I also want a real damn Zora water temple and water gameplay with unlimited swim stamina/underwater swimming. The waterfall feature of the tunic is boring.

I have an irrational fear of water in video games so I'm fine with how this was handled lol.

Maybe water traversal underwater wasn't implemented because swimming anywhere you want underwater doesn't have the same impact as climbing and navigating through land? You don't have the effects of gravity and paragliding, or the sense of escalation? Of course, there can be design around that, but I can see why maybe that was skipped upon for now.

Without seeking to diminish anyone's opinion... why in Christ's name would ANYONE be surprised that Jim Stirling of all people would be more critical of a Nintendo game than most?

Cool, finally a review that gives a number of people what they want.

Maybe now people will shut up about reviewers being paid off and a bunch of "wow I don't get all these 10s" rhetoric and we can all just go back to enjoying this really fucking amazing game.
I don't particularly trust Jim's stance on open world games after he said MGSV was densely packed but not padded with filler content but I can see some of his grievances here.

Honestly I wonder if he lowered his score because of the wave of 10/10s since he got the game at launch. Had Jim had the game before launch and his review had launched with everyone elses perhaps his opinion wouldn't have been influenced by the people calling this the greatest game ever. His major complaints I can't disagree with on paper even if I think he's off the mark on all of them in terms of their impact on the game.

I wanted to see his negatives. But his server is down for me from all the clicks. I guess that was what he was going for.

salty reactions like mine, I mean

He also gave that trash heap FFXV an 8, so there's that. Although not quite as bad as the glowing reviews of some 9/10 reviews from some gaffers.

Quite late, but Jim Sterling has his review now up

7/10

This line in itself is all my problems with the game despite how good it is

Rather than fully mimic the Dark Souls combat it half-heartedly aims for, Breath simply pumps up the monsters’ ability to do damage, resulting in a lot of one-hit kills even once Link finds and upgrades some decent armor or puts a lot of shrinework into gaining heart containers. It’s a cheap and dirty way of making any game more “challenging” and I can’t say I find it particularly edifying.

The other major point of contention holding back combat is – and you know I have to say it – weapon durability.

It’s hardly surprising the people of Hyrule can’t definitively put Ganon away since we’ve now learned their swords are made out of glass and wishes. Weapons break in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. They break a LOT, to the point where it starts looking absolutely pathetic, to the point where you wonder why every blacksmith in the world hasn’t been fired or thrown in jail for gross incompetence.

This game, man. The more I play, the more I come to realize it is a reimagining of the NES Legend of Zelda.

I don't know how to beat the second part of the fire Titan boss. :-/

I actually got stuck there too, after a while of running around, the game actually gave me a hint to observe the boss. But still I didn't get it. I'd say they didn't make it obvious enough.

Look at the
vacuum
motion.

there it goes the metacritic average.
I must say, I agree with very little of what he said in his review, but it's his opinions so, who cares.

I like Jim Sterling a lot, but his opinion pieces and actions in the gaming community are what he does best. I dont like much his reviews, but its probably because his taste in what makes a game great differ sometimes A LOT from mine, and thats cool.
Thought he was going to put an 8 to the game though, so really surprised he went so harshly and gave it a 7. Its not going to change mi opinion of the game, same way the he thinks The Witcher 3 is an 8.5 game and I consider it a masterpiece, and the same way he gave a 9.5 to Fallout 4 and I consider it a piece of monumental crap.

Its true it gives the game detractors more ammunition to think they are right, that type of people who never touched the game and put a zero in the metacritic user reviews, and ironically enough, the type of people that hate most Jim Sterling, but of course now they are going to defend this.
Just hope actually that 7 comes from the heart if he feels like it and not just becuase the rest of the things surrounding nintendo he doesnt like (and IMO have to be criticised harshly) and wanted to stir a little bit the pot.

That doesn't work. The guy in the off tells me to use my bombs. I still don't get it. The bombs won't get high enough.

He starts an attack where he pulls things in around him. Throw a bomb and detonate when it gets sucked close to him.

