Kong: Skull Island |OT| For your health!

I thought they really nailed the giant monsters fighting.

It's just most of the human elements that were severely lacking at any point where they weren't shooting things.

I watched this yesterday, went in with no hype or much interest. Merely some mild curiosity in what's coming going forward. John C Reilly made this thing , like every second he's on screen I loved.

I can also safely say I enjoyed it more than Peter Jacksons jerkoff 2005 kong almost entirely because this one isn't 19 hours long. I can safely say I'm looking forward to what comes next from this "series".

Kong Skull Island will be more re-watchable than Godzilla (2014), but I vastly prefer what they tried to do with Godzilla.

I'm afraid the rest of these films will follow Kongs dumb as bricks, force fed humor approach.

So, I guess it's best to ask here, but regarding the after credits scene...

Do the monsters all fight each other or can they coexist? I know nothing of classic Godzilla except that King Ghidorah is the biggest and baddest. Like, can Mothra and Rodan be friends with each other and tag team Godzilla, or is it going to be one gigantic 'fuck you all!' melee?
Mothra has generally mostly been a good Kaiju. Rodan is like Godzilla, neutral who just happens to lean towards good. With this new monster verse, no one knows how they will be portrayed.

In one of the old movies, Mothra asked Godzilla and Rodan to help fight Ghidorah and they both shrugged it off. They eventually helped her out in the end.

Probably a stupid question, when John Goodman was telling Sam Jackson about how he was the only survivor of a monster attack, and how it motivated him to find the island for proof of monsters. Was the attack he was refering to, referencing Godzilla?

It seemed to be implying that to me considering they showed a ship earlier in the film with giant claw marks that looked like Godzilla's handy work.

I know that people expect good characters in a movie they watch but I don't think I've seen one kaiju movie in my 37 tears on this earth were there was one memorable character. You watch giant monster films for giant monsters.

I seriously did not give people the credit for knowing what happened in the post credit scene. There was a bunch of excitement in the air, but when this was shown.

Edit: nvm, I obviously can't figure out how to wrap an image in a spoiler.

well not really, some kaiju centric Japanese films have more human focus (variations of Godzilla films, modern Gamera), but they are more on the tolerable side than memorable

Watched it last night, also first time watching in 4dx and it was a blast! Getting sprayed with water whenever blood sprayed was pretty fun.

I read a slashfilm article about the director's video game and anime influences:
http://www.slashfilm.com/kong-skull-island-influences/#more-403072

There’s an Easter egg to Kings of Summer. There are specific Mononoke Easter eggs. There are Zelda Easter eggs. There are Akira Easter eggs. There are, what else we got, a Metal Gear Easter egg in the movie. There’s an Alien Easter egg in the movie. There is, I mean, it’s pretty endless.
And was wondering if anyone caught any of the Easter Eggs. I'm looking for the Metal Gear Solid one, especially since this is the guy who will be directing it...

The only references I got were the
Jurassic Park, pulp Fiction and First person shooter ones

MGS Easter egg spoiler -
The boat built from the old P51 is called Gray Fox!

I had fun. Felt like a bunch of scenes were cut out in the final version though. Kinda weird that the cave paintings looked so nice at the end.

I saw this, and went in not expecting too much, other than knowing it's suppose to connect to Godzilla, and Damn, that was pretty fun. Pacing was just straight to the point for me and kept me hooked all the way. I also appreciated how well they presented the tribes-people. A plus in my book.

Very interested in how Godzilla v King Kong will go down. Curious to see if we'll see any actors return for this too. It's like the one thing so far these monster movies lack is that there isn't a Nick Fury go to character to connect them all until the big match up movie.

Shit, they should of keep Byran Cranston around as that dude to connect them all. Could of just had him go around and offer people a spot in that Monarch initiative against monsters. lol

Was pretty fun overall with some cool action sequences.

But it could have fleshed out its characters a bit more (yeah I know we go to watch these movies for the monster battles, but still).

Oh and the humor outside of Sam Jackson's and John C. Reilly's characters (who were by far the best characters) fell a bit flat.

I love John C Reilly. Anyway the movie was fun but would've been better if they focused on fewer human characters. And its almost cheating to use a classic rock soundtrack, so good. It was like the Marvel Cinematic Universe of monster movies

Movie was lit!!! Post credits scene gave me all types of chills! They really about this Monster erse. My childhood self was feeling out so hard!!! So happy Kaiju is coming back with a fierceness. With Shin Godzilla being so great and them learning from the mistakes of Godzilla (2014), which I still love, KONG definitely had me pumped. Even my gf was majorly impressed!!

Monsters were cool, characters (and dialogues in particular) ranged from bad to cringeworthy.

DAT POST CREDITS SCENE though.

This was the trashiest movie I've seen for quite some time.

I liked the big fights and the monsters. They where entertaining. It had nice visuals and somewhat creative set pieces every once in a while.
Otherwise it was a special flavored kind of bad.

The most blatant 'Trailer Shots' -that only made it into the movie to be able to present a cool trailer- since Lost World.

