Yuck, that's what I was afraid of. Any other game would get slammed in the reviews for this. Nonetheless, I shall push on and see what these 10/10s are all about. Not very impressed thus far (don't even get me started on the awful durability system, or the tedious-as-all-hell cooking system).

The great plateau is limiting progression, after getting the paraglider more options open up. This includes getting more durable weapons and shields.

I must be blind because I dont remember seeing anything. Let me try again.

Is it a time of day thing?

It helps if you look at it in the day, but it's not tied to the time of day. And obviously if it snows the image kinda blurs, so look at when it's bright.

Man, people don't even need to be conservative with combat in this game... kill one thing, pick up its weapon and then bludgeon the next thing to death with what you just picked up. When you see the "weapon is almost dead" indicator on screen, throw your weapon at a dude and there's a chance that the explosion will cause him to drop his weapon, upon which you just continue to mash buttons.

unless the thing has a shield and then mashing buttons only destroys your weapon

i doubt other non action games would be slammed for not having combat on par with action/action adventure games

anyway, game is all about exploration and "emergent gameplay"..it may not be your cup of coffee, you would not be the first.

Some mild costume/armor spoilers ahead:

its insane how much two or three stamina wheels, combined with the upgraded stealth and climbing suits change the game

Sprinting around the world at night and hopping up tall climbs in seconds. Then glide over to the next point of interest. Then stealthily take out a camp while they sleep. Then hop up the nearby mountain. And glide again etc.

I can't get over how much fun I'm having just doing this. I wonder how many of the people who complain about slow travel times are just putting all their orbs into hearts

You probably saw it but didn't process what you're seeing. Also think, how can that solution lead to a shrine?

Found it. I feel so stupid :)

Thanks guys. I love these riddles. I cant believe it took so long for it to click despite staring at that exact thing for so long. Wow lol.

I don't think that's quite my mindset. I'm just not yet seeing this masterpiece of a game that so many others have praised to the heavens. I thought for sure it would knock me off my feet, but it just hasn't happened yet. Right now it feels clunky, tedious, and strangely barren. Again, I'll continue pushing on to see what awaits. If it doesn't live up to the hype, believe me, it would be far from the first game on that list.

You have no invincibility frames when dodging compared to most other games. As a result, spacing is important when engaging in melee combat. IBut if you perfect dodge you get the flurry rush command. You can also parry all attacks with your shield if you're good enough with the timing.

Upward strikes need to be dodged with a side-step and sideways strikes with a back-step. Sometimes you can even leap above the strike with a backstep if the attack is low enough (which is most of the time the case).

Otherwise, there are dozens of other options of engaging with enemies.

3-Star Knight Set's so OP that I'm gonna put my foot down and use it for tough enemies/sections only. I don't exactly love the look of it so for regular travelling it'll be my 3-star Hylian Hood & Trousers and the Champion's Tunic.

Your concerns of weapons, food will soon mean nothing to you as you get better weapons and more slots. You'll be complaining how you can't carry all of these great tools. At one point you will get some help with health and cooking becomes a rarity unless you want to cook or need to cook for very specific occasions. Combat, it's like Souls games in the sense that you block, strike, party, bow and arrow sans magic and the fact that some enemies will annihilate you with one or two hits if you stand there like a tree. The combat is not a bitten mash fest a la Musou type games. There is a method. It's just not based on Devil May Cry comboing a slickness. Combat is actually really creative.

What screwed me up with that one for so long was that the first time I got there an actual bird was flying in the direction the clue said and I took it literal for a long time. :lol

Wait, you found all but one of the memories without talking to the painter at each stable? I can't even imagine doing it that way.

yep, just pure observation, comparison and a bit of luck for one that i just stumbled upon while traveling.,.it was the first one too,had no idea what that glowing spot was.

actually it's not really hat bad, most of those give you landmarks so that you can locate the place on your own..except the forest, which is totally just a forest with no particular feature.

anyway..so yoiu search for painters at stables to get the info?you must get the right stable to get the info or ou can just go to kakariko village an ask there?

