Because he's responding to a question about a CNN report that claims Trump campaign contacts with Russia. He can argue that he was basically saying "I was with the Trump campaign at one point and I didn't have meetings with the Russians about the election".

Depending on how readily available the information about Sessions' meetings were, his openness here could be leveraged to his benefit by saying "well, obviously he thought that was context since why would lie about something so easily checked?"

He's responding to a question about fufilling his duty as AG regarding this matter, not anything about anybody in particular being involved. Cant say enough that his answer had nothing to do with what he was asked.

The best thing about the White House refusing to provide cover up is that they are making it easier and easier for someone to crack and start spilling everything. Flynn and most likely now Sessions will be forced to appear before Congress or more hopefully a special counsel about this. They really are crumbling from within.
