GameSpot: E3 Opens To The Public For The First Time Ever

Do NOT make eye contact with homeless people... seriously don't.

The first time LastNac and I went a few years ago we made the mistake of making eye contact with a crazy old homeless man near the Staples center and he followed us for like 5 blocks shouting obscenities at us.

I say hello to the homeless people there all the time. You shouldn't just stare at someone and not even greet them.

Word to the wise, the LA Public Transportation system is a joke. The Subway is pitiful and buses are few and far between. There's a reason why almost everybody in Southern California owns a car...because the PT is such a freaking dumpster-fire.

I say this as a man who's father has been a bus driver for the past 30 years.

Experiencing the job must suck and I'd agree but for budgeting and getting to E3 it's a great option.

What time would one recommend getting there to beat the crowds when they open doors?

Honestly, the best bit of e3 seems to be the press conferences. My experience of other expo's is to avoid all the big titles, play some Indies and have fun.

Someone should make a general "going to E3" thread to compile some advice/do's and do nots in downtown LA

Can't speak about E3, but as far as Downtown LA is concerned I can give a few pointers.

- The traffic is as bad as you've heard and gridlock exists frequently, so if you're planning on doing anything that requires getting on a freeway, plan to leave early.

- Hollywood is kind of a shit-hole. yeah it's fun to go to the Chinese Theater and stuff, but the area those attractions are in and around is very seedy and grungy. It's relatively safe and once you get used to it, you barely see it, but you might be a little shocked the first time.

Do: Eat at an In-n-Out Burger if you get the chance, they're famous for a reason. Pro Tip: Order your fries Animal Style.

Do: Eat some Mexican food while you're in LA. Southern California has some of the best Mexican food in the country...some would say better than you can find in Mexico.

Avoid the highways near DTLA as much as possible, especially as this is taking place mostly during the middle of the week. Take side streets if you are driving down there.

I can't decide if I wanna do this. On one hand, the atmosphere, excitement and festivities of E3 in person sounds really fun. Just being in that environment would be a neat experience, not to mention the swag.

But then again, $150 to line up and play demos is pretty steep.

Nice. It seems industry registration was glitched out earlier, but now everything seems to be fixed. Got my registration all taken care of.

You guys had better bring a Switch for those lines.

I wonder if E3 is going to be "different" with public attendance. Meaning, I wonder if this year they (developers) are going to be more flashy or have more items to give out knowing that the general public will actually be in attendance.

They started really scaling back on items being given since it was supposed to be 'industry' only and the early E3's (around 2000 - 2006) were pretty crazy especially with the amount of swag that was given out.

I just wonder if E3 will be 'different'.

Well because no one else has done it I will attempt to throw together a "going to E3 thread" based on some of the advice in this thread.

Good idea.

Another tip is, bring along your DS fully charged with that streetpass access. I got a ton of people from many parts of the world in one day.

I went to E3 around 20 yearso ago, not sure this is the first time it's been open to the public. All I remember though is the Eidos booth babes were super hot and the Lara Croft model was stunning.

Anybody end up getting two separate tickets with the same card? One of my charges disappeared and the other is still in pending despite having the money for both in my debit card. Should I be worried?

I got my badge yesterday. No, not this stupid one that costs hundreds of dollars, but rather the pass that I'm entitled to as a LEGITIMATE MEMBER OF THE INDUSTRY.

Not sure how I feel about this. On the one hand, it's going to make things even more cramped and smelly than it already is, but on the other hand, it seems like it's still priced too far out of the mass public's reach.

Yeah, it must be kind of embarrassing that tickets haven't sold out yet. PAX typically sells out within hours. Asking $250 was simply a bridge too far.

The value of my ticket is $900. Putting it into perspective, even $250 is dirt, dirt cheap for E3 access. The only thing is.. lines are already hilariously long so this year is going to be much worse. Imagine standing in like for 4-5 hours to play 1 game, this is a thing right now. Add more people, ya. I'll just get drunk at Hooters across the street and stumble in later for some short line indy stuff. For anyone going for the first time, check your expectations and if you want to play anything remotely popular expect long, long lines. Otherwise just cruise the halls and check stuff out here and there.

Don't go on Tuesday either, short day. Halls open at 12pm to 5pm, instead on Wednesday and Thursday they are 10am-5pm. If you want to stretch the value of your ticket that is.

You got the Business Pass I assume. Quite good value for what you get, especially the VIP entrance to exhibit halls.

$250, hell even $900 isn't necessarily that bad if you're an up and coming media outlet trying to get exposure. But paying that amount just to play a couple of demos for a few minutes after several hours of waiting? Fuck. That.

If the price was $250 I wouldn't have purchased a ticket, I can say that. That and the fact that it's local to me makes a huge difference.

If I was a bit more freewheeling with my funds then I would definitely prefer going to PAX Prime. They have a lot more fun, easily accessible stuff to do.

My friend and I agreed to not go unless we got early bird tickets.

Needless to say, I got early bird but he didn't, so he ended up buying his full price

He really wanted to go with me, but if we both would have missed early bird than we definitely wouldn't be going. $250 is so much money

It wouldn't surprise me if there are people at the ESA who think that, however the idea that not selling out as quickly as the ticketing infrastructure can process orders = failure is a ridiculous one.

They need to be more concerned about delivering on the experience for the people who buy tickets not how many tickets they have sold.

So e3 is no longer real life's answer to cArtman's amusement park? Sounds like a no brainer. Glad they finally came around
