What does Microsoft need to do to make Xbox successful again?

new ip. i want them to create something other than fps/tps, take some damn risks. sony produce games like littlebigplanet, heavy rain, modnation racers etc. and although they may not be great sellers they offer variety.

ms strong suit for me has always been multiplayer so as long as they keep making gears/halo i will always buy their console even though halo is pretty crap now so yeah just gears. come to think of it, i might not buy their next console considering gears is now on pc. hmm

for fps yes its true halo is no longer the premier multiplayer experience but in the tps realm gears is unmatched, nothing even comes close. uncharted is ok as it tlou but they are not in the same league as gears.

Tlou mp is much better than Gears mp imo. Infact it's my favorite 3rd person mp since Socom2. I agree about UC mp I'm not a fan.

First-person shooting is 343's bread and butter - they are excellent at the genre. Perfect Dark 3 is an old Rare IP, and hasn't had a game in almost a decade, and having someone of 343's stature make a new FPS game that isn't Halo and is a totally different IP would be fantastic.

If we ever see Perfect Dark again I'm hoping it's not another FPS. Gives us third person so we can decently see Joanna this time.

I think MS had 2 MP games that were Hits. They never necessarily focused more on MP games, although I think they are now. Even last gen Ps3 had Mag,Warhawk,Starhawk,Uncharted resistance,Killzone,Socom among other.

So MS focused more on MP and Sony Single player is really a myth. As I said MS just had to Major Multiplayer hits.

I disagree. The original Xbox with its four controller ports, LAN, and Xbox Live was major during its time. Sony and Nintendo weren't close to that. The success of the 360 can now be seen in the multiplayer/online features of all current gen consoles.

Gaming wise you have Microsoft's own franchises (some still existing, others old) and a mix of third party franchises that became big thanks to Xbox's multiplayer system features (like Call of Duty). The brand was far more multiplayer focused than Nintendo and Sony during the previous decade.

When it's actually Sony who's actually trying to claw it's way into survival right now? I think the list warriors kinda forget the world of shit Sony as whole has been in the last few years. Didn't they actually started turning a profit like yesterday?
They have been rebranding everything "PlayStation" recently with VUE, VR, Vita and PS Now and like everything they are doing is tanking.

Except the PS4 thank goodness.

But who knows if all of this shit will even work out for them in the long run. Everything they do elsewhere was tanking but their phones are making a turnaround to profit and their cameras are fine, hopefully the Spiderman movie helps the movie division.

Being worried for MS is like being worried for Facebook. It's nonsensical. No one needs to "win".

Also people forget these games take a long time to cook, after the whole TV debacle happened Phil took over the focus seems to be games with him already stating multiple times that games will be announced closer to release.

Console isn't good enough by PC gamer standards? What the fuck does that even mean?

MS puts games on PC. PC Gamers don't like "port quality"...no sale.
MS keeps games off PC. PC Gamers don't like "console quality"...no sale.

Yea, your argument truly makes sense. -_-

The console they offer now can hardly do 1080p/30fps. You're wondering why PC gamers wouldn't buy said console? I'm not arguing anything, I'm telling you why people don't want to buy their console.

Your initial argument was "MS PC ports are shit, so PC gamers should just buy an Xbone" so I don't even know why I wrote this response tbh.

The thing is that Playstation is one of Sony's most profitable divisions right now and with the CEO being former PS head, it's one of Sony's to priorities right now whereas the same can't be said with Xbox.

I'm talking about games with Multiplayer. From what I can gather MS had no greater focus on them. They simply had 2 of the biggest last gen Not more.

2) Rare should become a new IP factory - there should be a mandate that for the next 6 years they do not make any sequels. Give them the time they need to polish Sea of Thieves to excellence. Once that's done, it's on to the next one (new IP). If Sea of Thieves is a hit, then contract a talented 2nd/3rd-party developer to do the ground work on a sequel, while Rare works on some new IP. At the same time, leverage Rare's old IPs, like Perfect Dark 3 (giving that to 343) or Banjo Kazooie 3 (give that to Playtonic). Rare can provide input/leadership on those projects, like they did with Killer Instinct.