It took itself way too serious and was kind of hilarious because of that.
An example: The scene where Brie Larson was trying to make a picture of the night lights, but wasn't able to do so because her flashlight was broken (in a brightly lit room with torches everywhere). Enter Tom that is able to give her his lighter, so she can change the dial on her camera by one setting and Tom can say two sentences about how much the lighter means to him.

People had charisma, but there were no characters at all. Everyone acted really stupid, nobody reacted in an appropriate way to the dangers or the death that occurred all around them.

The whole movie is written around set pieces. It's not really a story, but ways to get from Kong Fight A) to Fight B) - the movie provides some instances that make people look cool (Katana, Gas Mask) but moves at a neck breaking pace that doesn't provide breathing room for anything - because that would make it that much more obvious how stupid everything is written.

And I don't believe that the movie knows how it comes across and acts appropriate - I seems like a case of a 200m production that tries and believes it provides nice ideas but falls completely flat outside of maybe 15 Minutes of Monster Mash.

BTW does the buffalo not have lungs? He was underwater with his face - I suppose just so the group could be really close when they discovered him and it would have been to obvious when he would have been walking towards them..

Dear World,

Please don't end.

We're so close to a modern remake of
KING KONG VS. GODZILLA
.

Sincerely,
Me

Yeah that scene is where I went from thinking the movie was okay to not liking it. It's really bad. Like I couldn't believe that was in a big budget movie.

I just got back from the film and it was really, really enjoyable. For a monster movie, the characters were just about where they needed to be. Humans are usually just there to be a viewpoint and to move the film along. This managed to do that and kept them engaging enough, something that the 2014 Godzilla film kind of missed the boat on a little bit. They don't need to be deep or anything but they need to keep your interest is all.

The action was pretty great and it really gives me a lot of hope for the Godzilla films coming up. I also loved all the references to that lore in there as well.

I think the biggest problem was the sudden time jumps at points and not laying down a little more logic to some of the things that happened. It works without it but including that stuff would make it feel tighter.

The after credits scene was great and got me hyped. =o

Just got out. The movie is incredibly weird and stupid. It's on par with the new Godzilla in my opinion, but for completely different reasons.

Best compliment is the CG and the monster design. Everything looks fantastic.

Oh yeah I agree that "I need a light" scene was a dumb and clumsy way to foreshadow the lighter.

This pretty much sums up why I also prefer Kong over 2014 Godzilla.

Agreed. I remember more of Walter White and Quick Silver than I do godzilla in Godzilla 2014. Felt way more like it was there movie with godzilla sprinkled in. While this to me, felt like it was Kong's movie, with the human characters doing exactly what they needed to for moving the plot.

I will admit I wasn't a big fan of the skull crawlers. I would have rather Kong had his own sort of arch rival creature who he had to fight for the title of King of the island.

It wouldn't have been a problem if they were interesting enough to carry the film. I always felt they shouldn't have dropped Cranston's character so early into the film, because he was the only one with some kind of character arc. Whereas here, you had Sam. L. Jackson and John C. Riley as two (moderately) interesting characters to follow. And tons of quips from everyone to keep things going.

In addition to this, Kong is simply more watchable as a schlocky monster action blockbuster, with it's neat Apocalypse Now art direction. Godzilla had some ambition to rise above that, but it didn't quite reach the bar it set for itself. (Shin Godzilla then proceeded to show everyone what a REAL Godzilla movie was like.)

It's so true. The human element was not where I needed it to be in Godzilla 2014. While in Kong, the characters did exactly what I needed them to do. And in some cases, that was literally just get eaten lol.

Godzila 2014 could have worked better. There have been many Godzilla movies with similar human/monster screen-time ratios, but the humans generally hold your attention somewhat. Only Bryan Cranston's character seemed to really do that in Godzila 2014, and he's obviously not in the film enough to carry it.

Ehh... outside of Shin and original, the humans in those other Godzilla movies are kinda crappy too. And even then it's more of Shin and original humans being more on the tolerable side.

That's the problem of Kaiju movies. I am literally just here for the gaint monster. I really, really, really couldn't care less about anyone else in the movie.

I'd actually have Hollywood forgo humans entirely if that were possible. Just have everything take place from the perspective of the monster, especially if there are other monsters in there to fight.

They still held my attention to some extent. There is usually something amusing going on with them. They work for me in those movies, and get the job done. For the story and tone Godzilla 2014 was trying to convey, I needed more engaging human characters.

Getting back to Kong, the characters did exactly what I needed of them. They moved the plot, played their stock roles, and held my attention adequately till the next monster fight. Kong is basically precisely what I want out of a B-Movie style creature feature.

But a movie cannot be carried by the kaiju alone. The reason kaiju gets so much attention is because they actually don't have much screen time so when they are on screen they are truly loved.

