Confirmed - Joycon Latches Will Break If You Break Them (Giant Bomb)

Hmm, normally to help protect mobile devices from drops a case protector or something would usually work for most cases. But that doesn't look like it would have helped here because it would just cover the joycons right?.

I think it's kind of disingenuous for people to be saying "of course it would break if you drop it" no matter which side you are on. We have very little data on how the device handles drops as of yet. But what we do know is that kids, which this is geared towards, are very prone to dropping stuff. One drop might not do it from a small height but repetitive small drops might and that is likely to happen over the lifetime of the device in kids hands. Anyhow, like I said, need more data.

All that this really brought to my attention is that if this does become an issue with the controller tabs breaking easily the only way I can think of for it to be remedied is for Nintendo to do a small hardware revision in the future since you can't buy a case to put on it at all times like I can my 3DS and other handhelds. At least not conveniently I don't think. Maybe someone could make a case that would encompass the entire handheld Switch that has slots for the controllers to slide out of? Even though that would look silly with the joycons unattached. EDIT: This would also make docking the thing a pain so maybe not a good idea lol.

It just shows The Switch isn't for kids. Kids are gonna drop this like crazy.

I think I've only seen my 7-year old and my 4-year old drop a 3DS once in their many hours of use, which includes several plane trips, car rides, play at home, and all kinds of other situations. I'm not worried about how they'll handle the Switch.

I mean, that could very well be true, but I have kids as well and it's hard to believe you keep your eyes on them every time they play for the entire time... Or that they tell you every time they drop them. It probably isn't a big enough deal to them to say anything because it didn't ever break. Those things are built pretty well. Even better if you have case protectors on them. Also, not all kids are the same. Your kids might have great mannerisms but let me tell you from someone who works with them, not all do.

Or how about don't drop your Switch cuz it's not durable.

We really don't know enough to know this yet though.

I mean, I've seen freak accidents happen like Lumia Phones that shatter the first time dropped... Ok, Ok, something more believable, first iterations of hardware are almost always the roughest. I mean, even things that you would think would be impossible to look over can be missed. I seem to remember a certain console wobbling or something...

How is making fun of journalists doing stupid stuff "petty" ?
I mean, I'm talking about the guys who ate a cartidrige because why not.

M8 you seem petty as fuck, your hate for GB is amazing. Do you identify yourself as a Zelda fan or a Nintendo fan cause what an annoying erspn you are and PETTY as fuck.

Not an issue for me if/when I get a Switch since it'll never leave my entertainment center, but I am curious to see how it holds up for those who constantly remove & reattach the joy cons and with bag jostle etc..

I posted earlier about how often my nephew drops my Wii U gamepad. Kids are just careless and things happen. Even without this thing with GB happening, I would have been extra cautious with the switch cause unlike the gamepad, it's an entire console with detachable components. Not surprised if it's not as durable as people expected.

This was the straw that broke the camels back for me. I already wasn't sure about keeping my pre-order so seeing this and that the system is super bare-bones at launch convinced me to cancel my preorder.

Put it in the BST thread if you do. Gaffers helping gaffers and all that.

Im actually very afraid of it getting broke.

My game pad surivived but it seemed sturdier and didnt get moved around or left sitting somewhere near as much as this thing will.

I will be extremely careful like its my third child but without even a smartcase like my iPad i fear repairs.

Nintendo's usual durability out the window.

No.

The Switch still worked. Even after being dropped on concrete. That is actually impressive.

But it got some damage.

Drop a Gameboy, and it would probably still work, but a button might pop or the screen might get cracked.

At last people are realizing how shit is Giant Bomb.

Ha! Was gonna post this. lol.
I'm beginning to think that these things are gonna start to malfunction like this over time through normal play. Latches usually do this. Them Joy Conz ain't cheap either so it'll be a huge blow if this becomes a widespread issue.

More like they're joke characters at this stage. See...

I fully stand by what I said. It's a tablet and it won't be as durable as all Nintendo's past handhelds. If you don't like that it is up to you.

Unless its easy to break I don't see this being an issue. I never broke a wiimote or ds or 3ds or 3dsxl during tons of regular use. I imagine the Switch will be the same.

This is a system I can't fathom getting a case for, the fact that I would have to take off the case every time I want to dock it would make the whole experience tedious and defeat the point for me.
