I just beat the game. That was certainly a contender for the worst final boss in the series.

Completion rate stuff.

Shrines: 120/120
Korok Seeds: 400/900
Map Completion Rate: 57.07%
Compendium: Completed
Side Quests Completed: 66/76
Shrine Quests Completed: 41/42 (How? I have all the shrines.)

What's map completion rate,

The acting by her and Zelda is mindblowingly horrendous. It's like me trying to fake a British accent

I still don't think Zelda is all that bad. The acting doesn't necessarily come off as great, but when put up against Rhoam, Impa and Revali; it at least sounds okay.

Still, overall it is a shame that this is the best they could do for the first Zelda game with a major focus on voiced characters; given that voice acting is nowhere near new for Nintendo games as a whole.

Not to go full skypunch but... I think they should have gotten the EU team from xenoblade to do the English localisation, if that was the intent. They clearly missed the mark.

I was a bit wary to bring up Xenoblade specifically for that reason, but both games had a better consistent standard of voice acting than this - although the fake accent they decided to give Celica in X did exhibit a similar issue.

(Though as he's only a centaur, he'd only be on par with Sidon at most.)

I said it in another thread, but I like the voice acting in the game. It reminds me of an 80s fantasy film. They had a lot of weird ADR that created an otherworldly atmosphere. It's charming. It's a style that works for me. Not all acting has to be from the same mold.

Finally figured out how to make high level warmth elixirs.
climbed that Mt Nayru or whatever it's called. Leaping from the peak and bullet timing the dragons eyes on the way down was pretty fresh!

Yes! I feel like Zelda and Mipha were based on the child-like empress from the Neverending Story.

I almost completely destroyed my entire weapon inventory trying to do a stupid golf-like shrine involving stasis last night. :(

Also, do giant energy cores serve any purpose or should I just sell them?

Love the music at the desert bazaar area. Kinda makes me think of The Sims music for some reason, in a good way!

And Gerudo Town is awesome! I've been to every town in the game and this one must be the biggest? Feels that way at least. Looking forward to all the side quests that'll come from it.

The desert looks great in this game too. The lighting, the massive landscape, the little touches like the heat fuzziness and footsteps from link and npcs. Awesome. So good to have zelda in hd (from the ground up).

Busted three electric weapons but I finally got an ancient core from a major test of strength. Finally beat that upgrade quest after wins.

To me Zelda is pretty bad. The voice doesn't even seem to match the character. I don't just blame the actors.

The script has issues and trying to emote in a one sided conversation is probably awkward. Also the sound mixing seems weird too. Like the voices don't have the right volume and don't seem to be coming from the characters. Being animations of course it's adr,but it sucks.

Xenoblade was fine, even good. Ball was dropped here.

So I think I have about 17 hrs in, finished the Zora guardian and I'm not sure I'm liking this Zelda...

I really want to like it but weapon durability and constant inventory management is getting to me. They are things that I hate in games and if there is a mod to remove it, it's the first thing I do and I hate it in this. Please tell me the master sword doesn't break after 3 enemies...

Does weapon durability really get better later on? I've upgraded my inventory a few times and now the guy is in korok village, anyone know where that is? I think so far I've only opened up the right side of the map. And don't get me started on gyro puzzles on the Wii u gamepad. Also anyone else playing on Wii u have their game frame rate hit single digits when a moblin ragdolls? It happened 3 times last night...

Yeah, my issue was more from figuring out how much power to put into it. It seemed I was either just short or too long with the difference of one more swing. But I finally did it in the end.

I did the golf shrine just this morning. When I went down to the second hole (quite a bit more difficult than the first), I ran into the same too short/too long problem. I ended up just
picking up the ball and moving it a little farther back
and that solved the "too long" thing :) Not sure if that was the designer's solution or not.

It gets better. In the late game I almost never had my weapons break. The Master Sword doesn't break after three enemies but it will eventually "lose power" (AKA Break) and need to recharge.

Korok Forest is
in the Lost Woods north of Hyrule Castle.

The horse controls are fine, but jump 7 is bugged. You cant do that jump at max speed.
It's not about speed, you can do the whole race with no speed boost, which are just for the longest stretches. When you approach that jump, you're almost always going diagonal, but if you look on the other side of the jump, the mountain is actually cutting into the jump, so the horse isn't going to attempt it. What you're supposed to do is swing wide and then go at it straight or diagonal towards the stable and you'll clear it. Took me ~6 tries to get 1:15.

Horses control like crap in this game regardless of whether they're newly found or fully trained. I've seriously only used a horse for maybe 10 minutes total of my around 50 hour playthrough so far. They're rendered almost completely useless by the fact that there is so much vertical exploration in this game. One little somewhat steep incline and they do a full stop and refuse to move.

I'll stick with the paraglider and fast travel.

This really isn't too much of a problem for anything but the most mountainous regions. As long as there is a path your horse will path its way to you. It just takes whistling at various point of your climb to kite your horse along.

I know which one you're talking about. I used 5 whacks from the iron sledge and switched out for one more with a sword. Second attempt after that.

That's good to hear, thanks. Maybe I'll give it a few more hours

That's the beauty of the puzzles. Very often there are solutions to them that are outside of what the designers had originally intended. Like the first gyro puzzle that I did with the ball going through the maze.
Flipped the controller upside down, let it roll to the edge and gave it a little smack at the end.
Problem solved.

Mind you, this was before I read the Kotaku review, where Jason talks about doing the same thing.