I figured out this damn shrine on Tabantha frontier.
I made a campfire on the plate when the heart-shaped sunlight hit it.
But I never got an in-game clue. Just kept trying things. Thinking in reverse, I guess the clue is something like
"warm the heart,"
but I really have no idea. Can somebody tell me what the clue is? I want to know how you're intended to come up with this solution.

You get a different clue at each stable.

You go up to the heart-shaped rock in Rito Village spire, wait until its shadow casts a heart-shaped light on the shrine platform thingy, then shoot a fire arrow or something at it.

Yea once you get max defense like this

C7PnNPnVAAMAYPA.jpg:small

and then eat defense up food you can just laugh at every enemy in the game

I feel like the extra 4 defense and seeing enemy HP is not worth losing the set bonus.

unless the thing has a shield and then mashing buttons only destroys your weapon

They don't always have shields tho

And even if some of them do, this doesn't mean you can't just go HAM on everyone else in the immediate area... by that point, you've picked up like several weapons and can hack away at a shield dude anyway just for the lawlz or bully them with any number of resources you have in your rune abilities.

Aggressive play can work assuming you're using all the tools.

I can even go in with great sword class weapons and then make myself safe by jump cancelling the recovery animation.

(can't jump cancel jump attack tho from what I recall)

Well, my way is faster and easier. But what's the clue?

YES! I thought I should watch and see where that bird would go so I did and there was nothing. I was so stumped lol.

|OT3| It Was Right Under Our Nose The Whole Time

Curious question as a complete newcomer:
Does the combat drastically improve at some point?

I'm about 3-4 or so hours in, and thus far it's been completely abysmal by modern standards. The lock-on system is complete shit, and the dodge maneuver feels like something yanked out of an N64 game. It just doesn't play well at all.

Please tell me this isn't how it works from start to finish.

Is there some new refined lock-on tech that I don't know about? It's a standard lock-on.

I did that three giant brothers quest.
First stole the orbs, did the shrine. Afterwards killed the Hinox. The only damage I sustained was due to collecting honey from the bees.

Might have been more challenging early in the game :P

And down goes Ganon! Cool if easy final battle. Ending was a bit lacking, but typical for Zelda games. Still have lots to do. I did the 4 divine beats, found all the memories (with guide help, I hate searching for photographed areas or tracking the guy down at stables for more specific hints), climbed all the towers to reveal the whole map, got the master sword etc. But I only did 43 shrines and found 26 korok seeds so far, and I'm sure I missed tons of side stuff. Play activity list has it at 50 hours or more. Probably closer to 55 as it's been a 50 since this morning and I played a bunch today.

Anyway, time to explore more! Glad I got this and Horizon done this week while off from teaching (spring break). Mass Effect up next. Expectations down a bit from impressions, but I love the series and still looking forward to it.

Will be picking up BOTW and exploring often for a long while though I expect.

Who else is part of the 100+ hours club?

Approaching 105 now. 1 dungeon, 70+ shrines and a few dozen side quests left to go. So many unexplored areas in the map too.

70 shrines down.

50 to go...

I may never do this.

So apparently my WiiU gamepad is dead, how many dungeon that force you to use the gyro are there? I want to know how much of the game I'm locked out of.

(Fuck you WiiU, glad you're gone, btw).

later in the game, hinox are a joke

just glide on their belly

charge an attack, which will also unleash urbosa's thunders

if it isn't already dead, just whack at him while he wakes up

profit!

i have found around 90 shrines and only 2 or 3 had gyro controls

Exploring
the Gerudo Highlands
right now. I am unsure why, but I absolutely love ice areas and this place is no exception to that.

I'm sure everyone else has already stumbled onto this but when it happened I actually laughed out loud at the absurdity of it. I was fighting some Stalfos-lizards and
my weapon broke, so I grabbed one of their arms off the ground and threw it towards another. I seriously started giggling like a madman when it turned out their arms behave exactly like boomerangs, and it flew back towards me after hitting the enemy. It was so perfect considering the lizards were the first time I saw and played with boomerangs in this game
.

