So the latest KF Gamescast asks whether or not Nintendo get a free pass with review scores based entirely on their IPs and their image.

Definitely an interesting question, and I do agree to an extend (i.e. Skyward Sword received an average score of like 93? Huh?)

Skyward Sword was a good game.

What's the best quick rich quick scheme using as common items as possible. Or if there's anywhere else I can quickly make rupees

Everyone's going to tell you to do the snow bowling minigame but I disagree, it's so dull. I prefer basically setting the shiekah slate tracker for ore/rare ore and just wandering the world mining ore. If you use bombs you won't need to use any other items!

Skyward Sword was a good game.

You're damn right it was!

How can I blow up deposits without it blowing my treasure off the cliff?

uhh

Ha I remember when I came across that. Thats definitely a Castaway reference, right?

All the Zelda games are open world.

Have you ever played an actual open world game except for BotW? Open world as in: You can move through the main environment without visible loading phases.

BotW is the first open world game in the Zelda series that I know of. All previous Zelda's consisted of rooms with defined entry and exit points that serve to load the next environment. Yes, even Hyrule field in other Zeldas was little more than a stretched "room", skinned as an open air field. Even the first NES Zelda that some consider open is not an open world game in the sense of today's open world games. It's screen transitions are essentially loading transitions. It merely doesn't block you from travelling anywhere by means of items, like other Zeldas.

For all of the issues Skyward Sword has, it's still one of the best games of its generation and totally deserves its score. In fact, if it wasn't called Zelda but a new IP instead, it woud have probably fared better critically.

All the Zelda games are open world

nah, only by some kind of semantic super-literal definition of the genre that no one actually uses. They are all heavily gated (except maybe ALBW), and the presence of an overworld/hub area does not make a game open-world. That's like saying Metroid is an open-world series (fitting).

It's the same kind of literalism that leads to claims like "aren't all games where you play a character role-playing games". I mean, maybe you could argue that from a literalist perspective, but it also renders the label useless.

You think SS would have fared better than a 93 critically if it wasn't a Zelda game? Can I have what you're having because that shit is strooooooooong

The whole "Skyward Sword is shit" meme is so tiresome. It was a great game, especially when it came out.

I think this is extremely true. Zelda gets a lot of leeway because of it's pedigree in some ways, but it also has a ton of baggage and expectations baked in. I am curious how people would have responded to a new IP with the same mechanics and puzzles that Skyward Sword had.

Hebra Mountains is a really fun area
Gerudo Highlands on the other hand is such a joke, easily the worst zone in the game, what were they thinking

Yeah, should have had a Gerudo Valley kicking in the old music and then slowly see the landscape change from dry, wet to a bit of snow.

A village near the
Yiga Hideout
. Felt like they just tear gerudo in two pieces, because limitations.

probably the climbing game in the northeast of death mountain. you should have stamina max, though and the level 2 set of the climbing gear

there is a village there?

It doesn't exactly work all of the time. See: Starfox Zero, Triforce Heroes, etc.

Wind Waker is also an open world, there are no loads in the overworld.

Fuck that Deer Hunting minigame in Hateno Village. Waste 5 arrows which costs 20 rupees? only get 5 rupees in reward!

Assuming you found the first one where most players find the first one, here's the remaining

I've been insanely close to two of these and somehow missed them. Fuck.

Also, I got the
Master Sword
last night. Holy hell that area was gorgeous, but it felt like my Switch was running at like, 15 FPS.

I have to disagree in this case. I feel like the Zelda name really propped it up higher than it otherwise would have been. Game's got a 93 on metacritic, that's huge.

When I play that game I just don't see the Nintendo level of quality. There's good stuff, obviously, but there's a lot of stuff in there that brings down the overall experience. If it wasn't a Zelda game I don't think I'd have even finished it.

Is there a way to get screenshots off of your Switch without an SD card or posting them directly to Twitter or FB?

I could not possibly disagree more. I would never have forgiven the Tadtones or Imprisoned bullshit in any game without Zelda in the title.

I'm finally done with the game. It took me around 50 hours to beat it and 20 more to find all the shrines. I thought I would go for the 100% completion rate but the requirements seem insane and unfortunately, my shrine quest log is bugged so I don't even know if I could do it.

I have mixed feelings about the game. The first hour was awe-inspiring, then I started to become very frustrated by several gameplay elements but by the 10 hour mark I finally got into a rhythm and I fell in love with Breath of the Wild. But after finishing it... I got the same feeling I had after beating MGSV. The story really just goes nowhere. I liked what they did with Zelda in the flashbacks but none of that really pays off. The combat never felt completely right and the technical issues on the Wii U frustrated me in some spots.

