Capcom Pro Tour 2017 announced

The detailed of the Capcom Pro Tour 2017 for Street Fighter V have just been published at the Capcom Unity website.

Here are some of the changes I noted, compared to last year's CPT:
  • The price pool has been increased from $500k to $600k.
  • Premier Events no longer grant auto-qualification into Capcom Cup, only points. Last year's champions are automatically qualified.
  • The goal is to make it easy to see on the CPT website, at any time, which players are in or out of the Capcom Cup.
  • The amount of points gained at different events has been tweaked, to allow for the difference between getting top 32 at EVO vs top 8 at other ranking events, for example.
  • Last chance qualifiers are regional finals are region locked.
  • Online Ranking Events will be expanded to four per region, and segmented per region based on proximity.

It's nice to see the prize pool get expanded. I guess Sony sticking around as the CPT sponsor may have something to do with it.

That said, I'm glad that they locked the Last Chance Qualifiers by region. Last thing we need is for the likes of Tokido to roll in & take North America's last-chance qualification slot.

I don't like this change.

Someone could win a big tournament and still not qualify for Capcom Cup because that may be the only tournament they could've gone to.

This again gives big advantage to players who travel a lot versus players who don't travel much but still win.

That'd make sense. Either way, more cash for the CPT is a good thing, & I'd assume that we'll get another CPT Premier Pack for SFV to expand the Capcom Cup prize pool.

From the looks of it, winning EVO nets you a metric shit-ton of points, so it may not be an issue for Premier Events.

I live in austin. Dreamhack was neat last year, especially if you were into other games too. Good food not far from the convention center. I recommend checking it out. Plus since it is Dreamhack, if you buy the ticket to bring a setup, people bum it up and stay overnight at their table.
 
As mentioned above, we felt the auto-qualification process in previous years resulted in unnecessary layers of complexity. That said, we still want to reward winners of Premier Events and take steps to ensure they qualify for Capcom Cup at the end of the year.

If the player who wins is still not in the Top 30 of the Global Leaderboards after the 400-point boost, the qualified list of players from the Global Leaderboards will be reduced by one, moving the bottom player out of contention

I'll look into it. But the problem is that I'm in Houston & the drive alone may be a bit of a problem. It's not a nightmarish distance, but my car only takes premium gas (oh how I wish I had a Tesla right now).
 
Hrm...I don't think they coordinated very well on some of those tournaments, considering they told us at NWM that we were going to have a CPT event later in the year (and not NWM)...and then listed NWM as a CPT event.

Looks much easier to follow than last year's, so that makes me happy. I'm also a fan of the change in point distribution and the fact that regional finals/qualifiers are now region locked.

Hopefully the whole ELeague thing doesn't take too many players away from attending the events they normally would. I'm ready to watch this!

...as contradictory to their "we want to make it less complex" statement. If the above is the most complicated part, they most certainly succeeded in making it less complex than last year. Not that that's saying much. Near the end I was pretty much taking any random commentator's word for who would make it in depending on specific tournament results, and even they were wrong sometimes.

Agreed 100%. And I doubt Karin will get hit as hard (if at all?) by the rebalance as characters like Laura/Rog, so I think he can do some serious damage if he makes it out to majors.

Not to mention his trash talk is also pretty entertaining, haha.

That's probably why there will be more online events this year.

Geared toward players who don't travel as much.
 
WOO that's a whole lotta Bison dollars. Nice to see they managed to up the prize pool from $500K to $600K this year. Can't wait for the show to begin and for the salt and tears to flow!

Positives
-Much better point distribution that rewards premier tournaments. Before, it was smarter to just get points at ranking events due to how much easier they were, yet still granted so many points.
-Point distribution extended to more than just top 16
-Online events split up per area of region. Last year most regions only allowed a player to compete in 1 online tournament, but NA players were granted 2 online events to compete at.
-Latin America gets the least amount of premiers. They're by far the weakest region, but they still are able to get into Capcom Cup due to regional finals.
-Group stage for Capcom Cup? I assume they're going to split it up into blocks. Last year they messed up by going through all of winners, then going through all of losers round 1, etc... For example. Last year Mago and Infil lost after the first 2 matches of Capcom Cup. So right after just two matches we knew Mago vs Infil was the first match of losers bracket. Because they decided to go through all of winners, Mago vs Infil had to wait for 14 more matches before they could play their match. If it was split up into 4 blocks, Mago vs Infil would only have to wait for 2 more matches to be able to play their losers match.

Negatives
-Asia the strongest region gets the least amount of ranking events. Particularly Japan which could have used more than 1 event. Once again, this is only going to force the Asian players to snipe points in smaller regions because trying to gain points where most likely most of the best players will compete at is suicide for your capcup chances. The CPT heavily favoring NA players makes it much harder for non-sponsored Asian players to get into Capcom Cup. This messes up seeding as well.
 
Wait, doesn't removing the automatic qualifiers benefit the people who travel more? I thought they were trying to balance that out this year, instead they swung hard in the other direction.
