The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild **SPOILER FREE** Impression Thread

The big problem with SS was that EVERYTHING was a dungeon or pre-dungeon (except for the sky, but that had basically nothing in it). It was way too dense, there were no areas for you to just explore, everything had to be a puzzle. They went way too far in that direction with that game, to the point where it didn't feel like you were exploring a real world, but rather just a series of obstacle courses. Maybe BotW goes too far in the opposite direction, we'll see. But even if it does I'm sure I'll prefer it.

Well I really loved that. Better than an empty environment designed to just fill curiosity.

Well, I stumbled into a ton of the story stuff and made a huge amount of progress. Rather than be a dick and drop hints or whatnot it's just time for me to bail from this thread.

All of the impressions I left so far have been just wandering the world - restricted to what was allowed in the media previews - no spoilers. Anything I'd want to talk about from here on out would be borderline or worse, so that's that. I will say that I was just 'unlucky' that my initial wanderings took me to some of the bleaker and emptier spots, I suppose. Not that I didn't enjoy that, I did. But the last couple of hours have been very different. Some people will have very different experiences depending on where they go to start the game.

Well I really loved that. Better than an empty environment designed to just fill curiosity.

I loved SS too. This, however, is the exact opposite - a direct response to SS, and it skirts very close to 'an empty environment designed just to fill curiosity' at times. There's a strong argument to be made that's it's just too big. But that'll be for people to decide themselves.

Anyway, see ya'll in the spoiler thread in about two weeks when we're all done with it. You can PM me if you have any questions.

EDIT: I suppose I should leave my last opinion:
This game is so much better than I imagined it would be from the reveal trailer. It's flawed, but its brilliance more than makes up for that to me. A strong GotY contender and for many people this will be the definitive Zelda game. For a smaller group I think it'll be very controversial. Zelda games always are.

Gah sorry don't even know where to ask this but:

1) Are joy-cons the default Switch controllers?
2) Which one is BOTW made for? Pro or Joy?

Depends completely on your preference. You can use any of the provided controllers for BotW.

You'll obviously have to use both Joycons rather than use one in the SNES orientation like you can in some multiplayer games.

Skyward Sword did this masterfully, but apparently a lot of players didn't like that. They wanted a vast open world that exists first and foremost for sightseeing purposes. Sounds like Nintendo is primarily catering to them with BotW. I personally preferred the SkyS approach, but it seems I was in a minority here. I have no doubt that there'll be a lot of activities in BotW's overworld, but it certainly won't have the same gameplay density SkyS had. That game may forever remain uncontested in this regard (- as far as Zelda goes).

The density of design was one of Skyward's greatest aspects.

See I want to hear "it's greatest game ever made", is it that or not? :P

Speaking of Skyward Sword, I feel like I hit a brick wall. I got to the final (or second to last?) boss, and not only did I not bother with Boss Rush Mode to get the Hylian Shield, but it's ALL sword fighting and I've tried so many times, even watched YouTube videos, I don't think I'll ever be able to beat him, let alone the actual final boss. I can get through the first phase without taking a hit (I have 16 hearts) but as soon as we get on the ground and it becomes a sword fight I'm toast. I don't know if I'm just moving the controller wrong or if my timing is off, I can't get any good hits in it seems. I get in close and use my shield to bounce his jabs back and try to swing when he's off balance but eventually I have to retreat to let my shield regenerate and it feels like no matter how many times I hit him he never seems to take damage so I'm just floundering until I lose all my hearts and die.

Anyone have any tips? And I imagine the boss AFTER this boss is only gonna be even harder. I've really enjoyed the game up until this part (well, I actually fucking HATE the Imprisoned fights) and it's gonna really bum me out if I can't beat it and see the end of the story without resorting to YouTube ):

Trying to remember but I haven't played this game since launch. I think the fight you're at is all about rhythm, isn't it? And about very precise directional swings of the wiimote? I will say he is more difficult than the final boss. That's for sure. Keep watching YouTube videos. You'll get it eventually.

