The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild |OT2| It's 98 All Over Again

I've found the first moment where I was disappointed that Nintendo failed to account for something in the environmental interaction in this game. I was going on a path through a tropical-ish location when I stumbled upon two sisters being attacked by monsters. After saving them, I found out from them that they were searching for hearty truffles. One sister just wanted to go home, but the other sister said that they couldn't go home until they found some truffles. I happened to have some truffles on hand and so decided to drop them in front of them to see what kind of reaction they'd have. Turned out there was no reaction. This seems like an obvious oversight; surely there should be some kind of reaction from the sisters, even if it's just "it doesn't mean anything unless we find the truffles ourselves!"

Real talk, fuck the mushroom twins. I've saved their asses so many times across Hyrule and they've given me nothing, not even a handful of rupees.

They can deal with the bokoblins themselves next time.

I need an idea of how tough Ganon is. I'm pretty much ready to go and I have about 20 hearts. I'm going to upgrade my armor, buy some arrows and start cooking. Any tips before I go in?
Ganon is about as easy as an easy Dark Souls boss. I wouldn't be nervous.

I have the Wind Waker Toon Link Smash ammino, is he supposed to give me a classic costume or only the newer toon link amiibo? I've scanned about five times , I just get materials and a bow.

I got the Cap of the Wind and the Wind Waker Boomerang from my Smash Toon Link amiibo.

Note that amiibo usage can be save-scummed. Save your game before you start scanning amiibo in and if you don't get what you want, just reload that file. The game will usually autosave as soon as you open the amiibo chest, so make sure you have manually saved before you attempt it.

I tried that but with some other characters. Its probably what EmCeeGramr is saying that they serve as indicator that particular item is nearby. It would be cool if they would accept stuff from me like horses do.

I'm kinda disappointed that falling trees don't do anything to enemies. I lined up a tree to fall on an enemy as I chopped it and it did nothing.

Well it's been 9 days, me and my nephew are taking turns about and still loving every minute of it. I have done more exploring, shrines and korok seeds, but damn he is well ahead in dungeons and rare loot. I have been watching him play and it's such a great feeling seeing him enjoy a game without guns or online, and best of all telling me today Zelda is now his fave game, made me near tear up having been a fan since my old Snes days. I just hope it's not over 5 years till the next one, maybe they can squeeze one in in 3 or 4 years.

I'm not 100% sure, but I think that's exactly the kind of reaction I got when I tried to do this with the Silent Princess couple. Was mildly impressed and annoyed at the same time, though maybe I misread it to begin with.

Or maybe he just liked Horizon more? But no, that's crazy talk right? Not unexpected to see these kinds of posts in here but a bit disappointing nonetheless.

I believe journalism/critics are becoming less and less "critics," and more and more opinionated people. One over the other isn't a bad thing, but if a person is writing a professional review? Critique it and review it as such. Don't go into a project, this being a review, and let personal opinions get in the way. It's a critique review, not a personal review (academic vs anecdotal).

Going over many reviewers scores, Sterling being one of them, there is no consistency with in their own rules and guidelines. Have a game with 1 pro and 5 cons, but manages a score of 9+, or a game with 4 pros and 4 cons with a score of 5. If these reviews are to give impressions, then look and score professionally. If these guys want to give an all out opinion, let certain things cloud their judgement, then are other means of giving out scores. Users give their opinions and rate accordingly. Make a video. But if it's official/professional, reviews absolutely cannot say "I like this game better, so I will give this a lower score.

Unfortunately, this is prevalent through out the industry. Even though scores/expectations do not really affect us gamer's short term, in the long term it will. Many publishers rely on metacritic as a means to hold jobs over these developers heads. Having a few reviewers who decide to get a bug up their ass, and are playing another game they like more at the moment, throw random low scores at these games and poof...developer gets the ax.

Back to Sterling, I believe that if he is going to review the game then stay consistent so that way the score makes sense. In this case, the score does not.

That's strange, seeing as Link can be hurt by them, like if you watch Dunkey's video where one gets struck by lighting and hits him.