Heavily disagree on this. I absolutely don't like this sentiment. At all. Rare needs to work on both new and old IPs.

I missed this in my original reply.

You literally just said that the PlayStation VR and PlayStation Now -- which are, respectively, a product and a service created specifically to play PlayStation games -- were "rebranded" with the PlayStation name. ... Despite being called that since the day they were announced.

My head actually hurts trying to understand how you typed that.

Easy, give me a powerful console with also a steady stream of Japanese exclusives or third party titles with some decent 1st party output as well.

Also let me play any physical OG Xbox and Xbox 360 title I already own, from any region and I'd be sold day 1. That would be giving what us gamers have wanted all along.

I'd play my Scorpio all the time if I could play Metal Wolf Chaos and some Cave shmups throughout the 360 era.

I mean, it's fine to want things but none of this is going to happen unfortunately, and it's certainly not going to get Xbox back into the position it was in last generation.

Best thing they could do is put Gears and Halo on 6-7 year cycles instead of a standard 3, allowing those teams to try new things between releases and give those old IP a much needed rest.

Both series still have a lot of fans, so it makes no sense to dump them entirely, but I feel like they could make them on a once-a-generation cycle and pretty much everyone would be fine with that as long as updates were delivered for the first 2-3 years.

This has to be a joke post

Yes, it isn't likely but it could happen and I agree that it wouldn't be any real indicator of new games, I'm just saying standout features like that would help their cause. They need to win back gamers like Sony did with the PS4.

Since we're on the subject of MS changing things up and taking risks, would anyone else want to see a Halo Prime? I haven't played a Halo game since 4, but I definitely saw hints of Metroid in the campaign at times. And doesn't 343i have some former senior senior Retro employees, including the lead designer of the Prime games?

I'd love to see this happen. No idea where the story is anymore for Halo, but surely they can come up with some reason for Chief to be alone on some mysterious isolated planet? Didn't he go AWOL anyway? They can it more open-ended and seemless instead of the rigid mission structure Halo usually has. It would be a great way to change things up in the Halo formula, and it's not like some other certain company (Nintendo if you couldn't guess) is making these type of games anymore.

*bullshit*

This is nonsense on the level of saying Microsoft is doomed because the Xbox is underperforming.

All games with MP support PC crossplay. Allow for kb/m.

Those who feel it's unfair can get a kb/m.

If I could play Fifa with my console friends they'd probably get an xbox instead of PS4 upgrade. Only play sports and shooters really.

I think the only thing they really can do is what they did with the 360.

Launch their next gen console a year before the competition and at a cheaper price.

Sometimes the best way forward is to look at your past successes. IMHO, Microsoft need to bring back the "all about games" feeling it had on the Xbox and early years of Xbox 360. Sure, it's great the Xbox One can play all my media, but that isn't why l choose a console. It's the games and the variety of games it has.

Xbox - Appearance and Design

The look of the console/dashboard felt like it was future tech and game oriented. Sure, consoles at this point weren't seen as media hubs too but even today this thing looks like a beast. The inclusion of 4 controller ports also gave it a leg up fo CO-OP play. Xbox Live was also well thought out and was (from memory) a painless experience to play MP against your friends. Even Local CO-OP/MP was well supported and easy to do (If you had the right cables :-p).

Xbox - Games

The games were genre defining (re: Halo, PGR) and visually stunning. They also covered a WIDE range of genres as can be seen above. There was a unique and often exclusive experience for everyone.

Xbox 360 - Appearance and Design

While not as bulky/beastly as the original, the first 360 design still looked like a games console. The "blades" dashboard also gave the impression of speed and game first. Xbox Live also grew from the original Xbox and it's offering of Arcade titles further increased the appeal.

Xbox 360 - Games

It's probably the fanboy inside me but no console has matched the 360 in terms of games. It simply had a little something for everyone.

