Nintendo announces Zelda: Breath of the Wild season pass, $20, contents detailed

Which part of the Zelda season pass are you most excited for?

Part of my disappointment is that I feel Zelda has a certain artistic integrity that other games lack, and dlc ruins that. I consider it more than a game, it's an event. It's like if your favorite band or author came out with a new album or book, and then decides to sell you a new song or chapter 6 months later. It cheapens the artistic integrity of the original. Games like Mario Kart I don't care, but Zelda to me is a self contained work of art.

but we don't know that though? and an additional story is pretty beefy content imo. Considering if it's voiced like the rest of the game and lasts longer than 1 hour, I think that's really fair.

It might be worth it, but we barely know anything about the game's story to begin with since it's not out yet and announcing extra story to a story we don't know if we like yet is kind of weird to me especially when you're attaching it to a season pass, and I don't think they even announced how much the story would be without the season pass or how long the extra story content is meant to be.

If it's worth it (and I hope it is) then Nintendo has at the very least done an awful job at messaging with this.

I'm spending like $1k on BotW games and other pre-order bonus shit, so I can't really complain here...

"New Hard Mode" should have been free and included from the beginning though.

I can cope with the second part but not the other bits. I'll probably hold fire till I know what exactly I'm getting, even if I pay more overall.
I bet you won't, they usually give you the option to buy separately but the pass option remains, at least that's what happend in Mario Kart 8 and Hyrule Warriors

The funniest thing about this is not just the misunderstanding that all DLC must equal paid content, it's the implication that Double Dash even has 200CC to unlock just by playing in the first place.

It went up to 150cc. And you start at 50cc.

Sure, but they also did it for Mario golf world tour, which was gutted and useless without the DLC.

The dlc for smash, fire emblem, Hyrule warriors... All way overpriced for what it was. I either felt ripped off after buying it or like I was missing out by not having it. I was really hoping Zelda would be an exception here. Mario kart is the one time they got it right, imo. Announced well after launch and with a good value proposition.

The value proposition here looks awful.
As mentioned before, the price for Smash 4's DLC (& by extension, pretty much any major modern fighting game) was perfectly fair considering how much work goes into making a fighting game character in the first place. The pricing wasn't a steal like MK8's, but it was fair compared to other fighting games and when you factor in the time & effort necessary for new fighting game characters.

No bald cap? Lies!
Depending on who is playable in Pack #2 and just how big the new dungeon and story is this could be decently priced. Most major content expansions are $15 and some being up to $20 or more. If the new stuff is really substantial the other content is basically bonus content to me. Still sucky to charge for a hard mode.

But if the new content isn't that meaty and really only $10 worth of content then yeah this is overpriced and shitty.

I'll play the game on WiiU at launch and get a Switch by the end of 2017...
That means I need to double dip on the game and the expansion pass now?! oh boy

I think that's a fair point. Although one must admit that times have changed and seeing how big the world is Nintendo has created for BoTW, it makes sense for them to make more money off of it. And if the additional content is worth the money they are asking, it should be alright.

But it definitely is the penultimate statement that they've changed their ways. Same with paying for online on Switch. Which was to be expected but still. I can see some people being disappointed.

...hate me...
It's additional content. I'm in like flynn!

I'll buy it when/if I beat the game once and feel like I'm not done with it and want more.

Didn't happen for MK8 or Smash

Probably not going to happen to Zelda

I completely disagree. MK8, New Super Luigi U, and Hyrule Warriors DLC packages were outstanding and honestly the industry should view those as example DLC packages.

SSB was pretty standard.

FE:A and Fates were largely awful. NSMB2 was mediocre.

Overall, they are pretty 50/50 when it comes to DLC and I'll give them the benefit of a doubt. But I won't be spending a single penny till I know what it consists of in detail.

I imagine the value will be there as was the case Mario Kart 8 DLC, but come on Nintendo drop this announcement a few months after the game's release, not before the game is even out.

I see gaf has forgotten that Nintendo creates dlc after the game is finished, not during development. Nintendo doesn't take parts of the game and sells it later. They would have only started development on the dlc in the last few weeks.

I've really enjoyed all of the Nintendo DLC I've bought, especially the stuff from the internal teams like MK8's. I'm super in for this.

Albums get re-released with extra songs all the time. Besides, they say it's a new original story, so your point seems moot. The only issue I see from what we know is a difficulty level being locked behind a paywall.

Not sure how I feel about this. I always counted on Nintendo not doing stuff like this for their games, Mario Kart didn't bother me because as a racer I view DLC differently.

So it'll have like, amiibos adding content and the Season Pass adding content?

I mean I'm not too bothered about it since I thought the way they handled DLC in Smash 4 was fine, I admit however I will probably not wound up buying the extra content.

Here's hoping for a GotY edition later on on the Switch.

So no way to buy only the 2nd part of the DLC?
DLC 2 is the only one worth even remotely considering, then.
DLC Pack 2 is the real meal, the rest is just the breadsticks so you aren't left with nothing until it's ready.
NEW ORIGINAL STORY??????

Hows that possible with DLC?
Don't understand the question. How wouldn't it be?
Nintendo has never released a complete edition of a game within the same generation before.
They released NSMBU + New Super Luigi U on one disc. There's also several times they took "download-only" games and then released expanded versions as physical, but that's a bit different.

Fire Emblem DLC has one of the worst values I've ever seen.

I understand why they're doing it, but...yeah. I'm wondering if it's cross-buy as well. I doubt it is.

The Switch shirt is terrible. Just terrible.

That second pack launching so much later gives me hope it will be substantial. I'm not really interested in the first piece from the sound of it. Though I imagine they will be like 15 bucks a pice making the pass worth it

Maybe its launching so much later to give them time to finish it, which I can understand, after all, we've only been waiting 5years+ for this game.

Exactly what I feel too. It's hard to see that happen.
So I guess it really when we see it more as art, I said the same thing.

New dungeon and new story gets me interested but that price tag though.....

Well it's during the holiday so I should have more money to spend on games considering all the heavy hitters are in spring and summer 2017

But I just paid 80 bucks to get a copy shipped day 1
I'm spending 100 dollars on Zelda I guess.

I'm paying 52€ thanks to the Amazon France price. So an additional 20€ makes this 70€. I think that's how much I paid for FF XV on Day One and it was worth it. I'm sure this will be worth it as well.

Wait what do the amiibo's add dlc wise? Wouldn't all that be in the season pass so you don't have to buy amiibo's?

You are absolutely joking.

The base game had around 100 holes, and the DLC added 100 more (which were not totally original content either, they were remakes from the 64 game). Starting from 100 is not "gutted and useless."

IF it goes on sale for $5 and I've beaten the game (or close to it), I'll probably pick it up. I don't mind DLC but I tend to not spend too much on it. Mass Effect 2 and 3 on PC being the horrendous exception.

I wonder if that Zelda art is a clue that she'll be the playable character in the new DLC story?

Or would they not, because they'll probably expect you to play the DLC as your existing Link character like how most games do DLC campaign content? I could see it either way.

I honestly don't plan on playing it more than once. It is a hard sale to get me to go back to a game I already beat when there are soooo many games coming out. Even as much as I love Final Fantasy, I already regret prepaying for DLC. I am not that big of a Zelda fan as it is anyway.

Sweet. If it's anything like the downloadable content we got for Mario Kart or Smash than the price will be worth it.
