what jrpg are you playing right now ?

Finally got all of the endings in Exist Archive, got about 60% of all trophies which seems to be pretty good. I can honestly say I'm done with that game now.

I also started playing both Lagrange Point and Esper Dream 2.

Esper Dream 2 is really fun, albeit a bit short. I am about to start with the final world. It's an RPG with large, colorful sprites and great music. Encounters are denoted as a pair of footprints, and when you touch a footprint you go to a battle arena where fights play out in an action RPG/overhead run n' gun fashion. You shoot enemies with arrows, bazookas, flamethrowers... you can get mines as a weapon too. The game has a varied amount of worlds with different NPCs in each of the worlds. There is a port town where you travel underwater to different shipwrecks, a train that travels through time, the inside of a furnace where all the NPCs are screws or screwdrivers (your partner is named "Screwy" for this chapter), and a mountain where you get a character that looks like Starfy. There's a full translation from AGTP and I definitely recommend it to fans of action RPGs.

Lagrange Point has an incredible soundtrack, being the only NES game to use the VRC7 chip for FM-synthesis. The game gives me all those same 80's anime vibes that Phantasy Star 2 does, but it's a little skimpy on plot and NPC dialogue. Seems to be a 'go here, get item, move on'... The FFs and DQs on the NES were certainly much more developed. Dungeons are rather small, with narrow paths, and a too-steep encounter rate. But I'm still having lots of fun due to A E S T H E T I C S and the soundtrack. Made it to the first boss battle where I proceeded to get my ass kicked. There needs to be more sci-fi RPGs.

Still playing Xenoblade Wii, from when I started back in summer 2013. Pretty far along now, just entering Agniratha.

Still playing Xenoblade X, doing the Chapter 10 boss fight, and spending time exploring on mech with flight, which is a blast.

Started playing Ys Origin. Love the music, started the game and got to 4th floor. Initially only issue was sound used to crackle and skip a little (even after enabling the sound buffer option), but now sound won't play at all, and every few seconds the games framerate will drop to 1 and it'll freeeze for about a second. Literally unplayable.

Also started Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky. Just finished the initial bracer guild quest, where you grab the chest from the severs for Scherazard.

I started playing Arc Rise Fantasia for the first time, but I think I'll hold off on continuing that game until I make some progress in the other ones.

Mostly I stay busy and play Rocket League or Project M when I have a little while to play games, which means I'm not really making much progress on these RPGs...

I still need to play Baten Kaitos and Origins, Tales of Symphonia, and Skies of Arcadia, which I have on my Wii (which is my Gamecube). Also I have Fire Emblem Path of Radiance and Radiant Dawn... never got around to those, and I'm looking into acquiring a 3DS so I can play Awakening, Fates, and the new one... as well as a number of other RPGs that are on the 3DS too.... I also acquired (last summer) and have yet to play FF Tactics, Xenogears, and FF7 on PSX, suffice to say my RPG backlog is overwhelming and I usually end up playing quick games of Rocket League or Smash instead... I'm keeping an eye fixed on the Switch as well, I'll get it for Xenoblade 2 without doubt, but there seems to be a number of games being developed for it, like SMT, Fire Emblem, and a few other interesting ones... Someone send help.

Honestly last few years have been crazy with Biochem/Immunology and research. Now I have some more time on my hands so I'm slowly getting back into things on the RPG front.

Finished Tales of Zestiria. Probably my least favorite Tales in the franchise, but it kept me playing to its end which accounts for something despite its numerous problems.

Started up Tales of Berseria right after. 10 hours in so far and enjoying it, but am taking a break given the back-to-back fatigue has been setting in. Will be playing this for a good while this year though.

Still slowly working on Trails in the Sky FC. 30 hours in over the last few months but I'm having doubts as to whether I will actually see this series through. Just hasn't grabbed me as it did for so many. I really have tried to give the world-building real attention, but I discovered I really just don't care about the world or the NPC anecdotes as much as the central narrative, which is on hiatus for too much of the game. My tune may change with the cliffhanger into SC, but at the rate I have slowed down on playing, I worry I'll never see it.

I'd love to one day play Fire Emblem 3DS(any of them) or actually revisit my lagging save in Bravely Default as well. Hell SMTIV has been untouched since launch too! Why do I keep buying jRPGs?

Saga Scarlet Grace.
65+ hours in and I still didn't finish the story of one of the 4 characters.
I really like the fighting, the events everywhere.
The battle system is hard and very rewarding for people who like to think.

I am hitting major fatigue with the Trails series too. If I wasn't in a situation where I didn't have ample free time (and having nothing else to do), I feel I'd skip SC. Not at all connecting with anything outside the main narrative and Oliver.

