Few things.

Mel Brooks made a lot of inappropriate jokes, but he was also fairly progressive too. Context, quality, and many other things matter. While I haven't seen it, CK is someone who strikes me as being similar in the sense that he isn't going to say something like that for pure shock value, but rather it will have a point.

PDP basically is a 14 year old kid doing shit for kicks and hoping it sticks. Another youtube celebrate that got big by acting annoying and screaming, rather than having well rehearsed material and going through the loops.

That's not to say they don't fuck up either, Chapelle is another that did his homophobic Transgender act and it came under fire and rightfully so. We still had a defense force rush to his aid when it's well documented his material has always been extremely homophobic and saying "context" matter. When really, it's just something that is outdated. The issues are typically more complex than saying, "Well he said it, so why can't I"
 
Yeah, in some of his videos, context does matter.

However, if he was really honestly shocked and felt any kind of remorse about the "Death to all Jews" Fiver sign, he wouldn't have posted it to YouTube.

But he did.
 
Regardless of context, is it really a message you want to be normalising for millions of kids? I think it'd be pretty shitty if you were a Jewish kid watching his videos.
 
I can't believe I'm saying this but I miss the days when gaming side of YouTube was a bunch of grown-ass men fighting console wars, it was embarrassing but man, the current shit show is unbearable.

Because of the very simple distinction that he was seeing what terrible thing someone would be willing to do for $5. The point is that it's terrible and people are willing to do it for little money. That's it.

Do you literally see no context in which this scenario playing out couldn't be construed as the element within a larger actual point? Do you think the article writer is racist because they're writing an article about a person paying someone $5 to display a sign saying "Death to All Jews"?

The obvious question becomes why did he chose that phrase? There are any number of stupid or horrible things he could have asked them to write, why was it that one, where did it come from?

There's absolutely nothing wrong with feeling that the hate this act brought into the world far outweigh any "comedic" value he may have thought it would have. It was a dumb, unfunny joke, and I understand Disney and YouTube wanting to distance themselves from it.

If the joke had actually been deep, or thoughtful, or even actually funny he would be getting more slack for this as other comedians have.

Louis CK knows that he can't go on Ellen and make anti-semetic jokes. The sponsors would pull out. Yet he can go pretty raw in an HBO special or an 18+ club setting. Different audience.

WSJ and Forbes went too far about it.

WSJ posted a video cutting all context and everything and just showing the parts of "nazi" of a PDP video without any other explanation than "HE'S ANTI SEMITIST LOOK". When in reality it was part of a "I'm not racist video" where he makes fun of the media for calling him a Facist.

Forbes just did shit explaining when the real context tells another story. There's a post that shows Forbes story and how they half-assed it to get clicks without explaining why Pewds did that or the context.

I understand what his intentions were. I don't think he is a terrible, irredeemable person. Just highly irresponsible.
 
Fact of the matter is the social commentary he was doing sucks. He also could have changed what was said and it would still suck, but since the commentary sucked so bad, it just left the anti-semitic language.

Doing the whole thing that his point was to show how crazy the world is, there are better ways to show that. He picked the most laziest, half-assed, pathetic, sad attempt at humor he possibly could.

When you don't have the same taste in humor it always looks like a different story. It happens, but it doesn't mean that the person is an instant racist or xenophobic asshole. Yeah, he might be stupid in your standards but with research people could have find out that those were "shit jokes that weren't funny" and leave it at that, maybe a couple "they're dumb" and move on.

I agree that him using the phrase Death to All Jews in and of itself doesn't mean he's promoting anti-semitism*, but the comparison is apt. They're both about trying to profit off the desperation and misery of those less fortunate as they debase themselves. At the very least he's an idiot for not realising how the premise of the video was despicable from the beginning.

*maybe he is indirectly considering his young, uncritical audience
 
Good. I thought he was at least a decent guy before and deserved his success but what he did was pretty messed up. Deserves to have his career go down the drain now.

Turns out Disney and Youtube simply don't share the 'same taste in humor' that thinks having two people hold up a sign saying "Death to all Jews - subscribe to Keemstar" is in any way particularly funny.

I haven't really called him a racist or xenophobe or nazi in either thread though. I have stated how half-assing this kind of stuff is bad and can lead to normalization because of the lack of thought put forth, and how badly it reflects on the individual who makes bad jokes.

EDIT: However, I do not like anti-semitism jokes and don't ever support them.

That they don't share it it's okay, Disney can't get the crowd they want with current PDP so what they made was fine.

Youtube surprised me more since PDP was the golden goose and Scare PDP 2 was ready to be launched, they coulda just put all episode and not renew the show for season 3. And make the money.

The media just blew up everything out of proportion because they want the juicy click and the context for them is boring and won't bring any visit to their pages, better spice it.

He is not a random shit poster on the internet. Millions of kids watch him. His primary audience by in large are kids and young teens, which I'm sure Pewdie is highly aware of since it's his business which he has proven to be excellent in running otherwise. It's why it's hard for me to shrug it off as "just a poorly made joke".

But do I hope he learns from this and from here on forward is FAR more thoughtful about what he's presenting.
 
Off the bat, I've never liked PewDiePie's humor. Did he cross the line? I lean toward yes but that h3h3 video is very convincing to buy into the "take a look at the context" defense. Sure, things may not be as they are being portrayed, but these conglomerates have certain morals they don't want to touch even with a ten foot pole.

All in all, you can't force Disney and YouTube to not make decisions based on their own self interest. If they feel the content crosses a certain territory they don't want to venture in then they don't have to continue the partnership. I mean unless there is an iron clad contract that says PDP NEEDS to be paid for the next 10 years by making videos with them, then they really don't have to work with him at all.

A channel where he made rape jokes, dark humor, played Happy Wheels, RE7, watched BOKU NO fucking PICO in youtube and reacted to it with sound, and is usually in cameos with some of the most disgusting people in the internet. That was never a children's channel.

We are in an era where children are looking to a PC screen because mom and dad leave to work and never have time to talk to them or teach them what's good, what's bad, what the kid should watch. Yes, pewds can be an influence to children because parenting doesn't work and parents can't control what they watch like in the 90s or the first half of the 00s. But it's not his work.

But I'm not gonna talk too much about parenting because someone will answer with "but he influences children and you should accept that and pewdiepie has to accept that and keep doing PG content for them!", and they will use anything to treat this as fallacy so I don't care.

He will not change that much, if anything he will be more subtle and smarter by the time he drops the jokes. Maybe add a disclaimer that the video is not PG. And then it's parents responsibility.

Chris Rock had that famous routine that was about the different subsets of behaviours of folks in the black community. Many found it funny, it became quite popular... but you know what happened... racist people used it and quoted it and justified their racism by invoking it.

So what did Chris Rock do?

He directly interacts with his audience does he not? He knows who they are. He's not creating his content in a vacuum where this is not considered.

I think it's even more a problem when you have context. Someone hitting always the same nail (nazi stuff, swatiska in game) and finally come up with that phrase... It looks like an obsession at this point and not some "worst phrase I could ever think of".
