refined that the battles, while still excited, have little variation in who is getting into the top places or what characters we are going to see next. Melee has developed so far that its now more about the storylines of the 5 gods and Leffen and who is going to beat who. Not that there is nothing wrong with that.

Point is that its a vicious cycle. Melee players tease Smash 4 players, Smash 4 players tease back. Its childish and dumb and honestly it won't stop, ever, as long as the base is there. If there is a Smash 5 the Smash 4 fanbase will jump to that, meanwhile Melee will still take their game as far as they can until, if ever, dies out.

But lets not pretend one side is harsher or more mean than the other, both have nasty jerks and both have chill people who just wants to enjoy the game or take it to the next level. Vital rule of the internet is to ignore the trolls.

it was still far too easy to find this kind of post:

Are these all coming from tournament players? I've met with many different people since the Brawl days and I've never seen an opinion worse than indifference towards Melee.

I feel as if most, if not all, of this hostility is coming from people who don't actually attend tournaments (and this goes both ways).

honestly? it mostly just seems to appear on the internet and nowhere else

Thats debatable when you have shit like S2J almost beating Armada, and Wizzrobe 3-0 hungrybox. Or like Axe taking multiple sets off mango and leffen etc. Not to mention the top 8 having 6 different characters represented @ Genesis 4 (with falcon just outside that at 9th), which is more than a lot of fighting games.
Upsets are becoming more and more likely with everyone getting so good.

Yeah, the demigods are doing great but still falling short, I was heartbroken by S2J not getting that win over Armada, goes to show go his clutch power that only true champions have.

The point I was trying to make with this is that Melee has had years of development that really makes for great expectation. Smash 4 does have this too, but not in this level. Hell, only franchises that have been as long as Melee have can claim they have storylines as rich and big.

But this has the nasty side effect of Melee players feeling superior to Smash 4 players and this is something I experienced first hand. I organize tournaments and was once invited to TO a big bi-monthly at my city for the Smash 4 side, since they were handling the Melee side. I arrived with my stream equipment and a few Wii U's, since I was promised they were proving HD monitors for them. They had 1 and when I asked they told me that should be enough. Take in mind, this was a good 6 months after Smash 4 released and the playerbase was big enough to make 64+ people tournaments every few weeks. It was obvious to me they looked down on Smash 4 and when I asked if they could get more TV's since that was not going to be enough they threatened to just cancel the Smash 4 side since it was not that important anyway and all those who pre-registered could just move to Melee instead. Since there was a good amount of people there and my name was attached I quickly move people and got my own TV's and asked friends to bring their own and grassrooted the fuck out of that tournament. It ended up with more than 100 people and we somehow salvaged it, despite given a small part of the venue (and been looked at angrily everytime we made hype noises). I was not allowed to stream since "It was messing with the Melee stream fidelity", so I had to record the battles.

What happened next is that everyone was pissed with the organizers but not with me, I promised never to directly organize a tournament for them (But I do help them with setups if asked), and thankfully it got so blown that they publicly apologized and really improved their treatment of the Smash 4 side. It has certainly been getting better, I'll say it got much better after both games where featured in EVO.

Pretty sure I have heard a ton of "Trash 4" non sense on GAF already. The people who hate Smash 4 the most almost always end up being heavy Melee fans, at least from my experience.

This isn't just something you see on GAF, reddit, gamefaqs whatever the hell... this happens at locals and at tournaments. Always a bunch of dudes arguing over Smash 4 vs Melee. Wave dash this, L cancel that.

Next time I am going to rile them up and record the conversation and post it on GAF.

I try to support as many fighting games/communities as I can. Because I want to support the Marvel community doesn't mean I hate any of the others.

I asked in advance, if I can donate towards what I want -- I got the go ahead from the Evo owner (MrWiz) -- and he mentioned only the Evo Board (I'm not part of it) is banned from donating.

If the other communities wanted my help, I would have done something for them as well. No one asked me though.

Yeah baby.

Still a way to go till final day but Marvel community got more drives coming last few days.

Also, Justin's stream doing wonders for donations too.