Gothalion always kills silver lynels with extreme style. Any videos of really good Silver lynel kills?

Currently watching Goth trying to reach space using a boulder and octorok balloons. Such a fun streamer to watch.

That was the goal,yes

From a gameplay standpoint, that would've made sense on it's own. But I wasn't expecting the warped trees in the Lost Woods, the merchant from the NES Zelda game making an appearance. More direct connections to that particular game & Zelda II, to a lesser extent.

I wouldn't be shocked if there is a wooden sword & shield (that has a holy cross) hidden somewhere in the game.

The weapon durability system is one of my main complaints too. It's not enough for me to take off 3 points if I were to give it a score but still worth complaining about.

The stamina system I actually like. When I was finally able to climb mountains with ease thanks to having enough stamina upgrades it felt like an accomplishment. That's good design. It was rewarding.

While this is fun it really sounds like he is criticizing the game for not being realistic enough :P

I didn't want to copy the whole thing but he furthers to go on saying getting a cool weapon that you inevitably are going to break isn't a reward. I would rather find rupees at that point to buy stuff.

Overall after doing over 70 shrines, weapon chests are a slap in the face. They feel absolutely worthless when I can just get the elemental arrows I need to get to do the effects I want. Which brings another point, I use my bow and arrow wwwaaayyyyy more than any melee weapon. Interesting for a game based around a guy named link swinging a sword.

The initial reveal trailer shows Link using a bow. You're free to do whatever you want.

So far I agree with his observations/annoyances. One-shots I don't mind because it doesn't happen to me often, and if it does on a particular nasty enemy, loading from save to try again is easier than farming mats *and* using the hella awkward cooking *and* pausing during combat Resident Evil-style (even more than you already do with the dumb breaking weapons), so I'm fixing the stamina issue first.

Seems like a great world, but basic interface and operation is clunky as shit, and I've been playing Witcher 3 before this. And yes, the super frequent rain is an issue to me.

Fair review/10

love the shrine music, remix from Zelda I :)

There's also that he plays a ton of rubbish "survival" games on Steam and could just be exhausted with mechanics that deteriorate weapons/items etc. I think the disconnect is that there is a good reason why the weapons need to break so much in BotW which is that unlike previous Zelda games you can pick up weapons from literally every enemy you defeat, and if they didn't deteriorate (or were just slow to do so) the player would either acquire a ludicrously large amount of useless weapons (like Dark Souls) making them laborious to sift through, or would be constantly telling the player to drop a weapon to pick up the new one (which still does happen, but would be 1000x worse w/o weapons breaking). For me, rather than discourage me from using the weapons, it encourages me to use them as much as possible and get it over with to make that space for the newer weapons I pick up. But that's just me.

There is definitely a problem with the dificulty curve but its not insane damage output. It reads as if he forgot to upgrade his armor, he shouldnt be getting 1hkoed often. Tye problem is related though, if a enemy cant 1hko you the its noy dangerous at all as you can just pause and eat and never die.

I like Jim's opinion pieces, but a 7 for Zelda and a 9.5 for Fallout 4 is the fastest track to irrelevancy I've ever seen.

Yeah. I agree with you. It's his opinion though, so I won't sweat it all that much. Personally, it's one of my all time favorites.

How I feel. People get this impression that they should be hoarding weapons and it's typically those people complaining about the system. The people who just go with it often say they accumulate too many weapons at times.

Man, this fucking game. I've put God only knows how many hours into it, I've only unlocked about a quarter of the map, beat one Divine Beast, and I still feel like I don't know what the hell I'm doing and I'm still scared of everything I come across murdering me horribly. And I can't stop playing. I've got other shit to do, Nintendo, what the fuck.

So I went to the castle to see what Ganon looked like, but I didn't enter through the main entrance
and I met Fireblight Ganon instead. Didn't beat him, just left, but is that a way to replay the bosses? To enter the top of the castle through one of the side entrances? At firs I thought it was the first part of the final fight, but when I entered the "normal" entrance, I met Calamity Ganon right away. Still waiting to beat him, so no spoilers :)