It certainly is a great game but this might but one of the very few times when a Zelda game is not going to be my GOTY. BotW is one of the very best open worlds I've ever explored but overall, I think I prefer the old Zelda formula. More concise and with better puzzles, dungeons, combat and story imo.

My rankings for the 3D Zeldas:
1) Majora
2) Ocarina
3) Skyward Sword (Yes, I know. I'm not blind to its flaws but the dungeons are godly. And Groose.)
4) Twilight Princess
5) Breath of the Wild
6) Wind Waker

So yeah, I applaud Nintendo for this successful reinvention of the Zelda series but I didn't really connect with it and I doubt I'll replay it as much as the other games. Still, I'm glad so many people are in love with Zelda again, it's nice to see. But I do hope Nintendo will do some adjustments to this new formula in the future, there's a lot to improve.

This is unrelated to Breath of the Wild, but something i always wondered. Am I the only one who in A Link to the Past, always did Misery Mire before the Ice Palace? Reason being is at the end of Ice Palace, you essentially have to backtrack across most of the dungeon to hit the switch, allowing you to push a block down to the lower level, then move it on to a switch. If you do Misery Mire first, and get the Cane of Somaria, you can just create a block and move it.

Am I the only one who ever did this?

l think it's inane console war garbage. Maybe Nintendo games tend to review well because Nintendo makes good games? lf anything l think recent games like Tropical Freeze or Splatoon were underrated.

trpoical freeze, yes absolutely. that was still prime time for the whole "it's a good game but is it a good Wii U game" nonsense.

splatoon honestly got the reviews it deserved at the time of review. it's in my top 10 all time, mind you, but when it released reviewers only had access to like 2 modes and 5-6 maps. the content rollout strategy was great but day 1 reviews had to review what was there day 1.

Only started playing Sunday and just got to Zoras Domain. The trek through the hills and river made me reminisce of the same trip in Ocarina of Time... Only that trip lasted two minutes instead of half an hour. Also, I had forgotten how low rez the screen is on the Wii U controller. So bad.

I want to be stingy with Ancient Arrows and only use them against Guardians, but there's an odd satisfaction using them to vaporize any other enemy.

Lizalfos being reptilian bastards swerving around facing Stasis + and Ancient Arrows fired by a 5 shot Lynel Bow, dunno

After almost 50 hours, I beat the main storyline. Completion rate:
13.97%. Well fuck.

Sweet baby Zelda, that was fantastic. Sure, there are a few points on which the game can improve, but those small imperfections don't influence the entire experience. What an adventure. Its really hard to search the right words now, but this was the most fun I had with a videogame in quite some time.

Rito Village

There's a lady fighting with her husband. She asks for a Baked Apple and gives you 100 Rupees for it. Says she'll buy more baked apples, the more you bring the more she pays. 50 at a time netted me 500 rupees, you can literally build a fire behind her and bake as many as you want 5 at a time.

Cutting off Guardian's legs is pretty satisfying.

It is a shame that they lose their intimidating factor after you realise that you can just reflect their beams at them.

Just wondering if anyone has paid the
50k rupees Bolson asks for the house in Hateno before bumping his asking price down to 3k
?

Wait...by the terms some seem to be using for "open-world," doesn't that disqualify most of the GTA games by default? You are literally gated from entry to other districts by game logic. Sure, you CAN find your way there most of the time, but it is clearly not intended for you to be there, as there is practically nothing available for you to do.

It should be 98 at least. One of the best experiences I've had in 3D gaming.

the official guide lied about the location of To Quomo Shrine

It's under the mountain but the guide tells you that it's near the top of the mountain.

Skyward Sword was always bad and if you like it you like a bad thing.

SS is an oddball because the characters are good, the story is good, the graphics are good, the music is good, and it's an important game for the lore... but I just didn't really find it all that fun. There were a number of tedious filler things in the game, and the controls, while novel, kind of overstayed their welcome by mid game. It wants to be a good game, but there's some hurdles there. The water shrine temple, though, that's a really, really awesome Zelda dungeon. I wish it was in a better game

I think it's the weakest of the 3D Zeldas.

SS < WW (even if it is one of my favorite games ever) < TP (replaying the HD version made me like this game more) < Ocarina < BotW. And yea, I can't really place Majora's Mask. It's a bit different than the other games and it feels almost like a spin off. But if I had to place it, I'd probably put it under Ocarina, even if I like it more than Ocarina, Ocarina is just such an important game to the series. Although Ocarina 3D > MM 3D. I don't know, I just didn't care for MM 3D for whatever reason.

Ok wtf is going on.

Spoilers

i just followed Oki all the way to the shrine in the trials, activated the terminall, got the chest, activated the alter, but it still shows that I need to follow Oki

I know I'm lagging hard (almost 50 hours and not even one dungeon found), so I assume everyone knows you get random stat increases when cooking?
