Nintendo Switch Previews are coming in

I'm not sure if anyone else here who's received a Switch has posted this, but now that we can post pictures of the console I thought I'd let y'all know that the power supply fits snugly anywhere on your power strip. I know some were worried about it when we first saw it in pictures. No problems here:

Unless of course your bar outlets are aligned like this which is very common lol

Question for any outlet/current preview Switch unit owner to consider, thanks in advance.

Will it be at all possible to collect a firmware update for my newly purchased Switch game before I leave the retail store?

I read with interest the Kotaku/Stephen Totilo early impressions, and the 'Software Update Via Local Users' option piqued my curiosity.

It doesn't seem live yet, but could there please be some added scrutiny of this feature?

A scenario I just thought up. Hear me out:

1. The store could theoretically have a base Switch unit set up and set to transmit the data to local users.

2. The store could advertise that if users bring in their Switch, they can get the firmware update in store.

3. I buy a game. It needs a day one firmware update.

4. I pop the game in then and there, at the point of sale. Boom, game updated.

5. I leave, no need to download it at home. I can play straight away.

Is that outside the realm of possibility? It'd be a question worth asking, wouldn't it?

Cheers all. Keep on Switching on.

Yo, if you have a Switch, could you test the joycon signal problem with the charging grip? It'd be much appreciated.

Aww man. I forgot Snipperclips is Eshop so they can't play it.

I was hoping to see previews of that. Oh well, will any of these guys get Bomberman?

Found my tape measure.

The USB-C cable that comes with the Charging Grip and the Pro Controller is 5 feet. 1.52 meters for those without superior US units.

There's absolutely no way Nintendo hasn't been fully aware of this issue. None. GameXplain easily replicated the problem multiple times.

Agree. On the one hand, this seems like an almost unbelievable oversight. On the other, I can't imagine they aren't aware of it at this point. I'm not onboard the "LET'S PANIC!" train (yet), but this is concerning. Nintendo needs to get out in front of this ASAP, both from a PR perspective as well as simply making sure everyone who experiences the issue understands it's easily fixable with a firmware update and/or joycon replacement if that doesn't work.

What? Zelda is a wii u port, mario kart was on wii u, splatoon was on wii u, hyrule warriors, a xenoblade (2 oncluding vc) , mario 3d world, etc.

People really underwstimate Wii Us library...

Yes but my point is how long did it take for the Wii U to get these franchises? For the Switch they are positioned to all come within year 1, which means year 1 of Switch is equivalent or better than the majority of Wii U's entire first party library which is what Emily claimed.

he is talking about wii u library because the poster early listed games/franchises as if they were never on wii u

No that's not what I meant, I clarified above.

Some transmission coefficients for common materials @ 2 GHz:

Brick: -4 dB
Plexiglass: -0.35 dB
Glass: -0.5 dB
Drywall: -0.5 dB
Particle Board: -1.6 dB
Plywood: -2 dB
Cinder Block: -6.7 dB

For refernece:

Human abdomen: - 50 dB (150 mm thick)

Simply put, biological systems are very lossy. Your wood door on an entertainment system won't be an issue.

For those who don't understand decibels: 3 dB is a loss in power density of 2x, 10 dB is 10x, 20 dB is 100x.... 50 dB is a loss in power density of 100,000x

Of course since the antennas in these devices are not very directive there are lots of reflected paths to the receiver and the total loss is not as high as the line of sight transfer function.

This might surprise some a bit, but I'm sure a lot of people think the launch year lineup is better than the combine output of the Wii U and 3DS's first year.

The real question is how is a casual who owned either the Wii or 3DS but didn't buy the Wii U view the console. In terms of the Wii U it's pretty much the most hardcore Nintendo console because only hardcore Nintendo fans bought it.

A person who didn't own the Wii U isn't going to care Zelda is available on the system or that MK8D is a port. You have pretty much two of the biggest games that could launch on a system releasing back to back months, a new IP in the summer(a few years ago people were complaining about lack of new IPs), the sequel to the best selling console game in Japan this gen Splatoon and a new Mario, Xeno 2 in the fall. If you are person who buys Nintendo consoles or Nintendo handhelds for the 1st party games but didn't buy the Wii U it's a very nice lineup.

How would a person who for example bought a 2DS last Christmas due to Pokemon Go look at the device - having never owned a Nintendo console before. Does he look at the lineup and say - yes that's a good value for x4 the amount I paid for the 2DS or does he need Pokemon Stars and a few more games to be announced to seal the deal.

Switch's major issue to most people on GAF in terms of lineup is the fact that it isn't launching with a bunch of major games. To me it's natural from a marketing perspective, you need short term focus and although there are videos and marketing for the other titles - there is no doubt that Zelda is the major focus in the West for the launch. MK8D is not really being pushed right now but Nintendo will be marketing the hell out of it late March/April. Splatoon 2 is already front and center because it's the system seller in Japan and globaltestfires, WW tournaments, concerts and events are going to fuel marketing there culminating in it's release. Arms will get it's spot under the headlights ahead of it's release. The real question is what fills the gaps because I definitely think Nintendo would want to release a major game every month/month and half during the first year of the system.
Also major third party support will come from the West only if the Switch is successful, Japanese 3rd Party support is already beginning to ramp up but I don't expect anything major to be announced in that regard until early summer.

Man... the UI looks so quick, simple, and nice. Makes me want one.

So much better than Wiiu.

Requiring Nintendo account for friend list is promising. Points to unified friend list.

Except it doesn't cover the majority of Wii Us output. The statement is pure bullshit through and through. People hate the Wii U and the Switch will outsell it handily, we get it. No need to ignore facts just to continue hyping the Switch.

Yeah, I am excited for this thing after having used the xbox one ui for the last couple of years,

5 feet also, but it's not a cable per se. It's a full AC adapter. You cannot detach the plug.

Damn was hoping it was a bit longer. The 3DS charger cable is like 6'6" and even that isn't always long enough. I don't plan on using my Switch docked much at all, so I'll want to use the charger around the house when I'm in bed or on the couch for longer sessions. Was hoping it would be long enough for that, especially due to the placement of the charging port. Well nothing a cheap 2 dollar extension cable won't fix.

This is pretty interesting. I'd like to see how much "body blocking" would affect other wireless controllers and if this issue is so noticeable with the Joycons simply because their tiny size makes them much easier to completely engulf in your hand if you are using them without the grip.

I imagine this being more problematic next to the European fat and round plugs. I'd just place the brick at the edge, facing outward though. Problem solved.

My plan is to hook the Switch up in my office and play on my 1080P monitor for when I'm docked.

But if I set this up in the living room on occasion and have these sync issues, that would be disappointing.

Hopefully it can be resolved with a patch.

What is the general consensus on the things that people are allowed to talk about that does not include the connectivity issues with the joy cons?

Very positive from what I've seen. Varying degrees of preference when it comes to the Joy-Cons free or in the grip vs the Pro Controller. UI is fast and snappy, hardware feels very high quality. Battery Life is solid, BotW draining in 2.5 to 3 hours depending on settings, much better than 3DS when in sleep mode drain, only 2% drop after 8 hours. Overall they've all sounded very upbeat and positive about the system. Even with known stuff like no video apps, browser, VC at launch and such.
