WP: Sessions Met with Russia Twice Last Year, Didn't Disclose During Confirmation

Not open for further replies.
So here's a roundup of statements made so far on this:

* He doesn't recall the topic of the conversation (from the original interview with WaPo)
* He only discussed the election "superficially" (from the White House background statement)
* He met with the Russian ambassador as part of his Senate duties (from his press secretary)
* He didn't meet with the Russians about the election (from Sessions's new statement)

Looking good, guys! Very consistent!
People really need to pay attention to the mincing of words here. He was never asked about himself talking to the Russians or what anybody was talking to Russia about. All this talk of whether it was for Trump or the Senate committee is immaterial to the question asked and his testimony.

Were there any links between Sessions and Russia before today? At this rate, we'll soon learn that Linda McMahon and Betsy DeVos play Bridge with Putin.

Sessions will be a bit more difficult to deal with than Flynn, but lets hope it does come to that.
Flynn went out easy because his resignation was being brokered as part of a power play from Pence and Priebus to remove a key piece of Trump's inner circle. Sessions doesn't have that wrinkle so I don't suspect he'll go nearly as quietly.

Not to mention Miller will go to bat for him.

Just curious anyone knows how Trump supporters responded?
Usually they just parrot whatever the official response is, but they must be pretty confused this time with 4 different responses to parrot.

GENERAL sessions? are they just editing panicky flynn reactions from the last russian scandal?

"General" is, weirdly enough, an appropriate form of address for the Attorney General. It's not quite archaic and not altogether common ("Mr./Ms. Attorney General" is more prominent), but it's not wrong, and this isn't anything nefarious.

When we hosted Eric Holder at an event, my (lawyer) boss referred to him as "General Holder." It's mostly in-speak for lawyers, though.

What do you think would have happened if Obama went after the opposition party's candidate for president?

Literally don't care. Like, a single bit.

Fuck party politics. Obama did not do his job as Commander in Chief by not moving on this.

Like, the only thing that is potentially saving us right now is the overwhelming incompetence of the Trump administration and everyone in its orbit. Had we elected a halfway competent fascist...heaven help me at the thought. It's outrageous, and Obama's legacy will wear this when history looks back on this shameful moment in our country's history.

Nah. I disagree. If he did then explain the leaks then, there's a strategy at play. Maybe Comey is doing his job. It isn't his fault that Hillary didn't bring it home.

Fuck the election. Ain't talking about that. There were two whole months between the election and Obama leaving office.

Obama dropped the ball on every part of this.

Every. Single. Part.
Literally nothing he could do here. If he went after the other party's candidate he would have been accused of election meddling. That would have been the new story.

From what I know Obama surrounded himself with bright and thoughtful people. I'm sure these discussions were had.

politicians from weak districts. looking for a save.

Nah. I would be shocked. Absolutely shocked

At most he won't get to be AG and everyone will say that's punishment enough. I bet every Gaf member 1 million dollars.

in Trump dollars, so you know I'm good for it

What do you think would have happened if Obama went after the opposition party's candidate for president?

The relevant question is actually "would it have been better or worse than what's going to happen in the near future?"

We can't answer that yet.

TONIGHT TRUMP BECAME THE PRESIDENT. PERIOD!

HE'LL HAVE 8 YEARS

WHAT HE DID UP THERE WAS THE MOST EXTRAORDINARY THING WE'VE SEEN IN POLITICS.

These are actual quotes.

Are you fucking serious?

I wouldn't be too surprised, only watched an episode or two of his current CNN show and I could barely last through it if not for the guests. Guy has plenty of heart, but his brain seemed far behind.

Like, the only thing that is potentially saving us right now is the overwhelming incompetence of the Trump administration and everyone in its orbit. Had we elected a halfway competent racist...heaven help me at the thought. It's outrageous, and Obama's legacy will wear this when history looks back on this shameful moment in our country's history.

How can you not care? That's incredibly short sighted.

