Am I the only one who thinks the world itself is kind of underwhelming? Why is it getting so much praise? "Better than Witcher 3"? Terrain is mostly bland and empty. Exploration is not very rewarding outside of shrines and Koroks. Only 8 hours in and I'm already tired of raiding Bokoblin camps for shitty items. The world just doesn't feel very fleshed out at all. Why did it have to be this big? Relevant locations are sparse, environments are repetitive. The perplexing lack of music doesn't help either.

Talking strictly about the world, gameplay is great.

You're definitely in the minority, that's for sure. Genuinely don't know how someone could say this world is underwhelming...

How do you throw shields?

I don't think you can? I just drop them.

For me, the gameplay and the world are kind of interlinked. Its about the versatility of moving through that world. In most open world RPG-likes, your character is, for the most part, tethered to the ground. Shitty items doesn't really mean much in this game either, given the nature of the durability system. You always need new stuff!

You're definitely in the minority, that's for sure.

If the durability is warning you, you can just repeatedly shield surf until it breaks too. Not as quick as throwing but eh.

I'm not a fan of open world games at all. But what exactly does the Witcher have that BOTW doesn't in terms of world design?

Actually interesting, unique locations and good sidequests with stories push you forward. The world is just so much more dense and convincing, it's not even remotely close.

Chrono Trigger came out what in 1995? This is the first time since that I'm wondering if it's still my favorite game.

It's not yet. But still.

I'm trying to climb the
Akkala Citadel Ruins
Tower (north of
Zora's
Domain) but it's covered in the black/pink darkness goop. I've done laps and laps around the tower to find a way above it to climb, but no luck. Is there a way to get rid of the Darkness goop?

I went back to the GP because I had the nagging feeling I had missed some stuff even after spending 8 hours there and yup, I found more hiddden stuff HOW IS THIS POSSIBLE

I've put in about twenty or so hours and keep finding interesting stuff. It's hard sticking to one of the main paths without getting distracted a zillion times on the way.

50+ hours in with more than half the shrines done and I stumbled upon both a brand new village AND a massive unique boss out in the overworld just now. The boss (
Molduga
) was really, really cool. One of the best in the game, and definitely the most unique.

The game is just stuffed with content, it's amazing.

However, having played that much in the course of 5 days, I can feel that the wonder has gone now. I understand the systems, I understand the world. I know the map, pretty much. I've beaten the story. I'm basically scouring the map for things to do now, whereas at first every single direction held limitless new possibilities, sights and sounds.

Basically, every extra hour I put into this takes me further away from the awe and joy I felt at the start of the game, and as such I really think it'll be better to just put it down for a long while now. I always do this with open world games - love them so much I play them for too long, then I end up remembering the rote gameplay of the last ten hours or so that made me quit rather than the 20-30 hours of joy preceding it. I don't want to make that mistake here. Other Zelda games had a defined ending after which you could emotionally process everything, that's really not the case here. Or, I suppose the game does have an ending, but I saw it 20 hours ago and it didn't make me feel much.

Also, I achieved the crowing moment of my combat experience as link: Defeating a silver
Lynel
in the Colosseum without being hit once. Now THAT was a good show. Went through 6 good weapons beating him. Great rewards afterwards, too. Seems like a good place to stop. Also to progress the things I want to progress I need 14,000 rupees and I only have 300, lol. So yeah. Good place to stop.

give us your final thought on this game Griss :P

Same. But with FF7. I'm about 20 hours in and I have only really been in two zones and I'm thinking this could top it. Truly an amazing game so far

Yeah that's what I thought. I was just surprised at the comment in that guide about throwing rusty shields.

Holy shit at the (location spoiler)
Lomei Labrynth Island.

Had an absolute BLAST plotting where I've been and checking the map to traverse the maze while trying to keep my head down because of the Guardians that are flying above, then the curveball it throws after you get the shrine reward in the room below LOL. Nearly peed my pants after grabbing the treasure and all the Guardian loot.

Easily my favorite shrine so far.

Is the only way to fend off the extreme heat of death mountain from potions and frozen food? I'd love to find something to wear to ward off the heat instead if I can. Thanks! <3

Yeah, I just finished that an hour ago. It's so cool. The diversity in this game is astounding.

I can't believe how much I've played this game

and how little I've seen of the world

it's not even overwhelming, I'm just taking it all in

No, I'm definitely with you. I'm still enjoying the game, but I find the world far too big, and I think it'd benefit from being more dense.

I'm also probably in the minority in that I like very few open world games -- The Witcher 3 is one of them, as it actually takes a narrative approach to an open world by filling it with lots of interesting stories to uncover. Gameplay-focused ones like Zelda are always fun for a while, but I tend to get tired of them after a bit, as you end up doing the same things over and over.

Environmental storytelling is the big one. Written content everywhere is the other. Those are major things. As well as a totally different level of graphical fidelity, which is important when 'seeing the sights' is a major pleasure of these kinds of games.

The point is that Witcher 3 is a narrative game, whereas Zelda is a gameplay focused game. But BotW is absolutely hopeless at the things Witcher 3 is good at and vice versa.

Actually interesting, unique locations and good sidequests with stories push you forward. The world is just so much more dense and convincing, it's not even remotely close.
I'm gonna have to give the Witcher another go. It seems interesting but I could never get into it.

It's too early to tell. But after two very long sessions I have yet to repeat my actions. The world is actually filled with interesting mechanics and puzzles. We'll see how long that holds though.

You guys are making me jealous. My Switch arrives later today and I'm picking up my copy of Zelda from Argos, but then I'm going to a comedy club tonight. Monday will be my first real time with this game and I cannot friggin wait! Watched a tiny bit of Angry Joe live streaming it and I can just tell it's going to be special. I'm honestly most looking forward to the fact that I can play it in bed, and this game seems like the PERFECT game to play in bed. So much easier to spend hours with this game thanks to the portability.

You have to climb some of the crumbling structures around it. Eventually you'll get to a little broken arch thing that's half covered in goop but it's still climbable. Then jump and glide to the tower.

So I discovered that island where
you get stripped of all your stuff and you have to get the 3 balls in the altars.....how the hell do you avoid getting struck by lightning when it starts to storm?

I already tried witcher 3 for 3 times
The longest one is 20hrs and I already bored to death and quit
I don't like the character movements
I don't like the combat
I don't like the way they use witcher scense cause I found I just need the mini map to find those red hint and I dont care about the environment

I tend to play games very slowly, over yesterday and today I've been dicking around in little bursts and I just finally got the paraglider after probably ~5 hours overall.

I'm totally in love of course, could wander and climb for days

I got to the frozen shrine just eating peppers continually because I hadn't yet seen the diary with the hints about getting the warm doublet lol
