GameSpot: E3 Opens To The Public For The First Time Ever

Makes sense. Just have day 1 for press only, then release the hounds.

This would be the reasonable approach, especially given the apparent last-day malaise that press seem to experience (after most of their appointments are done and they've seen the games they wanted to see). But is this actually happening or is E3 open to the public the entire time?

Omg media is going to be pissed off! It's hard enough getting around and getting in lines to play games...now add 15,000 more people there will make that place unbearable.

Exactly my first thought. They are not going to be happy about this at all.

Imagine wanting to play BotW last year at E3 with 15,000 more people. It was bad already....

Press will get behind closed doors hands on time as always.

I suspect this is E3 hoping to keep exhibitors from pulling out by spinning it as a chance to market to the public as well.

I don't think it'll work. I wouldn't be shocked to hear of more companies pulling out of the show.

Media typically have appointments with publishers, so they don't have to wait in those lines. Getting around is a pain, but it's actually been a lot better over the last few years because there are fewer publishers, fewer games, fewer crazy booths and stage shows creating congestion.

I've always wanted to go to E3 and I could work with the price to get in. However the costs of actually getting there (airfare and hotel) would kill my wallet. Enjoy it, those of y'all who will go now.

Have you seen images of the Anime Expo crowd that take place in that same convention hall? E3 is gonna be unbearable this year.

I might be ok with a press only day, but it doesn't seem to be case. And 15 thousand tickets? So much for being "limited".

If you work anywhere that actually matters you will be getting closed door demos for stuff anyway so I dont think this will effect the media all that much.

E3 has always seemed pretty lax about who they let in considering how many people sneak in or are just there to hang out and get wasted. I feel like Its only really been recently you hear some snotty people complain and try make E3 seem like this buttoned up thing.

Plus by all accounts last years E3 was dire on the show floor. They need the boost unless they want to keep the Convention Center show floor not looking like a ghost town.

Same here. It will be interesting to see the exhibitor list, I wonder if any more companies have dropped out this year due to these changes and if more smaller companies will be in place instead. GameSpot's article mentions a non-existant exhibitor list on https://e3expo.com/ (for 2017 anyway), I suspect more information will be made available on February 13 when/if they update the site.

Would they ever consider making it a traveling show. I'd love to go but I don't think I'd be able to go to Los Angeles. Move it to New York or Chicago once in awhile

As if E3 couldn't get any worse. Imagine the know it all kid who hangs out at Gamestop all day who talks obsessively about Sonic slash fic and quotes Monty python every third sentence.

Now imagine the LA convention hall full of that guy while you're trying to get work done.

That's some nightmare fuel.

E3 was always "open to the public", you just had to know how to fill out some online forms suggesting you were a vendor not yet in the business but considering it and pay $450 a ticket...

Those types already were at E3.
Making a "game journalism" website used to be a very easy way in.

Also, the rules have always been very "optional".
They clearly state "no one under 18 is allowed", but I frequently was annoyed to wait in line to play StarCraft Ghost or Dragon Quest VIII back in the day behind kids who were definitely under 18.

(Probably some game execs kids from Microsoft or EA...)

Wait, wasn't the old E3 open?

That's what I remember.

I feel like the experience got worse with everything being focused around the press reactions to the press conferences rather the crowd impressions of games that are actually playable.

Now it can be less of a marketing tool, more of a WoM generator like PAX again.

This is a good thing. No one really cares what traditional games media thinks anymore anyways.

It's all about personality in front of a camera now. If your means of coverage is writing something about what you saw, then you're basically obsolete.

If anyone is considering this, my $0.02 is that it's worth going once just to have the life experience of having been to E3, but the show itself isn't very enjoyable unless you can make appointments and skip the lines.

Wow this is a nightmare for the press the lines are already insane enough and journal barely get to sleep to cover it all, now it's gonna be even worse...

Makes sense. Just have day 1 for press only, then release the hounds.

LOL. Even for an outlet that has multiple people covering the show, one day is nowhere near enough.

Also, E3 isn't just press. It's people in the industry, it's buyers, it's other devs and tech companies. I'm not against letting the public in, but do it like TGS if you're going to do it. Everyone on the same days is not the solution.

I'm pretty sure the E3 from 1995-2006 was open to the public.

Nope. It was easier to get in in the earlier years, but still not open. At least not most of the years I remember going.

I think this is the natural evolution of E3, games journalism doesn't really matter much and they can get more people talking about future releases by letting masses of bloggers, youtubers and other enthusiasts in.

Could they extend the show so that there are still a couple days for the press and such only and then a couple days for the regular fans? There could be some overlap of course but would be a way to sate both groups appetite to see the showfloor without making it even more of a mad house for the Press.

I think this is a reaction to big and small companies pushing for public attendance over the last few years.

The media is still very important but nowadays, in this new social media reality we all live in, normal people and word of mouth are also equally or even more important for a game to be successful so I see why this is happening.

Also, this can result on smaller games having more exposure than before so I think it's a big win for them as well.

I think it's a good step in the right direction and will probably attract more publishers and developers that are both big and very small than in past years.

I think they are just tired of trying to vet which streamers and YouTubers "deserve" to be there. So they are just going to let everyone in.

It was way too crowded to begin with. This is just going to bump up the line times from like 20 minutes to several hours. Not an amazing decision on the part of ESA.

Hopefully they'll let media skip lines ahead of the public/exhibitors then so they can at least do their jobs instead of having to wait behind these line-clogging masses.

Streamers and YTers could already get in just fine. This is just them trying to compete with events like PAX, which gets huge attendance numbers and lots of money.

As a joe schmo who managed to get in during the "prosumer" year, that is my take as well.

It was fun to experience once in the "life long dream" kind of way, but most of my enjoyment came from hanging out with friends which you can do at any convention.

I enjoy PAX and PSX etc more.

Completely agree.

Going to E3 for a game enthusiast is like going to the Holy Land.
You're going to wait in line a lot, you're going to play some games long before they come out, other games that will never come out (StarCraft Ghost, I miss you), and see a spectacle that is not offered by any other gaming convention in the United States.

E3 makes PAX look small hat.
At least that's what I recall. I haven't been since 2006.

finally the e3 will go back to the glory days of public able to attend.
Fuck that whole elitist BS of having only press and co going,
Heck for that reason alone only doing vids instead of doing the whole show floor was better anyway.

I expect most media outlets to be against this. The sense I get is that it's stressful enough to cover the show effectively WITHOUT hordes of randos crowding up the joint.

Agreed. As part of the media that has been going to E3 since 2005, having the general public crowding the show room floor as I try to run from appointment to appointment just adds to the hectic work environment. It was a nightmare last year with so many "content creators" slowly walking around with cameras in hand. I get the excitement for being there, but standing around blocking pathways was a real concern.

Welp you had a good run E3 have fun doing your job everyone best of luck to you.

Your in my world now have fun.