That and well... you can't really keep the budget on them being on screen 24/7 heh.

the closest we'll get is Final Wars and even then you'd got those parts where you swore were some sort of Showa-era Super Sentai parody of an evil organization with henchmen running around

not saying Godzilla 2014 humans are good though, as much as I loved that film that is its major flaws, I'm just saying that the complaint isn't really special

I mean hell, those MST3K godzilla movies with humans were only watchable because the gang riffed them

and there's that general rule in tokusatsu that a major kid character is always either bad or annoying

i had a lot of fun watching this, reminded me of Transformers 1 a lot, except a lot more things for the people to do.

there were a lot of things that happened that i didn't personally expect to happen. the island itself was pretty cool with all of the monsters. and john c reilly was funny but was just so out of place. the movie was so serious otherwise.

tom hiddleston with the samurai sword and the gas mask slicing dinosaurs through the green fart clouds is the most wtf moment i've had this year. almost comes close to the batman v superman future batman scene with the bugs flying around.

I actually just went and rewatched Godzilla 2014 for the first time since buying the Bluray and honestly, it's a better flick the second time around because you know what's coming and you can appreciate the other things they did in the film. As for preferring one or the other, I like both. Kong is the schlocky monster action movie that the Godzilla VS XX movies are while Godzilla 2014 is in the same style that the original, 1985, and Shin Godzilla are. They both do justice to what they set out to do for the most part. Yeah, I do think the characters aren't terribly engaging in G2014 but that's more so my opinion as an average movie-goer. As a Godzilla fan, I really didn't have an issue with the film at all aside from it being too damn dark. It's not like the Godzilla films have ever had particularly engaging characters, most of the time, lol.

As for Shin Godzilla, I really enjoyed the film but I don't think it's superior to Godzilla 2014. It definitely does a bunch of things better but it stumbles as a film that anyone can watch and fully enjoy. It's very much aimed at Japanese audiences with its heavy criticism of government, decision-making, etc. That's lost on folks that aren't Japanese or understand the issues there. The entire thing also oozes Anno from in every frame as well with his silly love of text and that dialogue flow. Thankfully, the film just nails Godzilla itself and the sheer terror of the beast while still providing a great amount of screen time.

But I digress. Kong was a ton of fun and I hope they continue this.

I'd argue Shin and 2014 do two different things at their core, so comparing them really is gonna be off.

Still, I reckon the humans in this movie are kinda dead or old come the crossover? Since this takes place in the 70's whereas I reckon the crossover would be in present time.

The characters in those movies still usually do all I need them to do. Like, that annoying kid did more for me in Godzilla's Revenge, relative to Aaron Taylor-Johnson in Godzilla 2014 lol.

Shin Godzilla and G2014 do the exact same thing, a disaster film and how humans respond and deal with it as a result. You can differentiate them based on what they do on top of that but they definitely share the same core premise as a film.

On that note, please no serious Kong movie in this universe. It would be a bad idea. =(

The time stuff is my main issue with the crossover because it almost 100% guarantees no human crossovers which I would like to have

methinks the crossover will feature original/new characters save for maybe the MONARCH peeps

maybe I just have low tolerance to annoying children, man it was annoying haha, I think the only kid I enjoyed was from the Gamera the Brave movie

ah well at least not that kid from Minilla's movie

I guess I'm looking it more on the focus, like in Godzilla it's more on how the masses survive in a disaster film featuring a kaiju fight vs. commentary on red tape towards the destructive force in Shin

And Kong doesn't strike me as a serious guy here. At least hopefully anyway.

Actually his age thing has been hilariously noticed by the fans

This movie was lame, the time jumps ruined the pace. Also the charcters are one dimensional. King kong is good but pretty much gets a little more screen time then godzilla to be truthful. The fights were okay but no to the level of the last godzilla fight from the 2014 one. Also the logic is absurd in this movie. It's a pretty film at times but that's about it. Also king Kong was okay he's young in this but he gets his ass kicked pretty easily. John c was awesome liked his character but all other charcters are paper weight.

I can concede that I'm the weird one on this lol.

My only complaint is that we only got to see the giant spider and giant squid in 1 scene each. I would have liked to see more of them. The things that killed Kong's parents were kind of dull looking.

Godzilla 2014 just falls apart in its second act, and the audience is just bored waiting for the monster action. Gareth was too fond of constantly cutting away to focus on the boring subplots that weren't very interesting.

Honestly though if they didn't cut away from that first MUTO fight in Hawaii and had a good fight scene there I doubt there would be as many complaints about Godzilla's screen time.

Goddamn I had a fucking good time. Probably one of the best monster action movies I've ever seen. I loved how the script was tight and simple, but really satisfying. The casting was great. Some characters felt a bit wasted, but there's a lot of great stuff there too. The tone was perfect. It wasn't comedy, but it was enjoyable enough to have that laid back adventure tone while still feeling a little gritty. Loved the setting and the cinematography was to DIE for. OMG. The lighting, the framing, the action choreography, the monster designs, the island layout. Yum. Yum Yum. More please. This is what Godzilla 2014 should have been!

Much more fun and better paced than Godzilla.
However, the Night Manager was just as miscast as The Pianist in the last Donkey Kong movie.
If they'd had balls, Brie Larson's character could have been a combo of both and been lead. Add a few more monsters and kill all the Marines and you might have had a modern Aliens.

Not sure how Hiddleston was miscast. You just needed an attractive actor who can handle a paper thin role. It could have been Channing Tatum just as easily or whoever can mug for the camera.
