Nintendo Switch Previews are coming in

Watch the Gamexplain footage when he takes it outside. It's not exactly ideal, but it doesn't fare that much differently compared to your average phone (unlike what the wording of engadget would like to suggest).

Thanks :) I watched the video, and agree that it doesnt seem that bad - similar to using a phone in bright light as you say :)

How are all of these people satisfied with getting Zelda on the Wii U, when Nintendo looks to have created one of the most elegant, well made and critically praised pieces of hardware in decades?

Like, I'd be crying into my keyboard as I typed, "yep, good thing I got a Wii U."

I got nice handhelds and I'll probably get the Switch too because it looks like a device with potential but I'll wait till Nintendo gets out of what feels like the open beta phase of their launch. I might end up saving £100, get a (non-faulty) joycon with a d-pad and nicer colours, games to keep me busy and maybe even an internet browser so I can watch twitch and giantbomb in bed - hopefully without paying for internet access on it.

In the mean time, I'll be playing Zelda no problem and not feel like I'm missing out on anything. Other than zelda in bed...oh... wait... gamepad.

Though I am going to see the switch in person tomorrow and probably want to get it straight away. Luckily I'll be coming back home to my systems and should be able to remain smart and resist till it makes sense.

Plus, I can use the Wii U version on my beastly PC, what's likely going to be the best version once the emulator supports it. And you know they'll be going full steam ahead on that.

So I don't blame people for saying that in response to Jason's tweet saying rushed console but zelda.

...also, "in decades"? wut - maybe for Nintendo.

So the last Nintendo console I had was the Gamecube.

Missed out on a lot of good titles on the Wii and WiiU.

What are you guys thoughts' on how well Nintendo will do digital backwards compat. with those platforms on the Switch?

You're not going to get digital BC with Wii and Wii U games (there really isn't a difference between digital games and physical games). The systems are just to different.

The best we're going to get is ports like Mario Kart.

Wii U? No way.
They have updated ports to sell

Wii its a possibility with the joy controllers

I just watched EZA preview and one thing really looks interesting. This is the popup window you get when update fails

and that thing is almost 1:1 with some Android popup windows. So it really looks like that Switch OS is based on Android OS.

Good catch, I don't know why more people aren't talking about this. I remember this was speculated on a few weeks back, but this would appear to confirm it! That's perfect for me since mine will likely be plugged in in handheld mode most of the time.

Me either! I was gearing up to present the information again because I thought it got buried on that other page.

It's something really weird, but I honestly wasn't sure if the JoyCon would charge while undocked and not charging the console. It'd be an odd scenario to have the JoyCon detached long enough to drain their battery before switching the portable mode, but... the first time it happened to someone you know there'd be an outrage thread.

Preparing for a ton of these pop ups during launch day.

What a load of crap, only a nintendo fan would spin that as a positive.

I wasn't spinning it as a positive. I was rightly pointing out it isn't a clearcut negative. You can engage my arguments if you'd like, but I guess calling me out as a 'nintendo fan' is easier for you. Even though, you know next to nothing about my gaming history or preferences.

I don't own an Xbox nor have any interest in MS or their consoles.

I can't imagine popping into the Xbox threads and even bothering to read and trash some of the things people may say. Some people have way too much time I guess, because I see a lot of that going on this thread and the other Switch threads.

It is very well designed. But mostly not that appealing to those of us who only game on our big screens. Fantastic piece of hardware for the portable users though.

I'm just going to play Zelda 100% on the TV either way, and unless the Wii U version is gimped (can't imagine it is or we'd have seen more of it to encourage people like me to get Switches to play the vastly superior version), thus I can't justify a Switch when there's nothing else I'd really want until Mario (sick of MK8 and Splatoon and don't want a port/sequel respectively currently, rest don't interest me).

Right? It gave me OUYA vibes.

Yeah, but I'm not the type to play through multiple times. I'll probably play it once and be done with it.

Which would be a huge mistake when it comes to Nier/Drakengard.

If you weren't going to do at least a second playthrough of the original Nier for example then you might as well have not bothered with the first one.

They aren't full multiple playthroughs from scratch by the way, the subsequent ones go by much faster and add a ton to the story.

The only negative is that there are other Mass games Nier launch that I'm interested in also playing, but this purcahse is having quite the Effect on my wallet!

Mario Kart™ 8

On 3rd March it'll take all Knight for me to Shovel those Snipperclips, my Breath will be Wild. I'll need to get a Puyo, a real Malibu! And see if Stacey can help…invent me young?

Well if you haven't preordered one it's going to be a hell of a hassle to get one anytime soon anyways. Still, unless you're strapped for cash, if you want to play Mario, Splatoon, or any future Nintendo first party games it's an inevitability. Why not spend the extra to play what seems like one of the best games the year in the best possible light?

It's too late man!

Hopefully the supply isn't restrained in the fall and I can see how Mario is shaping up to be.

Curious if giantbomb will do anything today or tomorrow.

All of the weird embargos around this thing make me doubt it. Just like how they won't put up a QL of Horizon until next week when they can do whatever they want. The restrictions of what you can show doesn't really fit with their style, and they don't generally do unboxings (XB1 Slim being a recent exception)

Some people would like to play the definitive version of a huge one of a kind game we've been waiting ages for.