My tip for the final boss: you've been using the skyward strike all this time, why stop now? ;)

I'm starting to wonder about enemy variety, though. Seemed really high at first, but now I'm thinking maybe every region has the same set of enemies, recoloured or tweaked. Would be a bit disappointing if true.

In his video, HMK stated that there is a TON of enemy variety and he's been playing the game for well over 20 hours, so there's that :)

Lol atleast i am getting my Zelda amiibos 1 day early....

Just got a mail with order send was excited, oh it's the amiibo's xd.

I've just got the game. Wii U version was already available. Perhaps should've waited for the Switch version, but must... play... Zelda...
Well, actually it's sensible to get the Switch later for more software and eventual kinks being worked out. I can double dip later if necessary.

First impression: Yes, it still has this IMO inferior alternate European cover image. But who cares. Unfortunately I'm not a very fast gamer, so I probably won't be able to share any worthwhile impressions or leave the plateau in time before there are enough others.

Take lots of breaks. I remember my performance getting worse as I grew more tired. And maybe take some health potions into the battles.

If that doesn't work, you might have to get that hylian shield or give up.

Man this thread is slow. Is everyone in the preview or spoiler thread. That preview thread has so many gifs and spoilers of later areas that it might as well be a spoiler thread.

I'm sorry if this has already been asked/talked about however being that I am at work I have only a limited amount of time to read this thread.

Haha.

Is it possible to have the North American version of the game use a language other than English as the spoken language?

I only ask because I've read some people comment on the fact that the voice acting isn't the greatest. Thought this could be a way to avoid it. Although, I don't think it will ruin my experience with the game regardless.

Just two more days...

Thanks for the pointers. I watched another YouTube video that actually made it appear suuuper easy but I know the execution is way different from just watching (and I'm sure the two-handed sword part will drive me absolutely insane since if you hit it the wrong way he regenerates it).

I'm gonna return to Skyloft to get all 5 of my bottles for Fairies and Potions, and the two(?) Heart Medals too. I don't expect to need things like the expansion bags for Bombs or Slingshot ammo for either final boss so I should be good with 5 bottles, 2 medals, and the Quiver. Just gotta be patient and take my time, make sure I'm making proper slashes and letting my shield regenerate.

Yes, but it'll also change all of the text as well.

I had this problem the whole way through, and had to just give up eventually. I think it's my fault for "using" the wiimote in a weird way, but I couldn't figure out what I was doing wrong or how I was handling it improperly. Still makes me sad whenever I think about it :(

Does anyone know how amazon ships pre orders?
Should I expect monday or friday to get BotW?

Expect Friday if it says that, unless you like tampered with it recently. Sometimes that just makes shit hit the fan.

But yea, my last pre-orders were FFXV and Gravity Rush 2. They didn't ship until the evening for me.

Some stores have broken street day and sold the Wii U version early. I'm hoping that's how the people in this thread are playing.
True for me. When I was at the retailer, the Wii U version was already there, and the Amiibos. Notthing Switch related yet, though, except some decoration.

Curious, when you shoot an arrow through fire, does the fire affect it?

I know you can light regular arrows on fire by sticking them into flames when drawing your bow, they showed that at E3

haven't seen an arrow fly through fire, wouldn't surprise me if they did catch on fire, since this game apparently thinks of everything

Yea I wouldn't be surprised either lol

Damn, I love that I'll be able to go into the game and test all sorts of random shit

Funny you should ask that now, they just demonstrated that exact thing at the GDC panel.

So yes, it does.

That's exactly why I asked lmao

Or to be more precise, I had wanted to ask this, but I had forgotten until the video reminded me lol

That's good. It would be pretty silly if the N64 games had one up on BotW.

There is one thing I'm not sure BotW has though, compared to the N64 games, and that is fishing. I don't mean using a spear or bomb, I mean actual fishing.

It's not a huge deal if it isn't in, but it would be missed.
