PS4 System Software Update 4.50 Features Detailed

Any idea what kind of fixes? For me, the previous release seemed as stable as any public release. I've been dead impressed.
Some players had issues with VR during beta 2, and I had issues with Wifi/Ethernet when playing online games. There are probably other things people ran into that they are trying to address.

One issue I noticed (not sure if it'll be fixed by Beta 3 or is an intentional decision) is that most of the options for media apps such as Netflix when using the Options button are gone.

I only have 'Delete' now, whereas previously there used to be Check for Update, Update History and so on.

No changelog at all?

We've updated the PS4™ System Software Beta to make your Beta Trial experience even better.
Then how are we supposed to test the new version if the details are a secret?

*sigh* in this age public software tests don't rely on feedback at all, that's just an added bonus. The real data is collected automatically by the system...

Did they increase performance of the OS when navigating? There was a thread for it started by a kotaku article. It's slow since they did what ever the last update was, not as fast going through your menu and apps like before.

Does 4.5 fix any of that?

I think it's not related to beta, because I noticed the same thing about a two weeks ago, before beta firmware – http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=229616363&postcount=214

Usually just doing a database rebuild will fix that. So far the issues I saw prior to the beta are gone, but installing new FW automatically rebuilds the database.

The only tiles that seemed to be affected were live tiles, so the media section was, unfortunately, affected since it sends ads for streaming services.

I have a PS4 with 40o gigs (2TB drive) of free space. No big deal, legacy machine. But I have a PRO since launch and the fucking thing only had 500 gigs (2TB) free.

External is so welcomed. Now I can dump crap like Star Wars Battlefront, Doom and Uncharted 4 onto a drive and never think about them again.

I don't understand the purpose of saving games to external HDD ? Can you play them right off there? I just delete and download from library if I go back to old games which is about never... But I'm still confused

some people have bandwidth caps. and yeah you can play them off the external HD. a lot more crucial if you favor digital.

A few different reasons (and yes, you can play them off there):
  • It's extra storage, avoiding delete/redownload cycle (and PSN download speeds are highly unreliable);
  • You can use cheaper storage (not limited to 2.5" 9.5mm drives);
  • You can customise your storage setup (e.g. small SSD internal and big slow external, or vice versa).

I'm currently loading my most-played games to a small external SSD for way faster load times, while keeping everything else on a big SSHD internal. The SSD is too small to be a sole drive option, so having the external option means I can have enough storage space internally while simultaneously enjoying SSD speeds off the external.

Some people like to have their whole library available locally, along with all their patches, just in case in the future the service ceases or some other issue. Preserving.

Want to get an external drive for the PS4 once the update becomes available..Seagate drives are just too noisy I have one for my XBOX ONE and when it turns on in the middle of the night for updates it sounds like a UFO so want to try something different just not sure..the 4TB desktop one for 109 minus 25 or the USB powered one(Will wait til Sunday to see what offers are available for it)

I've a 3TB WD Elements, it's a 3.5" HDD and the case is way bigger than the autopowered drive, but it's nearly silent, very good looking and a lot faster than every other cheap 2.5" HDD, and it'll autopower automaticaly when the USB are ON so you don't even need to use the power button.

I like this one more, but both needed to be able to totally clear the notifications entirely. Mixing them and not letting me clear it is just, ugh.

The only thing I liked about the new one is when you have an active download and you click on it, it brings you directly to the download list otherwise having to click the Options button to access that is a horrible idea

Great update Sony.

If you could work on a future patch, that sort of control the fan curve/noise that the Pro model makes, playing graphic intese games such as UC4 i and many others would be very happy!.

I thought we couldn't seamlessly play games on internal and external drives. I thought we had to switch from internal to external or vise versa in the system settings. Glad I was wrong.

Should I use my Samsung 850 Evo internally or externally? Right now I have a 2tb firecuda drive in my Pro.

I think there should be no difference. PS4's OS is throttling everything, so SSD will help with faster seek times and a bit faster bandwith. Shame the full capability can't be reached.