Imagine a world where Comey doesn't send the letter. Imagine a world where Hillary would have won. To look back at this and say it's simple is pretty ridiculous.

Obama dropped the ball on every part of this.

Every. Single. Part.
I don't agree with this in the slightest. He has layed the foundation beautifully for this to be pursued post election where it can have its biggest audience. Also please don't forget the hugely important order to loosen restrictions on information sharing between the IC.

Here are 2 high ranking officals directly tied to Russia, in a sane world the whole adminstration would be thrown out. At this point there is no smoke there is grease fire that has trump throwing water on it

that is not party politics that is an unprecedented action that could create a democratic snd constitutional crisis. he gave it to the ic and comey fucked him.

This, plus the most recent round of Russia sanctions. And who knows what else. This feels like some Obama 4D chess -- which means it impresses us, but may not actually have any tangible, real world effect.

Commander in chief? What on earth are you on about?

What choice did Comey had? Have you seen the leaks coming out the NY outpost of the FBI? Let's be realistic about it, the letter was the least damaging move for her, next time don't associate with fucking unforced error machine Anthony Weiner if you want to be POTUS.

WH statement and Sessions statement are not in sync lol they are panicking

They are so fucking bad at this.

How hard is it to have a fucking conference call and get your strategy and responses in sync?

How are they so incompetent.

Do you know what commander-in-Chief actually means?

If Obama has absolutely anything to do with the staggering amount of leaks from this admin then we certainly have tangible effect. This is basically the only reason people were able to force Flynn out.

This is some nonsensical ill-informed spin here.

Being upset at Obama first requires we know that his administration had sufficiently verified and in depth info and sat on it, but that doesn't appear to be the case. Recent reports indicate the full scope of Russia's involvement wasn't clear until very late. I certainly wouldn't expect a sitting President to accuse the opposing party's candidate of treason based on incomplete and inconclusive intelligence at the 11th hour of an election.

I just don't understand how these corrupt old bastards thought they could get away with crap like this. Stuff like this will eventually come to light as history has shown. The fact that it's happening so soon means it wasn't that difficult to do.

It wouldn't have made a difference. Everybody knew about Russia months before the election and nobody gave a shit.

No, everyone didn't know, and our media is responsible for that.

When Hillary Clinton dropped that bomb during the debate, the next day, that should have been EVERYONE'S headline. Trump took a huge shit on the IC then, and did it regarding a country that's notoriously unfriendly to American interests.

Instead, they buried that story. Nobody talked about it unless it was right wing talking heads calling it nonsense. They sure jumped on anything related to Hillary Clinton's emails, tho!

It's funny to see people being disturbed about him shitting on the IC now. He did it as a candidate. And if people would have done their fucking jobs THEN, we probably wouldn't be in this mess now. Now, we're playing catch up.

It's a goddamn mess.

Trump got away with so much during his run for presidency that he thought he could just carry that through into his actual presidency.

Even if Sessions resigns his replacement is just as compromised. Dana Boente was brought in to replace Yates when she did her job. Dana Boente was brought in outside of the chain of succession. Interestingly enough it was Obama who specifically removed Boente from the Chain of Succession just a week before he left office.

Dana Boente is tied to the Hacking investigations that revealed Weiners sexting which eventually led to Comeys last minute letter

I'm am not talking about during the election. Whether or not I agree, there are potential arguments to make about Obama not weighing in during the election. I am talking about the months after, when there was mounting evidence of Russian collusion, public opinion was swaying, and Obama still had the power to appoint an independent commission of his own.

Intel SIGNT isn't always clean. You can't move against the president-elect with illegally obtained evidence or with evidence from foreign intel. There seem to be multiple counter intelligence investigation going on against Trump admin (probably trying to get clean sources of the same intel) and intel has been spread through enough parts of the govt that it can't be shut down.

That is an unprecedented action that reflects the unprecedented situation of a foreign country successfully interfering in American politics. And guess what, not directly and effectively addressing it in any way lead to a democratic crisis.

His testimony was that he never had any contact with Russian officials. Seems legit.