Mount Lanayru question/spoilers:

So, after saving the dragon it starts flying around the region at night. Anyone tried to ride it? Seems like you can but I haven't tried yet
.

This was such a happy place.

Who cares how Jim Sterling scored Zelda? It's his opinion, his review scale, and he's entitled to score it how he likes. His criticisms are fair.

Let's just get back to playing and discussing one of the greatest games ever made.

But Phantom Pain was still a Kojima game.
He gave triforce heroes an 8, I doubt he had this much problem with BotW if 79 other reviewers didn't, and most of them were done before the embargo.

EDIT: Please don't change the title, it still a OoT homage
it's the best thing i've done in gaf

Maybe he just liked it more?

As I've said before though I think it's silly to compare review scores given previously. Peoples taste, thoughts and opinions do change over time, that's a fact, and no reviewer is going to look at every single score they've given previously so they can give a correct score to a game...

As for problems with the game, have you not seen the 500 threads regarding durability, or all the complaints regarding weather effects? I'm amazed a reviewer didn't use that to knock points down before.

Either way, sometimes people can just not like an highly rated game as much as other people for various reasons. Reviewers are human. I'm pretty sure if I did a review of Last of Us, I'd be getting the same kind of shit Jim Sterling got, because I just didn't really think it was that great, good but not great. Even though everyone else thought it was gods gift to mankind. I feel that without having any feelings of ill will towards Naughty Dog or Sony.

I could not disagree more.

Agreed, I think it stands as a testament to the incredible appeal this game has to so many people -- it won't please everyone, and that's totally fine; for me though it's probably my GOAT.

I also loved Fallout 4 and agreed with Jim's 9.5

Oh yeah I did get a boomerang once. Okay, so it's possible that I can get the costume, cool!

Yeah I save scummed a chest once on accident and realized you could do that. I don't care that much, I'll get it when I get it.

With a 97 breath of the wild is joined by mario galaxy, galaxy 2, metroid prime and gta v. With 98 it is joined by GTA IV.

Either way what i wanted the most was that this game would be the best reviewed zelda since ocarina of time to show that nintendo is definetely going to the right direction. cosidering that 2 lower scores didn't affect it much and it still is a super well reviewed game, and a vast amount of people are loving the game, it really doesn't matter.

I'd get myself one of those guardian shields, helped me immensely.

Silly personal grudges also grow. He just threw his review credibility out with this one.

Fighting moblins can sometimes result in the worst frame drops in the game and even full screen freezes. It's really not acceptable.

Strange. I'm playing on Wii U. Generally, bad framerates appear in towns or stables. Haven't seen one of those unintended freeze frames yet myself.

I really wish the review thread was unlocked so that it can stop being talked about here ad nauseam

I can't get over how overpowered some of these abilities area.
The lightning just destroys whole camps in two strikes. The auto-heal and super jump are very very useful too. I still don't know what the Goron ability is.

At first, I was a little pissed to find out that the enemies and equipment were scaling with me. However, I guess it makes sense in the end. They still want you to explore the entire map. If you were breaking all of your weapons on starter enemies segmented to specific areas, you would completely lose your arsenal.

Anyone know a good place to farm Deer/animals for Raw Meat?

Looking to gather as much as possible to cook and sell in large quantities.

I just ran into the thunder
dragon!!!!
Are you kidding me? This game
has dragons?!! Can I kill it?
I just ran away.

Finally went to the first settlement in the story. For some reason I wasn't that intimidated by the size of the map before but I'm sure as hell now. I was just thinking of the time I spent doing stuff in just a small portion. Will follow the story a little more to unlock some things.

BTW there seems to be a severe lack of physical copies of the game. Shouldn't be too hard to provide a decent supply of some plastic cartridges? :) Even saw some Switches in shops, but no Zelda everywhere.

I've been hearing conflicting reports about
unbreakable weapons, namely that there's a way to combine the two repairable tridents into an unbreakable trident. Can anyone confirm if this is just a rumor or if that ability is limited to the Master Sword?