I finished FC and went about 20 hours in SC and gave up. Everything about the game was good, but yeah got fatigued. A lot of reused assets and music made the games feel too samey, even with an engaging plot and characters.

Bravely Default (3DS).

SO much fun and it's really hard to put the system down. The dialogue, characters, story, and battles are all fantastic, and I love how it has so many features to make the gameplay a lot less tedious but rather easier, faster, and much much more captivating. This is such a great game.

Excellent choice. BD is one of the best original IPs on the 3DS.

Pro Tip: Don't bother with Bravely Second. I LOVED Default, but Second just takes place in the same world with lots of reused enemies and locations. It feels like Bravely Default Expansion Gaiden.

Hope you enjoy the game all the way to the end! I loved it. It's a great game.

I am in post-game of World of Final Fantasy; busy testing out various game mechanics. Should be done in a few days as there isn't much else left to do. It's been a solid 8/10 game, and I hope they make another.

Yup, it's my favourite turn based combat ever in any game. Bravely Second goes one step further and improves it even more with more QoL updates. Fantastic series, and I'm eagerly awaiting Bravely Third.

This month, I've retired Bravely Second and likely Pokémon Sun.

I've started up Dragon Quest 8 and Eterian Oddssey Untold 2. Both are great. I can't believe Untold 2 didn't get more love. It's OT is a fairly small thread for such a great game, and there's no LTTP for it in the past year. I guess it got swept under the rug. It's a more refined version of EOIV, but still "more of the same" if you already went through one of those games. My save file got corrupted about 3/4 of the way through EOIV, let's see how far I make it through Untold 2.

Also looking at how long this game is and the Cold Steel titles made me realize I wouldn't put the time investment into the series once I returned home in a few weeks. I'll have many games to catch up on, and with my time to be limited soon, I shouldn't spend it on titles which I feel meh towards.

I've been playing Final Fantasy XIII these past couple of days, as I'm on a Final Fantasy binge thanks to FFXV and I want to at least finish all of the FFs I own barring VII (waiting for the remake). It's... an interesting experience. I'm invested in the story
I'm up to where Hope tells his father about his mother's death and his bein a l'Cie. Happy that dad seems to be sticking up for his son ;_;
but I find myself begging the game not to make me play after each cutscene. I'm running past as many enemies as I can. I don't think I'm having a lot of fun, but I want to finish it on principle...

I need to return to Xenoblade Chronicles soon as well. I left off at
finally gaining entry to Prison Island
and I can't wait to see what happens next. I just got distracted by Christmas and the gift of a PS4 Pro + FFXV haha

Pro Tip: Don't bother with Bravely Second. I LOVED Default, but Second just takes place in the same world with lots of reused enemies and locations. It feels like Bravely Default Expansion Gaiden.

While it's true that Second borrows a lot from Bravely, I wouldn't say skip it altogether as it is just as fun of a game to play as its predecessor complete with tons of QoL enhancements that make it all the sweeter. Definitely don't play it right after Default, though. Give it a year or so.

I beat Esper Dream 2 - it's easy to hit the level cap but the difficulty is still pretty high in the final area, and you actually need to learn patterns to win.

Played a bunch more Lagrange Point - it was getting to be a bit of a grindy slog, but then I started to investigate the weapon fusion system, which was REAL ahead of its time back in 1991 (may very well be one of the first RPGs to my knowledge with a crafting system in place?), and made myself some strong weapons. Progress is going much smoother now. Just got to Ozone City.

Just finished Super Mario RPG.

Skies of Arcadia Legends, Wild Arms Alter Code: F, Shining Force III, Paper Mario 64, Baten Kaitos Origins, Breath of Fire V, or Suikoden III is next. Not sure which.

I didn't know Yakuza was an RPG series.

I'd say it is an action RPG. While the basic combat is more like a classic beat em up in 3d, the game has many trademarks of typical (J)RPGs. Many upgrades/unlockables, a big amount of sidestories, an elaborate storyline divided over 17 chapters, a huge amount of minigames, random encounters in the two hub towns (the type you see approach and can avoid).

Right now I've got the following that I'd say I'm semi-actively playing (too many games...):

Dragon Quest VII - hoo boy, this is not a game to be dipping in and out of and I doubt I will get very far with it as a result. I've barely done anything yet, but am determined that one day I will play a Dragon Quest game to completion (why did I pick the longest one????). I must persevere!

Final Fantasy XV - I've played for 20-something hours but it's a little bit blah, if I'm honest; it's more like playing Assassin's Creed than anything else, and the main story thus far (I'm on chapter 8 I think) hasn't been particularly interesting. Plus I seem to spend a lot of my time watching people drive places... I am determined to finish it (mostly so I can move on to something else!) but will have to be careful; I've done so many fetch quest missions that I'm rapidly approaching burnout, particularly as there's so little sense of accomplishment when the quest giver gives you another, almost identical quest as soon as you turn in the previous one EVERY TIME.