True, but from the little we've seen there's not likely to be a huge difference between the two versions. If there was a giant gap we'd likely have seen more of the Switch version to entice Wii U owners like me who are only interested in Zelda out of all the launch through summer games to take the plunge.

Sounds like it's just 900p vs. 720p, some more details here and there etc. That's a nice benefit for sure, but not enough for me to drop the cash and then have the system gather dust until Mario given my disinterest in the other announced titles.

If the Switch was a huge power bump and the difference was things like 1080p vs. 720p, 60FPS vs. 30FPS, then sure I'd probably bite the bullet, or just wait and not play Zelda until the Switch had enough games for me to be sure I want one.

good thing i have a wii u

That Wii U might come in handy then...

So basically I'm better off with the wii u version and getting the switch later on like I figured from the beginning. Works for me.
Exactly my thoughts atm. I'll admit I was extremely hyped for the Switch after the January presentation (I blame the awesome Zelda trailer for that) and immediately pre-ordered it when it became available (plus lots of accessories like Pro controller, carrying case etc.). But to be honest, while the Switch sure seems to be a nice and valuable device, the only games I'm really interested in so far are BotW and Mario Odyssey, which won't release till November/December. So that'd be a 500€+ console purchase (incl. the mentioned accessories and the BotW Collector's Edition) to play a single game (that I could play for a fraction of the cost on my WiiU, even releasing on the same day). The last time I did something similar to this was with the Wii, which I only bought at launch to get Twilight Princess a week earlier (EU release dates). Never again. After finishing TP, the Wii only collected dust for almost a year before it became a video game system worth owning (with the releases of SPM, MP3 and Mario Galaxy).
And while the first year doesn't seem half as underwhelming for the Switch games-wise, I'd rather spend a tenth of the aforementioned sum and just play the near-identical WiiU version of BotW. I gave Nintendo the benefit of the doubt far too often and always regretted it when I bought one of their systems too early in their life cycle (with DS being the worst offender, the first model was just hideous and half-baked).
It's very disappointing that the Switch's OS is so barebones and even lacks features I - mistakenly, as it seems - considered to be standard for Nintendo systems by this point (like the great activity log). Also no concrete VC details presented by now, one week prior to release - was expected from Nintendo, but still... Then those Joycons synch issues (even if they'd get fixed on release), just everything about this release feels extremely rushed, and it starts to worry me enough to rather cancel my pre-order than getting burned by buying on launch day again.

It really is. I'm going Zelda, Nier, then Horizon. Mostly because I know Horizon is long, and from what I've seen in the Nier thread it's a shorter game, like 7 or 8 hours.

Lets not sell the game that short. Someone in the OT said it took them 13+ hours to beat the game. I imagine its around 12 hours average, less if you rush the game and 20+ hours if you do all side missions.

You just sold it short too lol

So? What's the issue here?

I don't know...

Swan Song (Wii U) vs. Christening (Switch) lol

But like I can play it on my WiiU.

Yeah, you and... Well not a lot of people actually.

If you don't own a Wii U (Which is more common than not even among video game fans), and you want to play Zelda, a Switch is a no-brainer. I belive that's the suggestion Jason is making here.

Where can you "Post" screenshots? Facebook? Since Miiverse is no more... *shakes fist*

They haven't specifically confirmed which social media sites will be supported.

I'd imagine Facebook and Twitter for sure, maybe G+, and maaaayybbbeee (probably not) Tumblr.

Most likely to every social media site you linked your profile too. Which was G+, Facebook, and Twitter

I forgot about those linked accounts; that makes sense.

Yeah the dark theme looks very reminiscent of Holo era android. It would be odd as hell if it was Android, and going with Holo design themes as Google don't recommend that.

Doubtful. Not a stable enough setup.

The UI being similar to Android popup windows is likely just an understandable coincidence, as there are only so many ways to display a pop up error notification with a dark theme and a lot of them look very similar.

100% my thought process. I also canceled my PS4 preorder near launch. So it's not just Nintendo, I've just gotten older and decided I'm done with day one console hype. The first year plus tends to just be too sparse for me, and by the time there's actually enough games out/coming out to keep the system from being a paper weight for me for long stretches there's either a price drop and or official bundle, or at the least retailers have started offering their own sales, bundles, gift card with purchase and so on.

While it's not just Nintendo, my experiences with the Wii (long drought after TP for me, and another one after Mario Galaxy and MP3) and just in general not liking the overall Wii U library much on top of the terrible post launch drought just give me too much pause. I too got hyped with the reveals and still preordered despite that, but I'm glad I snapped out of it before it was too late.

At earliest I'll reassess post E3 and seeing if they've announced more games that are must plays for me for 2017. If not the earliest I'd buy is around Mario, and then only if I was sure the 2018 slate was going to have something that's a must play on it for me at least every 2 or 3 months. I don't need constant releases as it's a secondary platform for me, but I need more than the 1 or 2 games I cared about most years on Wii and Wii U to buy in again.

Being able to easily use some form of wireless headphones while docked is also huge for me as that's my most common way of gaming at home as my fiance is often working or sleeping when I'm gaming. From the other thread it's still uncertain if or when there will be wireless headset support of any kind.

I highly doubt it's android, but man that dark theme is so Holo.

Yep, that style of UI design isn't really specifically android-esque. That's just what's in-fashion right now.
