Confirmed - Joycon Latches Will Break If You Break Them (Giant Bomb)

Some jackass made a previous thread about joycons flying off switches due to the latch mechanism not working.

Well...

-bare in mind, GB never made a video focusing on that, nor did they write an article. It just came up in a 2hour plus premium only video as something they noticed and weren't sure but concerned about. It wasn't clickbait in the slightest.

Drop me on concrete if old.

Not exactly the most durable machine ever.

But I suppose dropping it on concrete is going to cause some sort of damage.

Yup, they broke it after dropping it on concrete. Criticism like this sucks if people aren't informed about the background reasons.

But what broke, the joycons or the switch?

Edit:

@jeffgerstmann

Yeah, the tiny plastic tabs on the joycons wore down or snapped and aren't long enough to properly latch into the unit anymore.

So it was just the joycons

This and when they dissapear into vinnies giant hands will be the ultimate litmis test of nintendo's revamped customer service

They should've been forged from diamond! Whatever happened to that seal of quality?!

Seriously though, it's good to know they really are sturdy, just don't go breaking them.

Well, this is concrete evidence that the entire launch is a failure.
Heh, Jeff.

To be fair, they mentioned that in the video, and they didn't present this as a criticism so much as "Huh, this is a weird thing that happens." People taking that out of context painted it in a more negative light.

Anything can break if you drop it the wrong way and get unlucky. Switch has plenty of problems but I don't see this as any sort of knock on the device.

And it still took a decent amount of force do dislodge the broken joycons. I think the build quality of these things is shaping up to be very good, signal issues notwithstanding.

Good thing I take upmost good care of the few devices I bought with my hard earned money so this will not happen to me. Don't drop ur techy things into concrete, kidz!

my gamecube could survive a 2-floor fall...
Anytime you drop something, there is a chance, that something can break. Some products have a higher and others a lower chance. This could simply be bad luck. That's why nobody (except idiots) create a statistic with just one case.

Even years later after the dust settled on 8.8 for twilight, Jeff comes back with plenty left in the tank for Nintendo

The war continues lol

My 3DS was a tank that fell on hard surfaces multiple times and kept on trucking, preorder cancelled.

Seriously though, are there cases for the Switch that you can use while playing them?

I love how Jeff doesn't say that he dropped it on concrete in his tweets.
Its a little misleading if you don't know.

Is that why Jeff was not too hot on Zelda? Because his Switch broke?

I wouldn't even interpret his comments as not too hot. He even said he really wanted to play it on his personal unit and that's why he wasn't putting much time into it on the office Switch.

I dropped my tablet on concrete and the screen broke. Never buying one again.
Seriously, though. Don't drop your stuff on concrete.

Its not as alarming as the left joycon issues but this does raise questions about the connector being easily broken.

I hope Jeff doesnt get death threats sent to his house over this one.

Thanks for the advice, one of main reasons why I want the Switch was to drop it on the floors, but now that I know is not possible, I'll cancel my preorder.
