Nintendo Switch UI video from some guy [named hiphoptherobot]

It:

1: Only shows playtime for individual days and how many days you played each month. Not total playtime for a month, year, or overall.

2: Locked to a mobile app when I don't have a mobile device. Should be built in.

3: Would have to parental lock my system just to use it. I mean really?

That "feature" will never be an Activity Log.

You don't know any of this. The video doesn't show if there's more detailed information when you click on specific games. You don't know if the day one update adds similar functionality to the system itself. You don't know whether simply viewing playtime as an activity log requires any sort of locking or passwords.

Slow your roll.

The beautiful thing is, for people like you, you can do just that. Disable them.

For people that actually enjoy them Nintendo is giving no option currently. At least not on a system wide trackable and compare with friends level

I'm ambivalent to them personally. Just my impression but I think Nintendo is philosophically opposed to anything that would dictate design decisions. I'm not sure that's the right decision though.

Seeing that the Mission Rewards of MyNintendo provide actual uses for the points (discounts, themes, etc.), I actually prefer them.

I agree, but it might be a problem for third party games. Hopefully this is something they can implement system wide.

That's all this screenshot shows, but the fact that it is part of the system (as shown by this screenshot) should tell you that it's very possible that it's there.

Also I think someone earlier in this thread pointed out that the dev docs have said that the parental controls can be accessed on the system or via the app.

"Change Grip/Order" seems to suggest an easy way to swap out which Joycon will be attached to the Switch/used as the main 2 controllers. Not just that, it could also make things easier if Nintendo does have alternate Joycon attachments beyond just the color differences because you can just swap out one pair for another. At least, that's my speculation for why they have that option.

Where did you get 4 hours for auto sleep?

Here:

Parental Controls: "Parental Controls can be used to restrict features of this console. Configure these on the console or using your smart device."

Looks like they can be managed without the Bowser app, which gives me some hope that play-time logging is in fact in (the video didn't guide us into Parental Controls settings).

Sleep Mode: "Suspend Auto-Sleep While Playing Media Content: Prevents auto-sleep from activating while media content is playing. If this option is disabled, the console will still go to sleep after four hours of media playback."

Now that's interesting, given that we've been told we're not receiving a Netflix app at launch. The only media content we know to expect at this point are eShop preview videos and the future video-recording feature in the Capture button, neither of which are likely to push the four-hour limit. So it looks like the sleep-mode features in the OS have been built in advance of future Netflix or Twitch integration.

Everything about this device looks as slick as fuck. All of the technology they've packed into the joycons, the quality of the screen, the snapiness of the UI, the ease of switching between TV and handheld modes....Yeah, this thing looks like it will be worth every penny of the two hundred and seventy nine English pounds and ninety-nine English pence that I've spent on it.
Next best thing since iPhone said someone from IGN. I want to hold it, test everything.

People trying to downplay achievements are as annoying as people who cancel pre-orders because of the achievements lacking.

Achievements are a great way of keeping people engaged in a game. If done right they are fan.
Making a great game is a great way to keep people engaged in a system. All achievements do are create a psychological addiction and way to keep you locked in and devoted to an ecosystem.

And this is coming from someone who was resistant to online multiplayer for a lot of games because they had no trophies. I'm so glad I'm over that nonsense.

Having great achievements is part of making a great game. A game itself can be a psychological addiction. If you are afraid of that you should never play a fun or engaging game ever again.

when I saw him enter "gaf" as the username

These excuses don't work in 2017. Even iPhones have achievements ffs

I don't think we can read too much in what features are missing from the UI until after the day 1 update. There is a good chance some of that (like the activity log) could show up after the day 1 update.

Really? Surely the Wii U OS has fans on here other than me?

It's the PS4 OS that I hate. So fucking boring, and was without folders for way, way too long. Ever since folders were implemented I've come around on it - that increased my usage of the PS4 by about 300%.

Oh fuck, actually, I've just been assuming the Switch has folders. What if it doesn't, like the PS4 didn't? Fucking potential disaster!

You worry too much.

Achievements can help. Can't say I miss them in Nintendo games myself but many people like them so Nintendo might as well add them. It can't be that hard I'd imagine.

The achievements should be IN the game. The thing I've noticed about the other console makers is that those trophies mean nothing in the actual game. They don't unlock secret worlds, or do anything that video games have been doing for a very long time.

Nintendo games almost universally have collectibles, and it's not limited to them.

Some game developers do align the trophies with in game rewards, so that's cool.

I will never get the achievement fever.

First thing I disabled on my PS4.

It's just a virtual pat in the back.

whats even worse is that there are ppl who will refuse to play a game if it doesn't have em or will buy a game just because of the easy trophies even if the game is complete shit

Well of the available info all I can do is assume those things.

But I'll stop posting since my ideal of an Activity Log is not what has been shown. Of it does have a real Activity Log then that'll be fantastic but as of now it doesn't and my hype has been deflated quite a bit since I love stats and had those for two systems straight. (tho Wiiu one was lacking.)

Dark mode looks awesome. Can't wait!

Also, a little off topic, but some of these people on the YouTube comments section always hate on gaf. What gives?

Are they giving HipHopTheRobot credit? I saw Nintendo Enthusiast upload the video to Youtube but added HipHop as the video source.
Yeah, I noticed a few people upload it themselves and take credit for it. Oh well. People are jerks but no biggie. I wasn't trying to monetize that video anyway.

I appreciated the Wii U's operating system for its simplicity and lack of ads, especially once we got three or four updates in and Nintendo fixed the speed issues.