Xbox One

To me, the design of the Xbox One is something that was destined to fit into the living room. Even the dashboard. If they want to change my opinion of how Microsoft see the Xbox brand, they need to remove the advertising and clutter. Show me you see the xbox as a games machine, not an all in one device first.

People forget this so much. Was a PS guy but when Halo came out I remember playing countless hours with my brother and cousins.
LAN was awesome to us. Two TV's seperate rooms. Playing single player mode on normal, heroic, and legendary. OG Xbox was such a sleeper and great console.

Ripping CD's for custom mixes! Anyone remember "New Legends"?

Xbox was a fully realized console. Humble and powerful.

No, my initial argument was that MS releasing their games on PC aren't going to move a lot of people to not get their console. You made a comment on PC ports are being shit as a response. I basically stated that your point against mine doesn't make sense. People who want the console are going to get it, people who don't, aren't, just because the availability of their games are on both won't move a lot of people one way or the other since people buy consoles for different reasons.

Definitely agree. I think if they play up the Scorpio's power as "having the best versions of games" in addition to new exclusive software, they would be headed in the right direction.

See and it's clear to me that that's what Microsoft is finally doing. Nintendo bowed out of the horserace after the GameCube and decided to focus on what they're good at, playful reinvention. Microsoft, buoyed by a good headstart with the 360, has been trying to catch up to PlayStation for the past decade and a half. They finally realized they're not an entertainment company so they can never really catch up. Microsoft has great creative talent at their research division, but they're never going to be allowed to take center stage in the company, it's just not what they are. It has to bubble up and get commissioned to death until another division is allowed to bring it to market when the market has already shifted. Their corporate structure will always make them fail at being an entertainment enterprise. They're a services business. So now they're trying to make services out of games. Time will tell whether they succeed, but it at least finally fits their DNA.

This thread reads like 'what does Microsoft have to do to make Xbox like PlayStation'. When the truth is they can't.

More importantly, they shouldn't.

Microsoft's failure with the Xbox One is not the lack of exclusive new IPs, or Halo 5's relatively lackluster reception. Rather, it's that it has allowed Sony to catch up in terms of online functionality.

If you want to play Destiny, Call of Duty, and Madden online, Xbox should be the best platform for you to play on. That's how it was for the 360. Unfortunately for Microsoft, that's no longer the case.

  • OG Xbox backwards compatibility.
  • Regular single player expansions for their big games, only the FH games have done this.
  • D4 Season 2.
  • Fix MCC.
  • 60fps FH2 and FH3 on Scorpio.
  • Have Rare make Fable 4 after SOT.

Okay this is more my personal wish list than anything else but whatever.

  • More first party games, get all of their studios working on something
  • Pay for the development of more third party games to get more exclusives
  • Free, ad supported online play (Think like those Source game servers that play movie ads between rounds, Gold removes ads)
  • Easier menu navigation, I know they're working on it but just dumb it down even more
  • Xbox OG backwards compatibility
  • Good price for the Scorpio

Thanks guys!

While l would love some of the features others have mentioned (OG Xbox compatibility, revival of older Microsoft IP like Motocross Madness, Midtown Madness and Age Of Empires), they need to change the public's opinion on the Xbox brand. Pandering to the current Xbox fanbase isn't going to do that.

l believe Microsoft have the opportunity with Scorpio to bring the xbox back to it's powerful, technology driven roots.

I think MS have become humbled. Everything they have been currently doing is correcting the Xbone ship.

I just wish they would invest in more exclusive IPs. I know its expensive but it will pay off for them.

I'm looking forward to Scorpio's power but I couldn't care less about its backlog.

They got themselves back on the right track when they dropped Kinect and a bunch of the other XB1 launch baggage. Now they just need to retool which they seem to trying to do. Just gonna have to wait and see.

1) Revive your old, valuable, IP with big support behind them. A true Banjo Kazooie sequel that was of high quality could move units.
2) Fund 3-4 brand new, high quality IPs in genres you aren't already heavily invested in. Let's get people who aren't Halo / Forza / Gears fans back interested in Microsoft again.
3) Abandon this micro-transaction / games as a service approach. It will make money, yes, but gaining new players and keeping them becomes infinitely harder when you're not offering variety.

