Granblue Fantasy (Mobile Game) Spends 300 Million Yen on Giant Newspaper Ad

This is really something.

Cygames' Granblue Fantasy smartphone game celebrated its third anniversary on Friday. To mark the occasion, the Friday issue of the Asahi Shimbun newspaper featured a gigantic ad for the game. Twitter users posted images of the ad.

A smartphone game purchasing an ad that is the length of four newspaper pages is surprising. But when people turned over the over-sized page, they got another shock. The ad is double-sided.

Internet users in Japan used the advertising fees listed on Asahi Shimbun's official website to estimate that the ad cost Cygames more than 300 million yen (about US$2.6 million). A full-page ad in the national version of the newspaper costs 39,855,000 yen (US$347,000). Because the ad is the length of four regular pages and double-sided, the ad may have cost the game's producers 318,840,000 yen (US$2.8 million) to publish it in the newspaper.

I don't really play many mobile games. Is this one any good? Their ad is working because I kinda wanna check it out now.

Wow.
....Wow.

That looks really cool. I don't play the game, but would love to have a copy of that ad. Giant character group pieces are so neat.

So many whales.

I bet they made even more money after that weird controversy last year since people are chasing the guaranteed spark thing. lol

The only F2P games I've been able to get into are those based on properties I already enjoy - FFRK, Fire Emblem... I liked Galaxy of Heroes for a while until I couldn't boost my characters without an insane amount of credits (this was about a year ago so maybe it's been improved since then).

I played GBF for a couple weeks but just couldn't get interested in collecting various anime characters. I did participate in the free rolls last week just in case I wanted to play again, but I don't remember anything about what I was doing in the game.

Whale powers truly give GBF life.

Seeing all the past events, I really hope they bring back the ones I missed especially since the next event is the redux of "Let's Hang!" for that sweet Lowain SR.

CyGames is flush with cash thanks to GBF, they've always spend it extravagantly for events and things like this in the past too.

Must be nice ^^;

Time manages to go by weirdly fast for granblue.
I started roughly a year ago.

The front side is cool with it showing literally everyone, but the back is kinda neat because it's a timeline of last year's events starting past 2nd anniversry.

Robomi Part 2 and Platinum Sky were the best events this year fight me

Boots & Blades, Alberts Event, The most recent event, were the best. I also loved the one with Morphe and Phoebe.

I can't wait to see what Granblue Fantasy Re: Link's marketing campaign will be like. Especially if they want to release it in the West. Hopefully everyone else will see why I'm so excited for the game.

Wasn't this game grossing $1 billion a year at one point?

I think it's still pretty popular. Especially with the English option (even if it's not fully localized) + considering their other games and the anime starting soon + Ps4 game and their other ps4 project. They have lots of revenue on the way.

It's been pretty clear for a while that Cygames has far more money than they know what to do with at this point.

Even with that though, this seems... really excessive. And I thought the e-sports team they just created (and not even for their own games!) was silly.

And it doesn't even seem like they're including the game/anime tie in event characters there based on what I can see here.

I really hope the Slayers event returns someday since I got into the game after it was over...

Keep in mind that this is a mobile game developer who was so surprised by their own success they literally don't know what else to do with all their money. They've tried everything and can't seem to spend any of it fast enough!

- They have 3 major original IPs they own: Rage of Bahamut, Granblue Fantasy, Shadowverse
- They have localized all the games in English even when there is no official distribution partner in the US and Europe
- They started funding really high budget anime productions for their IPs.
- Unhappy with just paying other studios buckets of cash to make shows for them, they started up their own anime studio as well.
- They expanded to an Osaka studio to experiment with high end console production as well.
- Their next mobile game is co-developed by Platinum Games and Fuzz, and written/directed by Yasumi Matsuno.
- They have a PS4 Platinum Games Granblue action RPG in production from the MGR director.
- They have their own original PS4 RPG in development.
- They seem to contribute generously to charity causes every year.

Yet they still can't get rid of all those yens because everything they do seems to just make them MORE money. The horror!
