Splatoon still worth buying?

I've heard great things about this game, but now that it's almost 2 years old and the Wii U is no longer being manufactured, is it worth picking up this game? Any wager on how long Wii U online service will still be active?

It's a pretty great game.

Though the Splatfests are over and the Wii U's future past this year is uncertain, it is solid. I really enjoyed the bit of single-player that they had.

Plus if you play to get Splatoon 2, the first game will ease you in just right.

who knows about Wii U's online services but the Splatoon community is still very active on there and it's a great game

it's hard to say because I think they're going to pull the rug out in regards to Wii U this year

Yes, especially if you can get it for cheaper. I don't expect the online to die within the year so I don't think that's an issue.

I thought about buying it but then I became worried that Nintendo could turn off the online too quickly. Doesn't seem worth it to spend full price $60 and take that risk.

It still has an active community but I wouldn't recommend it unless you can find it used or cheap. Full retail now feels like a bit of a rip off given its age (e: and inevitable shutdown of online services sooner rather than later), the fact that it will no longer be supported in terms of new content, and the Splatfests ended mid-last year.

Still worth having though.

Absolutely; my favorite game of the Wii U generation. One of the only online-focused games I've ever been able to stick with for more than a couple weeks.

Splatfests are a drop in the bucket as far as the time my wife has spent with this game, and even with no new updates there are still tons of weapons and other gear types to chew through.

The community is also really, really fantastic. A lot of unique qualities have grown out of the way the game works, especially with the lack of voice chat. I'm actually a bit anxious about whether things will be the same once we transfer over to a paid service with voice.

I'm still playing it and online userbase is still very much active. The sequel might take a while so hop in while the game's still fresh.

I think it will stay active after Splatoon 2, and it will always be free online. So until Nintendo shuts down the servers, which the earliest could be at the end of the year 2017 or after Splatoon 2... It's going to be active until doomsday.

Besides that, the single player campaign is worth your time. It's really really good, just short.

Well congratulations! You got yourself caught!
I felt it was a solid pickup for the campaign alone, which wasn't very long or challenging to 100%, but quite entertaining. Online is pretty enjoyable and though I barely touched it, I did dabble into a round or two a few months ago and it was still quite active.

I bought it last week, there's still plenty of players online, some of them beginners like me. Not realIy explored single player yet.
I would say it's still worth getting if you haven't already.

The single player game felt like the true successor to Mario Galaxy IMO. Fantastic.

Online is still huge, full of players at every level still. I'm actually surprised to still see new players (L10, C- etc) all the time still.

Splatoon has an amazing single-player campaign. It's worth it for that alone.

Agreed! And the online community should be plenty fun to tide you over till Splatoon 2. If you're primarily interested in just a briefer experience with it, mainly doing the SP, and are in the US, you could do it through a GameFly free trial which is what I did.

it's a great great game, but i kinda stopped once the splatfests finished. i guess if you're getting a switch wait. if not get it. player base still seems pretty big.

god i love splatfests. don't take them away so fast next time nintendo.

I just bought it a few days ago. Always wanted to play it but never got around to doing so.

I am not 100% sold on the Switch but maybe if I love Splatoon that that would change my opinion.

If your gonna buy a Switch I would say just wait for it to come out later this year. Unless its abysmal everyone will probably jump to 2. Also its unknown when Nintendo will cut the servers. Splatoon is a VERY bare bones off-line single and multiplayer experience.

I just played quite a bit this past week, wait times were extremely short, played with mostly Japanese players. I think many people will be dipping back in before splatoon 2 drops and it will probably be quite active for some time after that too. Single player was great so I vote YES.

A very important question for me is if the entire SP is going to be in Splatoon 2. I ask because of a tweet saying that Hero Mode and all weapons from Splatoon 1 would be returning to Splatoon 2. Now, I'm not sure if they just mean the mode is returning and will be a new SP experience, or if they will be including the entire SP experience from the first game as well as new SP content?

This is important to me because I still have an unopened copy of Splatoon 1, and if all of its content is going to be in Splatoon 2, then I'll just trade it in.

Some of the old maps will carry over to Splatoon 2, but Splatoon 2 is more-or-less its own game (Ex: They're starting from zero with the weapons). I'd also wager that Splatoon 2 will have its own campaign & not have Splatoon 1's campaign carried over since Splatoon 2 takes place 2 years after the original game.

It's a sequel, an entirely new game. Nothing besides some old maps and weapons will be returning.

I still play this and I have no problem joining games.

A lot of Japanese players, though. Dunno what the US scene is like.

Long story short, one of the greatest Nintendo games of all time. Definitely get it on the cheap

Don't worry about online services shutting down, Wii and DS got like around 8 years or so before they shut down. Still a long ways to go

And the Wii & DS were only shut down because of the fact that they used GameSpy for matchmaking.

Good point. Switch versions or not, its pretty much a sure thing that Wii U games like Splatoon and Pokken Tournament will maintain solid communities for years to come.

This Twitter post is why I ask, it was unclear if they meant just the SP mode or specifically the content from the SP mode was coming back. I was pretty sure it was the latter, but if not, then I could have easily just traded in the original.

When I get to play it the vast majority of players are asians, which sucks for ping (take note I'm in Brazil). If you can get it for cheap I think maybe it's worth it if you're thirsty for something new. If you're already getting the switch and have something to play till Splatoon 2 I'd personally wait for it.

I played 2 at a switch event the other week. It was my first splatoon experience. I loved it so much i decided i couldnt wait and bought a copy of 1 on the way home, and i don't normally like online shooters (if you can even call this one). I had no problems finding matches or being a contributor right out of the gate. My only complaint is that i seem to get at least one "connection lost" error each play session.