The thing is that Playstation is one of Sony's most profitable divisions right now and with the CEO being former PS head, it's one of Sony's to priorities right now whereas the same can't be said with Xbox.
Thank you for an actual counterpoint. Yeah your right on that one for sure, it's kind of a given really with MS being mostly Windows and even Cloud services at the moment.

Who knows if that's a good or bad thing really, Sony's own great PS2 era came when they had so much else going well for them.

Sure all divisions need to do well for the ability to sustain themselves, but It would be nice to have something to fall upon as a business if one division goes bad. Hell PlayStation itself helped Sony so much in this fight for a comeback.

This time it was PlayStation but if it was the TV business that helped the whole of Sony therefore PlayStation alive that would be great as well.

Do more differents ip.Tired of halo, gow and forza. Invest in third party exclusives like in the 360 era.Exclusive games.

They need to get back ahead of the curve again. The Live service was truly groundbreaking for the console space in the OG and early 360 days.

VR is the next big tech and it feels like the train is leaving the station. Sure, it's still early, but Sony, Valve and Oculus are already taking in lessons from the 1st gen tech. I'm not even sure where MS is at with it. Hoping Scorpio will impress on the VR front.

Also, if I'm a paying customer, PLEASE cool it on the fucking ads. Ads on my dashboard, ads in my Windows, just knock it off.

I mean, that first paragraph simply isn't true. Maybe 8-10 years ago, sure. Now? No.

Obviously, Sony has room for improvement. No one said anything about them being perfect. They aren't fighting for survival and everything aside from PS4 isn't tanking.

Perhaps, toning down the hyperbole would garner better responses.

Some other ideas or expanding on previously mentioned ideas l had:

TV Show adaptation

Something that could broaden the Xbox appeal is to expand the games portfolio to popular TV shows. The xbox and xbox 360 had titles such as Buffy, Dark Angel, Evil Dead, Family Guy, Lost. So, these are my current TV show examples and the accompanying genre:

Game Of Thrones - RPG
West World - RPG
NCIS - Adventure
Stranger Things - Action/Adventure
Law & Order - Adventure
Daredevil - Action/Adventure
The Blacklist - Action/Adventure
Tough Mudder - Action (combat-less) MMO (Compete to be the best/fastest platformer)

Re-tool xbox live

Bring back the community feeling (currently it feels disconnected) with titles like 1 vs 100, simpler/quick xbox arcade titles that we can compete against friends with (hexic, uno, billiards, poker, revolt e.c.t). I know these titles are already there, but it just doesn't feel as in your face as it was on the 360. It doesn't have that community feeling.

GOG integration

I believe GOG have the sourcecode to most titles. Surely they could make Xbox compatible with the majority of older PC titles on GOG? I feel like this could be a great feature. Imagine playing Sim City or Blood on your PC, then continuing play on the Xbox One! Mouse/Keyboard compatibility would also need to happen l imagine.

I don't know if Microsoft truly understand the "games as art" approach to design that Sony and Nintendo do. Both of those companies are willing to sink a lot of money and years into projects that are somewhat risky and unique.

I feel like Microsoft just abandons a title instantly if it either doesn't have the potential for widespread appeal or doesn't cater to their existing audience. If they're not able to churn out sequels every other year like a factory, they're not interested.

They need to refocus their efforts on diversifying their lineup and giving the developers the money, time, and resources to see ambitious projects to their fruition. Will they do that? I'm not convinced. It's not something that happens overnight. Nintendo and Sony have been cultivating their studios for generations and allow them all to spread their wings a bit.

I'd love, for instance, if Halo went back to the roots of what made the original so great -- that sense of wonder and exploration. I feel the series needs to have a substantial 'BOTW' styled shakeup that brings back the atmosphere of the original rather than to turn the series into some story driven blockbuster drama about master chief.

Top Bottom