You're kinda hitting on what I'm feeling as well. I'm going to keep pushing for some hours. I guess I'll run around looking for shrines or trying to get more weapons or something.
Feel like I'm playing this game incorrectly or something.

And I'm on Wii U and experienced some pretty bad frame rate issues a few times. Never lasting too long but the first time it did give me worry that something happened to my Wii U. Looking forward to seeing things get better later on and also getting to Korok forest.

Yup, they really missed the mark and not by a small margin either. NOA never really had stellar voice acting with Other M being the point where it became painfully obvious. NOE really put the bar way out of reach for NOA after that and unfortunately the many people let go last year at NOE doesn't help the situation either.

I'm beggining to think
Kass
is stalking me. It was fine when I'd find him frequently at random stables, but now I just bumped into him deep in the jungle.

I completely agree, and I'd go a step further and say that the puzzles in this game put "traditional" Zelda dungeon puzzles to shame. BotW puzzles aren't just puzzles, but problems you must solve. And when you solve them with your own tools, it makes you feel smart. Old Zelda mostly features puzzles with a single predetermined solution that does not involve solving a problem, but rather trying to figure out what the designer was thinking when he created it. I never feel smart when solving a puzzle like that, I only feel like I jumped through the hoops that were laid out for me.

I've been playing Zelda games for 25 years and it's been my favorite game franchise since Ocarina of Time, and I'm not sure if I like it either.

If anything, BotW is showing me what I really like about Zelda games and what made them different and unique from so many other games. The vast nothingness, seemingly arbitrary enemy strength, lack of traditional Zelda dungeons and weapons that break as if they're made of glass have all been disappointments to me compared to the overworld/dungeon balance and the discovery/rewards drip of the previous games. Stumbling upon the witch's house in Link to the Past was much more rewarding than my 60th or so shrine in BotW.

It strikes me funny that I thought they reached the perfect balance of the Zelda "formula" and player freedom in A Link Between Worlds three years ago, and now they've thrown that balance completely out the window in BotW and I personally hope they don't continue down this path for the future of the franchise.

Yep. Some of the shrines really stood out for me because of this exact feeling. I just did the one with the
cube that you had to spin around to light all of the torches
, but instead of dealing with that nonsense, I
made a campfire and shot flaming arrows at the torches and solved it that way
. Any other Zelda game would've said "Nope, can't do it that way" but here the game really rewards you for thinking outside of the box.

Yeah it only started last night vs moblin in the zone north of Zora lands. No joke game freezes for a split second when they ragdoll.

I agreed with you up to the perfect balance of ALBW... I really hate ALBW's system.

I would prefer BotW with more Zelda hallmarks added back in. I never want to go back to ALBW.

My perfect Zelda is basically BotW with more story, more enemy variety, and regular dungeons added in.

I am trying to go as slowly and methodically as I can in this game and not just run in every direction that excites me, or else I'll get overwhelmed. But there is such a great satisfaction in unlocking a new tower, and seeing a new chunk of the map be revealed. Each time it is like you are adding an entire world to explore, and at least so far, the difference in the regions is so intriguing and pronounced. Just truly an amazing game, and I have barely scratched the surface at 30 hours--most of my friends are at 80 hours at least, and I feel like I can't even imagine what will await that deep into the game.

Yeah. Only moblin causes it for me so far. Not sure what is up with that.

how do you upgrade your hearts and stamina?

Pray to statues. Costs 4 of the tokens you get from shrines. Sorry, I don't remember the name of the tokens. Sure someone here definitely knows it though. EDIT: Beaten. Spirit orb.

I will admit I'm not the biggest zelda fan, only finished oot, Majora's, albw and to, but yeah I agree. This vast open world does nothing for me but make it a chore to go to the next place. While it's awesome you can pretty climb anywhere (while it's not raining) it isn't fun in the slightest. Same with riding a horse, even at Max familiarity they aren't o where near as responsive as previous Zeldas, unless that changes as well later on, idk.

I would have done that but I didn't have any arrows and was too lazy to go out and get more. Luckily it didn't take me took long to do.

God damn I detest stealth missions. And not only that I've explored every nook and cranny in that Yiga Clan prison and I still can't find the item they want me to find. I've even found the two golden rupees in there. Where is it!?

I beat the Thunder Plains quest. Everything about that was great.
The shock of being stopped suddenly by a voice, the constant thunderstorm, having to think about how you've got to get the balls in the right place (I mostly used stasis, but I'm curious if people found other solutions), and while the shrine was fairly easy, there were a few "Aha!" moments like taking the big metal crate to just push the treasure chest off the pillar, and having to to a 180 with the box to toss it onto the button. You also get a unique piece of armor. Though the coolest part was seeing the sunny weather after stepping out.

I got a few more memories, and I find them really intriguing in what exactly Link and Zelda's roles were 100 years ago. I haven't seen all of them yet and have barely touched the actual main story (farthest I've gotten is "go find these four dudes about the beasts"), but there are some pretty interesting ideas being touched upon for a Zelda game.

I'm glad I really enjoy exploring for explorations sake. Because some of the rewards you get in this game can be pitiful due to the open ended nature of the game. Eventide islands reward isn't so good when you already have a crap ton of rupees. Luckily, the island itself was a lot of fun and I can ignore the chest reward entirely.

Try getting magnesis out a bit more. ; )

There's a hidden door that takes you where you need to be.