Trails of Cold Steel 2 - the beginning of this is really quite boring, for some reason. I've got through the first chapter (I think?) but given the way the first game ended I was hoping for something a bit more exciting to start off with. I know it'll "get there", but it's not there yet - hence why I've put it to one side.

Nier Automata Demo - I liked, but didn't love, the original Nier; I never played through it multiple times, though, so missed much of the fuss. I am still a little sceptical about the setting of Nier Automata - I'm more of a fantasy man than a sci-fi one, and the footage thus far only seems to show desolated washed-out factory settings rather than the crumbling grasslands and exotic architecture of the first game - but the demo was enormously good fun to play and its ending was intriguing.

Tales of Berseria. After finishing persona 5, I finally bought this game. My only complaint is that I can't run(or maybe you can later on?) and if I feel too lazy to go back to get something, I just move on. Other than that, very interesting game. Too bad I can only play it on Sundays.

I just shelved FFXV at chapter6. Gonna wait till the new patches and chapter 13 adjustments. Started up FFX HD Remaster. Never played on PS2. About an hour in and I'm not feeling the main character. Going to push on though, haven't played at old schools FF since FFVIII.

Since I moved out to a remote town in the middle of nowhere because of job assignment, I have no access to console gaming, so I tend to stick with mobile gaming. Last Jrpg I played was FF: tactics, I thoroughly enjoyed it after all those years.

I think I'm about to finish Xenoblade Chronicles. Started the game in December and played it a lot in January but couldn't finish it before going back to my job and the Uni. I'm about to hit 70 hours and I guess Ihave at least two bosses left. I like the game, but I don't think the game deserves all the praise that lead me to play it in the first place. The last few hours have been kind of a drag, I just want the game to end already. Once I finish it, I guess I'll write my final impressions but I don't know if I should do it here or in the lttp thread I made about it.

Once I'm done with it I think I should go back to play Zestiria from the beginning.

It's okay because you're not suppose to feel for the main character in the beginning. He starts off as a immature jock, a bit self absorbed, a bit whiny. (Not all bad because he's still friendly and he cares about others-ex: rushing in to help the summoner that he doesn't even know) He quickly grows and matures by what he experiences. Note the difference between the Tidus you play as and Narrator Tidus. This is normal and fine.

Nioh, and Xenoblade Chronicles X.

Though I've put 50 hours into XCX and I'm starting to grow very tired of it's more mundane quests and obtuse gear system. I really really hate that game's gear system. Like, fuck, everytime I think I want to play Xenoblade, I then remember that I need to stare at a billion menus figuring out which manufacture I need level up, then I gotta figure out the best way to that, then I gotta do it, then I gotta stare another few menus to make sure I get the right equipment for the right character for the right quests. Oh, and then I have to figure out how not to get my ass beat by mobs in another quest because all of that gear I just figured out how to get doesn't have the right resistances or bonuses.

Then I got a skell and it was the exact same shit for every piece of armor attached to it. Oh, and at this point, I've spent two hours in the game staring at menus and running to my computer to research shit just so I don't accidentally fuck it all up, and half an hour actually playing it. Why can't I just have a simple equip system with simple gear ratings and bonuses, to make running around this cool alien world while listening to the wackiest fucking soundtrack ever so much more enjoyable?

I'm probably going to reveal what a simpleton I am with this post and a bunch of people are going to shit on me for not figuring out what is actually a super easy system, but fuck, I can't think of that game as anything but daunting when it comes to configuring my party, and it really gets in the way of some of the most fun exploration and combat out there in a JRPG. Even Nioh's myriad interlocking systems and mechanics are a welcome simplification over XCX in my opinion. I also recently finished Nier for the first time (Endings A and B, watched C and D on youtube). Speaking of simple, easy systems, NIer had it in spades. Minimal time spent looking at menus, maximum time running around with my bud Weiss. It did have way too many mundane sidquests though, but those were easy to skip.

So, Nioh. I'm playing Nioh.

edit: and super looking forward to FFXII HD later this year. Never got super far into that game, but loved what I played, and have always put off playing the Zodiac version on an emulator. Now we're getting in HD on PS4. Awesome.

Just started out on phantasy star on the SMS (via emulation). Holy hell this game is tough from the get go. First hour all I can do is run out of the town, do a few small steps to a couple of battles then have to run back for healing!

In the epilouge of Trails in Cold Steel 2. Lol the plot is a bit off the rails crazy atm but im interested at where the hell they're going with it all.

