From what I understand, he's producing the film, or his name is on the film as producer, and he helped gather the talent, but the talent is being more or less left alone to do what they want with it.

Villenueve seems to be pushing back against Ridley's notion that Deckard is 100% a replicant, for example.

That seems convoluted and inelegant. So much simpler to say the company simply has a standing secret policy for ships to investigate anything of interest they may pass near, with a particular interest towards retrieving alien specimens that can be exploited for scientific and financial uses.

You don't think the Engineers experimented with the black goo, just like David's doing in Covenant? I'm sure the Engineers were aware that a being like the xenomorph could be created through a certain process, a process David stumbles upon.

I find it strange how people don't want anything explained and everything explained at the same time. It makes no sense to me, especially when it's stupid little thing like a mural in a single scene.
 
This means the whole mythos and conjunction with the Predator is destroyed. The Aliens vs Predator movie features the Alien a few thousand years ago(its a terrible movie and wouldn't be bad if it was retconned but the concept was good, they have acid neutralising blood for instance). That skull in Predator 2 cant have been there. Theres tons of novels and crossovers between these species. This means there cant be any more crossover between them anymore.

And I dont understand why even David would design the Alien on his own volition. And even in the design process he's going to need a steady supply of humans. He's not getting commands from the company is he?

I just wonder how Fox signed off on this. I'm sure it'll do well but this is cannon now. It ruins all kinds of potential and relegates the Alien into a dull corner it cant get out of.

AvP is no shared universe. Its just a Crossover. And the Skull is just a easter egg. And the novels and comics were never canon.

Trivialize it all you want but if David supposedly created the xenomorphs that already exist in a cave carving then it's not a 'stupid little thing'.

Yeah, I feel like some people also misconstrue David's actions with the goo as random and his results as being accidental vs him possibly parsing instructions from what he could read from the Engineers. The Engineers knew about the Deacon going by the mural.

I'm positive that it's a Deacon. Here's a different angle w/ full body on the piece. The Deacon (1) (2). That's not what Kane's son looked like. That doesn't look like the headbutting Xeno in the Covenant trailer. I'm looking at the mural page on in the Prometheus art book right now and the book itself refers to the creature as, "pointy headed Giger-esque," and production designer Arthur Max says, "That's the DNA homage to the Alien Giger creature." It's not the beast.

I understand how people might not have picked up on it if they don't have sustained interest in the movie. I felt like it was once a pedantic thing to stress until concerns about (this particular, heh) continuity came up.

Yeah, ok thanks looks like it could be a deacon. THEN WHO WAS PHONE? What I'm wanting to know now is what purpose did the engineers have for the Deacon?
 
Basically, there's no way the frieze makes sense even if it was a deacon, because the deacon only exists due to an man infected by a minute amount of goo, fucking a woman, thus planting a squid in her, which bodyhugs an engineer.

Which I bet was not the inspiration for that frieze.

And whatever article I thought I remembered about it being the regular Warrior Alien was obviously misremembered by me, apologies for spreading bullshit, Garcia, and thanks for the correction.

I do wonder if that's coming back. I don't know how he's going to shoehorn a Queen in there, especially since a Queen seems to suggest an (unknown) origin for this species that Ridley doesn't appear to subscribe to.

But I'd love for victims getting turned into an egg to make an appearance again. But then again, wants in this film series have a way of becoming all the things you were hoping for in the worst possible way.

David has messed with the black goo. It now can mutate a human into an egg that hatches a queen. His perfect creation can secrete this new black goo so they can procreate when introduced into a new environment.
 
I'm wondering if David's involvement with
creating the xenomorphs isn't the whole story. If the frieze actually was indicative of the xenomorph existing before Prometheus (I realize this is a big if), then David may not be trying to invent them. He might instead being trying to replicate or resurrect them. In the Verge preview, he mentions looking for a final puzzle piece, like he's trying to figure out something. Maybe wasn't sure how they were intitially created and was trying to figure it out with his experiments.

This explanation would also still keep a sense of mystery to the origin of the xenomorph. Or maybe I'm reading too much into things.

Humans turning into facehugger eggs will always be embarrassingly lame to me. Moreso than Prometheus.

Last time this conversation came up a poster here went from 0-to-apeshit on me for suggesting it. So having Heyman snicker at me is all good in comparison, heh.
 
Yeah, it was cut out of ALIEN. Both Brett and Dallas are taken into a makeshift nest that Ripley finds on the ship while she's trying to escape. The filmmakers didn't quite know where to put it without slowing the finale of the film down, so they cut it.

Brett and Dallas were being cocooned, but instead of being held in place for eggs to eject facehuggers, they were literally being mutated into eggs themselves. The original lifecycle apparently had xenomorphs grabbing people, doing... something to them, which would cause their bodies to mutate into eggs/facehuggers.

You're alive while this happens, too.

I like it better when the story was more like
The 'Gods' want to kill us because we are deemed too destructive
. Of course, that was back before Prometheus became what it is now.
 
I've always liked the idea of the Xenomorphs being a product of nature, the result of evolution on a planet so hostile that the Xenomorphs are the way they are because they have to be. And may not even necessarily be top of the food chain.

The problem is that Xenomorph are biomechanical. They have mechanical parts, meaning that, atleast, their species has been altered somehow.
Thing is that I would rather that being done by the Engineers than friggin Fassbender lol

What? Theres nothing physically mechanical about them. They have an exoskeleton and a peculiar look which helps them to blend into our mechanised environment somewhat.

But that doesnt mean it requires someone to have engineered them to specifically attack us.

I always assume the biomech makeup of the aliens was just representative of their truly alien nature. What is "biological" for their species may seem mechanical/created to us. I never thought it needed explaining.
 
I've honestly never thought twice (or once) about the tubes on the Alien.

I just took it at face value. Considering it's a fuckin alien and all.

That's not a bad thing at all. It's a fascinating design, and the fact that we're getting movies about the Xeno's origins means others were giving it more thought as well.

I mean, imagine being the concept artists for Prometheus and Covenant. Being able to look at the Xenomorph as a base and create variations of it to showcase an evolution takes serious thinking.

No they don't, they just look that way because Giger's design does, it looks a lot like exposed muscle and organs. It makes them look simultaneously horrific and 'efficient'.

How would they possibly be mechanical when they come from an egg? You think chestbursters run off and start welding pipes to themselves?
 
It looks like the trailer basically reveals that it will be the pilot and the main actress who end up being the last survivors. At least that's my assumption based on the mid-air battle.

I always saw biomechanical in this case as being something part mechanical that can grow organically to the point where the boundaries between those two things are largely meaningless. The androids are like that in a way: they're fleshy constructs with artificial blood pumping through them. Only in their case they're not grown because humans haven't mastered that technology yet.
