I love Alien. I was so hyped for Prometheus (which was simultaneously not good and not nearly as bad as people claim it to be).
I think I've come to the position that I just don't care too much about the Alien world.
Let me clarify. Alien, as a movie, was wonderful because it was a perfectly executed Jaws in space movie (Jaws being one of my favorite movies all time). The movie was horrifying. It played perfectly to a base fear of being in an enclosed space accidentally surrounded by a merciless killing machine that seems indestructible. It was also gross, ugly, etc. Everything about it was just terrifying from the facehugger to the burst to the growth to the final form.
The characters were also good. They weren't dumb. They acted like how non-military people would generally act. Ripley didn't survive because she was some amazingly smart/strong person but because of a combination of good survival use and luck. Everyone could believe they could have been Ripley in that situation. There was also good use of social commentary (like corporate greed).
Now, it seemed like I wanted to learn more about the Alien and the ship and the weapon like thing and the entity that also had its chest burst, etc. I mean, our natural inclination is to want to learn more about why what happened happened. But in reality, the fact that we know almost nothing about the Alien makes is scarier and the movie work better.
I've now realized I shouldn't care about the Aliens or now the Engineers or anything. It seems like whatever someone comes up with doesn't add anything to the story, in the end, for me.
I think Ridley trying to recreate the magic of the first is a mistake (not saying he is doing that here). It just can't be done. It was done and that's that. Cameron's sequel (which I also really liked) worked solely because he changed the genre in many ways.
Alien: Covenant might turn out okay. I might see it if the reviews tend to be positive. But I learned a lot from Prometheus and the hype I had towards it. And I realize that the backstory doesn't really do anything for me. I hope I'm wrong. I hope Ridley finds a new way to tell this story but i have my doubts.
BTW, to make it clear, this is only my viewpoint and my specific reaction. Because I've concluded I don't care about the background doesn't mean you should come to the same conclusion. This is a personal thing for me.