Yeah, not really. There's quirks of physics that's really interesting, but everything else... not so much

I got the Master Sword, which means I probably did - I don't know, 40 or so shrines? A good portion of them were single room ones where you just go directly to get the thing, another good portion was "A X test of Strength". There were a couple really neat ones, but most of them just felt like they wanted to put it in there because the dungeons were so short and they needed filler. I don't know, there's just so much in this game that felt like it was "Welp... that should be good enough". Even if it didn't have the high standard of A Link to the Past or Ocarina of Time as a backbone, I would still say that it missed its mark.

And as for exploration being key, it's not too hot on that either. There's some great vistas, but with combat being as bland and useless as it is and the world being so incredibly empty, there's really not much to explore.

This is... Hmm.. I don't know how to respond to someone saying g that there's not much to explore...

I mean, I agree there could be more variety to like... Idk shrine entrances and the aesthetics inside or something. But there's so much to find in this game that isn't even just shrines or korok seeds. I'm constantly surprised by fun things that exist or combat scenarios. I've laughed out loud with sheer wonderment so many times.

Idk. Whatever. If it's not for you my instinct is you're not focusing on the most fun things but maybe you just don't enjoy those things. To be fair 80+ hours in, I still enjoy just climbing up a new mountain and seeing the view even if there's nothing at the top.

Well, my way is faster and easier. But what's the clue?

It's a song you get from a Rito girl at the village.

"The pride of the Rito, pillar in the sky,
its heart lights up when the sun is high.
The heart shines upon a path not whole,
but a warming flame can stir its soul."

Wow, Thunderblight is just straight up Dark Souls bullshit. First time I felt like throwing the Switch against the wall.

I got stuck in an island
yes that one
. Then my bro visited, said I've been playing too much, and took the console away...

I'll probably get it next weekend.

My current Switch log has just came in at over 130 hours with all 120 Shrines completed. Best Zelda game since Wind Waker so far (though I had higher hopes for the narrative thus far). After how disappointed I was with Twilight Princess and Skyward Sword, I'm having a feeling this one will digest much better. About damn time.

Still have a perceived two dungeouns left before I think it'll finish up, but thought I'd toss my impressions in one OT at least.

Hit 88 shrines at about the 70 hours mark. Until now I've been able to get by mostly just by looking at the map and exploring areas where I didn't have any shrines. But the map looks pretty filled out now despite me still having 30+ shrines to go. I might just bite the bullet and start looking some of them up. No chance in hell I'm 100%ing this game anyways. I have 76 korok seeds and I'll pass on looking for 824 more of them.

I'm also 70 hours in and I just figured out what to do with the random stacks of metal blocks you find. Definitely missed out on a few korok seeds just passing those by when I saw them.

Thank you.

i found it easy enough

run when he teleports around the place

when it stops for attacking, stasys him

whack it like it's out of fashion

rinse and repeat

Honestly, I'm not a big fan of shrines. I prefer most 3D indie puzzle games I've played to zelda puzzles. There never is enough building on mechanics and too many obvious visual hints. Usually the hardest part is remembering you have an ability you haven't used in 10 hours of gameplay.

But I do love exploring the overworld to find them.

I'm already at 120 hours lol. Only 12 shrines left and Hyrule castle.

I want to say I'll be done by 120 hours but then again I spent 5 hours just screwing around so who knows.

I spent 160 hours on XCX. I wonder if I'll spend more with BoTW.

But I do love running arround trying to find them.

Some of them are easy but there are some that will make you feel like a genius. That 5 minute confidence boost is addictive which is why I dig the shrines.

For a lot of them, my thought process went from "i have no idea what to do" > "i wonder if this will work" > "theres no way it will work" > "holy shit it worked". It feels great!

I do wish there were more multi room shrines. Those were my favorite.
