You have to actually look at the exchange. He was never asked about his involvement in any capacity, only asked what he would do about those discovered to have had ties. He then went to very plainly volunteer that he had no contact with the Russians.

The defense at the moment was that when Sessions met with the Russian Ambassador he had already taken off his hood and robe and so couldn't be considered to be affiliated with the Trump campaign during said meetings.
