EVO 2017 Player's Choice Game - [Ended] UMVC3 wins #SometimesEvilWins

Do the top marvel players still hate on KBR for winning a couple years ago? Is that still something?
No because after he won EVO he beat FChamp in tournament when FChamp was taunting him at every turn and then got second place at EVO again, establishing himself as one of the best. He also won a few other tournaments on the way.

The KBR beef is ancient history now, the current stories of Marvel right now are getting into EVO through this donation drive and RyanLV who is on a streak right now. Everything else is too secondary or minor to matter, generally everyone has come together nicely for this donation drive at least.

More like RyanLV finally killing Marvel, Kappa.

Obviously 64 were small time events that nobody really came to, but its still a game thats been played competitively as long as I can remember.

Man I got so many memes and gif ideas in my head.

I am picturing Yipes giving the Armageddon speech to the minions and warriors.

There was definitely hostility with the last donation drive. Pretty directly correlating with discussions about what game "deserves" it, which obviously leads to shitting on other games.

Entitlement is unsurprisingly a big thing, and it being a donation drive for charity is a minor consideration in motivations which is also unsurprising.

I can't believe windjammers gets put up against pokken and marvel. It's such a great game to play and to watch. Matches can't drag on because it's so fast. I keep the hope of maybe they will have it there anyway still due to its cult status...one can dream

The RyanLV theory craft breakdown has already started.

FChamp says he can beat it with Dormammu by preemptively sniping Morrigan assist with Pillars and then keeping her in the pillar.

Dorm in general is a good anti-Morrigan, which is more relevant than usual w/o an anti-Dorm character like Vergil waiting in the wings.

who beat ChrisG at Frosty?

escalante in pools, not sure if double jeopardy or not. brackets are unfilled but i know he lost to escalante somewhere in pools

i'm curious with how he'd be dealing with chun attempting to punish him while sniping morrigan as well. my assumption is probably dorm missile phoenix vs. that team but the finesse of missiles covering his ass vs. chun going in to punish/pressure him

Well of course there's money in this as EVO is a business. But the player's choice game is decided by donations and they don't even go to EVO but a charity.
EVO's financial stake in picking a game here is figuring out which one will generate more revenue through entry fees. I'm sure they have enough data to determine that without wringing people's wallets for something unrelated.

It's cool that the money is going to paying for John Cena's plane tickets (I'd certainly like for the destination to be a more productive, less feel-good human interest one), but invoking the fact that the money is going to charity as a blind defense to justify squeezing people just doesn't make sense. I can think of ways of monetizing for charity that would get the organizers skewered (gating Melee and SF5 behind large donation requirements; increasing entry fees by some fixed amount that's to be donated); I really don't understand how this is substantively different.

And for Beef, who's always hammering on about how players should be catered to over viewers at tournaments, this is something that directly affects players who are spending their own time and money for the opportunity to play their own game.

The part that vexes me the most is that EVO is always going to come out ahead on this one - not only do they get to bask in the positive press of "gamers raising $______ for charity," they also get to deflect the negativity from games that don't make the cut onto other games. They literally can't lose here.

Incidentally, is there any kind of public statement about how contributions are handled taxation-wise? Does the EVO corporation get to use all of it for a big write-off?

What have the other games tourney numbers looked like since last EVO compared to Marvel?

afaik pokken @ evo2016 had far more entrants and pot size than umvc3 (both had some of the higher entrants, but now theyre both viewers choice?)
