Does the map upgrade as part of the main story or is it possible to miss it? I'm at the part where
I just got the blue tunic from Impa after triggering the first memory
but the only part that's fully visible on the map is still the center area.

As far as I know, only way is to go yourself unlock towers to reveal maps.

Possible early game scenario spoiler:

The guy that's standing outside Kakariko Village with the eerie green eyes is extremely creepy and that whole "Koga Ninja Assassin Squad" that's after Link is fucking bad-ass and well played by Nintendo.

Seriously I love this!

I found a lady crying screaming for salmon by a river...only to then turn around and also ask for my death haha

I don't get how the fuck this Shiekah Sensor works. the thing beeps, i keep walking, it stops beeping, i turn around, it starts beeping, stops, turn back around, beeps fast... wtf

Could be higher and not on the samw level. You can turn it off. I'm going to do that., i want to find it by myself

So is it possible to scan enemies strength?

Hooooooly shit that was hard. Beat the enemy in the coliseum. Broke most of my weapons, and broke my shield but I did it and it was sooooo satisfying. Very difficult when everything was a one hit kill. It was well designed in the end though. Just took me a while to figure out the effective strategy.

Wait, what do you mean? Like the geography of that area isn't filled out for you on the map?

You need to climb towers to reveal the map.

Turn it off from the map screen. Going au naturel is muy bueno.

The faster it beeps, the closer you are to a Shrine and that can be in any direction from your current standing position - whether it's up, down, left or right and no matter how elevated it is from you. It also gets very annoying after a while, thankfully it can be turned off on the map screen lol

I like this game, although I'm definitely less stoked about it than I was expecting. Some thoughts:

-The story is really not gripping at all, although I just got to Sidon's stuff and things are starting to pick up.

-The world just feels a bit... flat and devoid of any real sense of mystery to me so far. Right now exploration boils down to getting up real high and looking for the bright lights. Shrines are puzzles or combat trials. Hopefully I'm just early and things start mixing up a bit, because right now everything I can find already sort of feels like a known quantity. This is a super tough thing to solve in open world game design obviously, but so far I'm a little bit disappointed in just how little exploration has surprised me so far. There's nothing I've discovered yet that feels like it provides insight into the world, story, lore, themes, etc.

-Playing on Wii U, the framerate is truly unacceptable. I can grin and bear it but I don't think the game should have released in this state.

-I don't like the soundtrack. The light piano is nice sometimes, but it often gets irritating. The battle music is a whole new level of annoying though, my god. Free jazz piano mixed with what sounds like an egg timer and a 90s instant messenger notification sound. It sucks.

-The interactivity of the items, powers, physics, and AI is astoundingly good. This is what's keeping me interested right now. I've had so many "woah!" moments noticing the AI do something clever like adjust their chase of me to avoid a bomb after getting hit with them a few times, baiting the enemies into fighting each other, seeing fire completely screw up a camp, etc etc. All the best aspects of MGSV and Far Cry are here - namely the way the game accounts for real world logic and provides satisfying payoffs for asking "would THIS work?"

-The durability and stamina systems work really well not only as a limiter, but as a way to get you to get out of your comfort zone and try different weapons, or really feel like you're scrounging. It's well balanced and enriches the experience.

-The game is way harder than Zelda has been in a long long time, but in a way that encourages you to try something different next time.

-Seriously fuck that battle theme

Obviously I'm gonna stick with it. This post might seem harsher than I mean it; it's an incredibly good game and I'm excited to play more, I just feel a bit disappointed by the world so far.

Yea I'm kind of there to. It doesn't seem to distinguish itself yet in the amazing open world everyone is talking about but I'm still early. My hype levels may have been too high with those reviews.

It does make me want to play more MGSV.

It says I can't use my amiibo again today. It was the smash link amiibo from the first release. Is this an actual 24 hour cycle or game cycle? I summoned a horse and went to a stable to register it but she disappeared and I can't redo the amiibo spawn :(

Spent like three hours today... beat all the first shrines and just got to the stable after three additional shrines.

