The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild **SPOILER FREE** Impression Thread

I love quest markers personally, I hate wandering around open worlds and trying to figure out where I need to go. Don't enjoy it, and too many games to get to to add playtime with that crap for me personally.

So I'm glad they're in their, but able to be turned off for people that prefer to explore on their own with limited guidance though. More games need to give gamers more options in how to play IMO.

Ugh. When you're following an arrow you don't get to immerse yourself in the world.

If devs implement good game design, you dont need to aimlessly wander. The arrow is a crutch for bad design.

This made me think of Witcher 3. I liked to have the waypoint on my map/radar but the pathing to get there I immediately turned off. I just want to know the direction I need to go and I'll find myself getting there in due time. Don't hold my hand from point A to B.

So Walmart sold this to me this morning and I absolutely love it. Ive only put in few hours because I have a wife and twins but this far beyond better than anything I got out of skyward sword! I won't be able to put much time into because of life but man I'm really excited to play this. I pretty much just ran around and explored for the whole time that I played.

Gamepad is only used if you want to play the game there instead of the TV, otherwise it's just black telling you to click it to play.

My god, it's really hitting home just how much this game has changed direction over the years. so much for this game "using the Wii U gamepad to its fullest".

It's probably for the best, of course, but they must have cut a TON of gamepad functionality when doing a Switch version was decided upon.

Yeah it would have been nice for sure. And I'd like to clarify and say that while I listed the issues with the fps at times, it's nothing in ANY way that has impacted my enjoyment of the game - at all. I notice it less and less and I continue on. But some may have real issues with stuff like that so just want to be honest. And it's nothing that's new, others have spoken to it as well.
So do the dips rarely have any effect on combat and puzzle solving? That's the kind of stuff that drives me insane and makes me not want to play a game.

Aw man I was hoping they would put the map or something on the gamepad. Thanks for the info I'll grab the digital version then.
There was initially but then Switch happened. Then again Wii U is already struggling to run the game so havimg extra stuff on second screen would make it even worse.

So far I have yet to have it impact any gameplay in that way. It's really a non-issue imho. When you see how well the game plays and all the visuals as they are on the Wii U, you can't help but be blown away. You can see they clearly got every last raw bit of power they could from the system. So much polish in just about all aspects, the fps hit is just kinda acceptable imo.

This game is dope. As someone who has never been a Zelda fan nor beat any of the games, I can see some Skyrim and Shadow of the Collosus parallels.

Playing it on the gamepad is great, you can sit in bed and chill with Zelda. Plus, the camera movement speed was too slow for me so I bumped it up to fast, which made aiming with the bow harder - but you can just use the gamepad gyro for fine precision. Worked out great.

Hearing the harsh views some people are giving to NoAs voice acting, im quite happy that NoE actually did the work of a big publisher and decided to localise the game with FIGS dubs. The only dubs ive really enjoyed from NoA are TW101 and Kid Icarus Uprising. Im 100% sure european dubs for game like other m and xenoblade X would have improved those aspects a lot.
And super happy that nintendo hired talented and professional voice actors from catalonia school of voice acting for the spanish version. They fucked up twice with the spanish smash narrator and I mever undertand why was the case they fucked up so badly with that game.

I could not get past the first 15 seconds of the Spanish trailer, that's how much I disliked the dub.

It's a shame that the English version is (apparently) no good but I guess that's the one I'll use. I wish we could set separate voice and text though, that would be ideal.

Yeah man I was just casually walking through Walmart and boom! Saw it in the display case. Looked at my wife and all she said was "gotta at least try." 10 mins later walked out no problems. Felt like I pulled one over on them haha.
Yup, it's happened in a few locations apparently. Was this you? haha

Damn, very jelly, enjoy it!

Is there like a hashtag or site for following places that break street dates lol, Friday so close yet so far away.

I don't know what the consensus is so far and take my impressions with a grain of salt of course but I've been playing for around 10-15 hours and I'm not completely feeling it...

There are some genuine Zelda moments here and there, when the scenery, the action and the subtle soundtrack mix together perfectly to create a beautiful sense of adventure that sends chills down my spine. There are Xenoblade moments of awe derived from the simple sight of the land that lies ahead. And there are so many moments of little frustrations.

The combat forces you to switch weapons in almost every fight and the result is that I never have time to get a feel for their movesets and the inventory is so damn small... I like what little I have seen of the story but there's not enough tying the game together for me. The framerate on Wii U is pretty terrible at times. It's weird to see that in a modern Nintendo game. And the gamepad... They don't want to use it? Okay. But in that case don't have a goddamn message flashing on it the entire time!

The best part so far has been interacting with the goofy inhabitants of a village I ran into early on. The NPCs are charming as hell.

Sorry if I sound pretty negative. It's a good game obviously but like everybody here I hold the Zelda series to an extremely high standard and this entry is a little too rough around the edges for me. Hopefully the game will change my mind in the next few days.

Ahhhh panic!!!!

:P

Thanks for sharing. So what's wrong, that it doesn't have that constant zelda hand crafted experience, instead it's spread out?

Wiiu?

The inventory is expandable, also you should do that cool thing where you just throw that badly damaged weapon at their face for a critical hit.

Yeah, there's a little bit of that. It's not too bad as there's plenty to see and do but I find the enemy encounters pretty uninteresting and very repetitive. I think I just don't like the combat that much or at least it hasn't clicked yet. It's stuck between classic Zelda combat and RPG combat with stats that actually matter. And I wish they had picked a side. I'm still early in the game though.

Haha, I throw them every time! I have discovered that the inventory is expandable but I haven't been able to do it yet.

Shit, just clicked on the spoiler thread by mistake (meant to click on an unrelated thread right next to it, not an issue with threads looking similar FYI) Luckily I nope'd out of it quick.

Wii U, that was a close one.

Not so sure where this comes from. The two times Ive spent playing the plateau demo the woodcutter's Axe and the traveler's or warrior's sword all lasted through 2-5 bokoblins and gave me plenty of time while locked on and strafing/dodging to get a fine sense of the quick attack and held down charge attack animations/priority of those basic examples of one handed and two handed weapons.

*Shrug* hope it turns a corner for you or the more challenging enemies with elemental resistances and buffs show up to help that.

How did you do this? I tried to buy a pro controller at Walmart today and the register blocks it.

Maybe because it's not a switch accessory?

Heard reports of Walmarts breaking the street date. Visited 5 today. Not one would sell me a copy. All citing it will go up for sale on Friday at midnight.

yeah usually wal marts are prevented from selling stuff early by the computer system itself. so even if an employee goofs and tries to sell you something early it shouldn't actually scan.

Just spend 5 hours with my wii u copy! I havent been drawn in such a world / game in years. Game is a true beauty.

Frame rate drops are not that frequent but are really bad sometimes. Its not game breaking tho.