Yeah... I'm gonig to go the other direction. The systems in XCX are complicated and convoluted... but they don't mater. This game does not REQUIRE you to understand all its stats and systems on top of systems. You can probably beat the whole are without ever leaving up any manufacturer. I mean, I went HOURS without switching out equipment or weapons. If you get stuck anywhere in the game you're probably just under leveled and you need to walk around the enemies that are killing you, instead of trying to hit your head against the wall.

XCX is really different in that way. There are challenges that you aren't supposed to overcome, yet. Sometimes the simplistic solution around a problem in that game is come back to it later. If you are just exploring and laying down probes, you're going to be alright.

Bravely Default (3DS).

SO much fun and it's really hard to put the system down. The dialogue, characters, story, and battles are all fantastic, and I love how it has so many features to make the gameplay a lot less tedious but rather easier, faster, and much much more captivating. This is such a great game.

Hope you enjoy the game all the way to the end! I loved it. It's a great game.

Please don't do this.

Play Bravely Second, it is a lovely game, with a lovely story. The mechanics are good improvements of the first, and after you play BS, it is hard to go back to Bravely Default.

Right now I'm juggling Earthbound and Final Fantasy VI. Earthbound I got about halfway through and never finished, and I never played FFVI before now (I know, I know). Determined to make it through both games over the course of the next couple months.

P4G sort of sparked my interest in JRPGs so I'm going back and playing some of the all-time greats I missed.

Started playing Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth again in earnest now that I feel like I'm mostly done with RE7 for now. What a good game. About 20 hours in, Chapter 7. Some of the dialogue is a bit long in the tooth and now that I live in/can understand a few words of Japanese its fun to hear and see the localization differences. It's usually minor stuff like one character listing the ingredients in the drink but the text being different for the last item probably assuming no one outside Japan would know what the hell that is lol.

Also find it weird that when I play games with Japanese voices I tend to skip it alot because I'm reading faster than the lines are delivered. -bad habbit- I guess haha.

Not sure if I will continue to do all the side quests though, most are pretty simple and not a hassle to do but I kinda want to just finish the main plot and move on.

Finished off Kingdom Hearts 0.2 and Back Cover, and now on to Kingdom Hearts DDD. Flowmotion makes the gameplay so much fun!

I am playing ff7 for the first time, I started it a year ago and I just got the second airship and I am trying to not use guides to figure out where to go haha.

I picked up The World Ends With You Solo Remix for my iPhone 6s Plus. It plays extremely well. I had tried the DS version two years ago, but I just couldn't handle all of the stuff happening on screen. Finally decided to try the iOS version. So far so good! Only on Day 2 at the moment, but I absolutely adore this soundtrack. It was one of the things which drew me to the game the last time I tried playing it.

Dragon Quest V ds. The battle/skill system is pretty basic, but the plot is really good. Now grinding for the last area and final boss.

I'm about 12 hours into Ni No Kuni, and a handful of hours into the Dragon Quest 7 Remake for 3DS. I had to take a break from Ni No Kuni because I'm now realizing I just won't have enough money for the items I need unless I do sidequests, which I just wasn't really wanting to grind through at the time.

Just started out on phantasy star on the SMS (via emulation). Holy hell this game is tough from the get go. First hour all I can do is run out of the town, do a few small steps to a couple of battles then have to run back for healing!

Stick with it, the first part is pretty tough when you just have Alis. Grind a few levels and return to Suelo to heal. Game definitely gets easier in everything but the level layouts, until the final battle.

I played through Exile: Wicked Phenomenon this past weekend. There's some site that has all patches that undo the balance changes Working Designs made in their releases, and this was one of the games with the patch. I applied the patch and proceeded to beat the game in like 2 hours. Game is no where near as good as the original in terms of music, story (although it's funny how a lot of the names of things are based on real religions... "Klispins" aka Christians, or "Bindoos" instead of "Hindus", and the item names are all renamed drugs ("Cananabis", "Harsheesh", "Coca", and even "Peyote").

But the levels are much smaller and more linear than the first game, aside from the pyramid and final level, and combat is just as easy. The overhead/town segments don't nearly have the same level of puzzle solving and are more like - go to a town, upgrade your weapons, leave and go to the next area. Music lacks the 90's house feel of the first game, which is disappointing. Graphics are beautiful for the console, though. Biggest problem is that you need to be to the far edge of the screen before it scrolls, leading to many cheap hits by enemies you can't see until it's too late.

So I'm playing SMTIII and I'm fighting Ahriman and each turn it restricts me from using something like physical attacks or magic. If you mess it up it instantly kills you. But every so often it seems to kill me anyways, for no reason? What ...

Maybe I missed an "and?"

Edit: Ah, I misread "don't use anything but x" as "don't use x.'