Then my Wii U touchpad ran out of battery.

This game is just aces up and down outside of it's only glaring flaw... the weird mapping of controls.

Anyone else wish the bloodmoon graphics would stay the whole night or something? Feels real off to me you get everything slowly becoming red, cutscene plays things respawn, annnd it's gone. :/

It told you at the start to climb the Towers to uncover new zones?

I'm enjoying the game but the IQ is absolutely horrendous, but the freedom is great.
Ah, thanks. I forgot that's what triggered the initial map reveal.

I haven't really come across many towers yet. Only other one I've found was surrounded by those guardians that shoot lasers and OHKO you, and died like ten times trying to reach it before I gave up.

"The Blood Moon rises" is the new "Terrible night for a curse".

Please interrupt what I'm doing to show me a cutscene I've seen before to tell me something I already know and throw me into a loading screen for 20 seconds. Thanks!

It actually seems to be based on the direction you're moving in. If you're moving in the direction of the shrine, it will show a "stronger" signal.

Made me laugh thanks, and yeah I don't really like the fact they made a cutscene play every single time.

I'm confused, is the cutscene playing every time for you? I've had three Blood Moons and the cutscenes only played the first time. The music picks up and everything respawns, but there's no cutscene.

Tip: do not just visit the shrines and towers or focus on them, lol

Two questions after just starting the switch version:

1. Is there really no way to turn off the subtitles in cutscenes?

2. Does the pro controller have rumble? I played the opening minutes of the game twice to test out the handheld mode and I noticed rumble in handheld mode I didn't notice on the pro controller.

Got the paraglider earlier today.

The runes are really neat. Love them as an overall mechanic. The game itself? Pure unadulterated adventure.

Question, but will tag just in case.

So the Great Fairy in this game upgrades your armor? In what way, is someone far enough that they can tell me if it's worth using that early on in the game or should I save those upgrades for later on?

ARE YOU ME

I literally share the exact same criticisms as you

Happy to see I'm not the only one who feels this way. Thought I was crazy for a moment.

I can't think of another game that gives you so much freedom. Literally everytime I've asked myself, "I wonder if you can do THIS," it turns out you can.

I'm totally enthralled.

Wii U version if it matters, also I think the cutscene dialogue is a bit different too with Zelda saying the blood moon rises "again."

I just did that with
Flint. Lighting shit on fire in creative ways is really fun lol.

Defense food lvl 3 is by far the most useful food. It's the difference between taking 4 hearts of damage down to 1 quarter or so in a world boss battle, letting you hack away its legs with impunity. Very op.

Headed north of Hateno village to Lanayru Mountain. Had one of my favourites experiences yet with the game
Climbed to the top of the mountain and found a dragon being held down by spooky purple magic. I thought I had stumbled across SUPER late game stuff or a boss but felt like continuing anyways. I won't spoil what happens next but it was really cool to go through all of that JUST for a shrine.

Also I'm stuck on my first Shrine, glad to see they have a few stumpers! It's one where you push a circular set of handles (Kinda like Great Bay Temple from MM) to activate a laser that raises water. Trying to figure out how to get the bonus chest at the end!

In the second room of dark tuss shrine please lend assistance if you've completed this shrine.

I literally just looked up what to do in that room
Just drop the bowl ontop of the orange cube and it will go down and open the top of the gate thing

Are you only able to fast travel to Towers or is there a way to travel to other locations?

Towers and Shrines. Just activate them and they become a fast travel point on the map (don't need to complete the shrines, just open their door).

How does +defense and +attack actually work behind the scenes? I got a sword that was 8 in attack power but had +3 attack, not sure if it was supposed to be good or bad.

Got a bit frustrated with the part where you need to collect 20 shock arrows (trying to be vague as possible here...). I ended up stealthing it rather than tackling it head on... as it were, because I was dying a lot.
