Confirmed - Joycon Latches Will Break If You Break Them (Giant Bomb)

Is that why Jeff was not too hot on Zelda? Because his Switch broke?

I don't get why Jeff is considered 'not too hot' on Zelda given what he's said about Zelda. Seems more like he's positive on the game but he has a few concerns that he's hoping are addressed by the game.

Kind of a shame if the latching mechanism isn't metal, but made of plastic... but I can't imagine the average user will EVER need to worry about this :p

So a lot of people need to eat crow after this.
While it is true that we didn't know is the fall was the cause, everyone was already claiming that the rails didn't work at all.

I dont know. I think most people drop their phone or tablet at some point or another. I think this will be a problem. Its understandable, but will really suck when it happens to us.

I mean most electronics break if you drop them on concrete.
Love ya GB, but this is a non-issue.

They never treated it like an issue. They said that the latches didn't seem to be working very well and they weren't sure if that was a result of it falling on concrete or not, because the reps from Nintendo said the device can take a beating.

People removing things from context and being really reactionary makes things into an issue.

The number of people I still see walking around with shattered phone screens makes me a little less confident that people are careful and responsible with their hardware.

I guess the Switch being too big to carelessly pull in and out of a pocket is a good thing in this case.

That's why they buy cases for that express purpose of protecting their phones and tablets

the tiny plastic tabs on the joycons wore down or snapped and aren't long enough to properly latch into the unit anymore.

the latch mechanism for the controllers seems way too important to be so flimsy. I mean it's the whole point of the console.

That's the thing, they never said it was an issue. It was only some sight concern on UPF. I saw plenty of people up in arms after the fact that was straight up embrassing.

Clearly a downgrade in materials as gameboys were built out of mythril, adamantite, and super alloy-Z back in the day. Thats why they survived bombings.

I keep seeing that they dropped it on concrete, when did this happen?

Jeff said in that same video that he accidentally dropped the Switch on the way into the recording studio right before they started on Friday. Their office floors are all concrete.

Therefor the Switch was dropped onto concrete.

It's not like they did it deliberately, as some people seem to be inferring.

The number of people I see every day with cracked iPhone screens is shocking. People thinking this isn't at least somewhat of an issue are delusional. Of course, that doesn't mean that the system is garbage or defective, but rather it has a weakpoint. Most systems do.

At least the plastic clips that broke were on the joy-con side. Wonder how long these plastic clips will last under normal wear and tear.

I don;t care too much if the build quality is not so hot, but for those saying ehh I am going to wait and see -seems doubtful... there seems to be so much smoke here that somewhere there is a fire. The Switch is clouded in smoke. So either everyone wants it to die and hates Nintendo..or it actually does have issues.

I doubt my switch will ever leave my house so IDC. If I was a mainly mobile gamer.. it would be a thing.

Good to have some idea of the fragility of the unit. Shit is expensive and I'd like to see some actual durability tests given its relatively younger target audience.

Which I am doing, not sure that will protect the joycons. If you have to disconnect the joy cons to put it in the case (something I didnt even consider when I ordered mine) then I can see a lot of people not bothering for a quick car trip or something. Ultimately its on us, of course, but will suck.

My case is a travel case, not protective armor for dropping while playing. Does that exist? It will probably be too bulky if it does.
