So erm, living in Estonia, my family was hunted by both the commies and nazies. Some were recruited to the German army some were sent to Siberia.
As far as war experience goes, my grandparents told me Germans were actually very nice, since they always left their guns at the gate when coming to talk to people and traded food/supplies for chocolate or other stuff that had. Where as commies just walked in, were agressive and offensive and took what they wanted. At least this was the experience in the little village they lived in (please note I AM not making any generalizations on the people or nations or trying to say anything about anybody outside of that context)
So in theory, as one of the victims of the nazi/commy regime I should be extra sensitive to these subjects or at least have the right to be. Nontheless I find the sensitivity around the matter and the awkwardness around the whole topic totally ridiculous and feel that the sooner we get to the point where we can make nazi jokes the better.
I mean christian church was a violent maffia that ran amok all over Europe and beyond in the name of god burning and torturing people left and right a few hundred years ago. US has turned the native Americans into a Zoo kind of attraction (no offence intended here, please forgive me if offended).
Germany was paid soooo much in reparations during the post war period and they are being the champs of the current migration crises in EU... I see no reason why the events that happened so long ago should be no more than a lesson learned by now and all debts repaid/sensitivity to matter resolved. Please make no mistake here, I am not by any means advocating for the nazi regime here, just saying perhaps its time develop a sense of humor and focus on things that are a problem now...
