The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild |OT2| It's 98 All Over Again

Sometimes I wonder if Nintendo went a bit too far with the "plan ahead for your open world travels" thing. I ran out of arrows in the last stage of a gigant snake kind-of-miniboss thing. There are no arrows to be found in the area, which is very remotely located compared with mobgoblins, villages or any other source of arrows. I just wasted all my anti-freeze potions trying to perfectly time an aerial attack on the last "eye" of the snake, but failed. Lesson learned about going out in the wilderness with too few arrows, but the situation kind of sucks from a "fun" perspective.

The game is so generous with weapon variety and drops that I can't find fault with the durability system.

It would be a worse game without it.

yes, but most of the weapons that drop are crap
In what sense?

Is it really so much of a problem that enemies don't drop the best items all the time? Of course better weapons and equipment are more difficult to find. That makes them valuable. That they break makes the discovery of new powerful weapons more valuable still.

The durability system improves the game in a significant way.

sterling's point about durability hits the nail on the fucking head. I was just thinking about how much of a bummer it is last night. I feel like the incentive to find cool gear is gone because it will just fucking break if you use it. With the loss of that incentive, I am a lot less eager to explore the world. I assumed I would unlock an easy way to repair weapons later in the game, but jim's review makes it clear that the repair system is too expensive and inconvenient. Complaints about stamina were also on the money.

Overall I'd say his review mirrors my own thoughts quite well. It's a good, very good game, but not the 10/10 dick-melting masterpiece I was expecting.

Jim's review isn't clear about anything IMO, except that: Stamina is stupid. Weapons breaking is stupid. Weather system that affects the player is stupid. Any thing that forces the player to plan ahead is stupid. I'm surprised that he doesn't complain about the hearts, but that's probably because it exists in the old games.

If you find a cool weapon, you can save it until you get a duplicate. Increase the number of weapon slots. Or put it on the wall in Link's house or whatever. Most weapons have duplicates, and most weapons respawns at blood moon AFAIK.

Plus I like having a few low powered weapons when I have to deal with weak mobs. I dont want to use my glorious 56 power claymore on chu chus. Theyre also great for throwing at enemies faces too.

I do agree that rain makes too big an impact on your ability to climb. Holds things up.

Exactly. I also love—love—having to weigh cost vs benefit of engaging new enemies. Do I risk wasting my arrows, or my 70+ claymore, to gain who knows what from this moblin camp or this lynel? Does it ultimately matter—am I heading to a place where these powerful items would be more useful than random drops?

Link has a house that you can jazz up? I dunno why but I love having a homestead in RPGs that I can do up.

So I just found the last great fairy (at least I think it's the last one) and she wants 10.000 rupies (!). So my question is, is it worth it? What do I get for it?

It's nice to see a more measured review that isn't just "ehh but it's Zelda so 10/10," while at the same time still being a favourable score.
Please link one review that does this. You folks shitposting this nonsense are really transparent.

What area of the map are you in?

At least you can play around it. The ui shows the weather for the next few hours so you can nake a fire and skip the day way before the rain screws you

I can respect why someone wouldn't like the stamina and durability systems...but then again i actually like them because they make me think about both how i'm going to get to certain places and how i'm going to tackle certain enemies.

A lot of the drops are pretty good equipment, especially if the monster is strong.

If you mark parts of the map that spawn or drop good equipment, you'll have no problems hoarding great gear at regular intervals.

Rain and soundtrack are so far my biggest complaints about 50 hours in. Its not a bad OST but its just too sparse.
Well, the game is called "Breath of the Wild". I think it's obvious that the environmental "tracks" are the sounds of nature, and i think it works amazingly well with the artstyle and the atmosphere.

Tracks in villages, when riding a horse, in dungeons, shrines and field boss battles are always on point. Really can't think of a bad track for now.

It's nice to see a more measured review that isn't just "ehh but it's Zelda so 10/10," while at the same time still being a favourable score.

I have to say I think almost every other 3D Zelda since Majoras Mask does town life better than Breath of the Wild, and that's one of my favorite parts of a Zelda game.

A buddy of mine who is a hardcore PC gamer is so taken with Zelda that he just paid 400+ and rush shipping to get a Switch this week. The hype is real my friends.

Well, when people say "I love the game except for stamina and weapon durability" it's a bit contradictory since the most of the game design is based on these two mechanics.

Thought I'd hate them, turns out they don't bother me at all. The stamina actually makes some moments exciting. Earlier I was knocked off a cliff by an enemy, fell head first down a ravine just missing the sides and landed in the water, I swam to the cliff face and with what little stamina I had left climbed it. I just made the top with a thin sliver of stamina left, the relief was immense.

Wat? No way Breath of the Wild has the best town life imo for a zelda game. NPC's have shedules and stuff shelter for rain and bad weather sleep etc.

Similar story. Colleague is a major PC gamer who had no interest in Switch and then watched a 3 hour Zelda stream and hunted a Switch down last weekend.

Not there yet myself. But i think the fairy's unlock in any order, so the 10k is just cause this is the last one.

I'm not sure about that. i haven't got them all yet, but I found one which cost 1000 rupees (
horse resurrection one
) before I found another which cost 500 rupees (
one you can see from Tabantha Tower
).

Yup. All of the other Zeldas where every npc has a schedule does it way better.
In fact here's a list of all of them:

Hmm, ok, you're probably right as the same was true when I found the first one you mentioned.

Yeah, that comment was kind of ridiculous. NPCs in general are far more dynamic than they've ever been .

imo it's on par or with or better than Majora's Mask. MM's 3 day system gives it emotional tension, BotW doesn't have that but the NPC's still have schedules, vivid personalities, and some of the character moments are really poignant.

imo I wish the reviewers talked about the story more, the overarching narrative is simple in its allusion to the classic games but the individual characters, interpersonal stories, the world building is pretty amazing.

I fundamentally disagree with most of the criticisms of the weapon breaking system, however I do think there are definitely QoL improvements that could have been made. I actually found that I was often finding too many good weapons and they weren't breaking fast enough so that I had to frequently manage my inventory and make room for it. Allowing you to menu right from the pick up and jostle the items there would have been a much better decision and something I wish they would patch in. Also allowing you drop rather than throw quickly from the quick select menu (+ bows and shields.)

All in all, these were minor quibbles which did not affect my enjoyment overall. I enjoyed quickly dispatching enemies, tossing shit at their face as it was about to break, quick-switching to something else and finishing them off. Jabbing them with electric spear to disarm them, then going in for a running swing with a big 2H. It was all fantastic and I hope they use this same engine for at least one more title. Also, can't wait for the battle tower and the hard mode to engage deeply with the systems again.
