What does Microsoft need to do to make Xbox successful again?

Hard to find a studio of Bungie's pedigree out there looking for work and bringing in as promising a product as Halo or Epic with Gears. Most of the studios in the West are set. They can and should look in Japan but as Rex said, they are not looking to buy.

It can't be that difficult to identify some talent, finance them and encourage them. Put a team together, pay them well, be flexible. That's how you grow a large business, you buy in talent, take it from your competitors, as well as trying to get the best out of your own staff and junior employees. But as you pointed out, they don't seem to want to make that investment.

So isn't the question not "What can they do?" but "Why aren't they doing it?".

Some solid exlcusives that gives us something we can get on other consoles. They are getting slaughtered on the this front. If the exclusives from the competition weren't good, then this wouldn't matter. The problem is that these exclusives are at the top of their respective genre - even better than third party offerings.

CD project red fit the bill.
Cyberpunk 2077 suppose to have multiplayer online feature, MS need RPG studio, cd project red is top of the genre, MS have a lot oversea money to spend.
This would be one purchase make the biggest headline, restore confidence to first party, it make most sense.
What's CD project red market value currently?

CDPR pride themselves on their independence don't they?
They wouldn't sell out to be then under MS or anyone else's heel, especially now that they are in the upper echelons of developers.

I'd imagine they'd be forced to churn out Witcher games until the end of time.

It's over 1.5 billion dollars and they're not for sale. ;)

Bring back Fable as a single player open world game. This was a well loved pillar of the Xbox and they fucked it up.
Rename the Coalition to something else and let them make whatever they want (I am thinking Shangheist).
Invest in first party studios and let them make cool new stuff you can't get anywhere else.
Never fuck up again the way they fucked up with Xbox One (DRM, Kinect spying, price, hubris etc).

It's probably too late to turn around during the few years that Xbox One and Scorpio will have left but we'll see.

I don't have the numbers but I think XBO sold 7..7.5M last year. Really low number if its true. We don't even have to mention PS4 to see they are doing bad and worse, if Slim didn't have the momentum in US they would sell even less.

Lol so if Slim had sold less than what it actually has sold, Microsoft would have sold less Xbox Ones. No shit Sherlock.

In order of importance: A machine that is priced like a PS4 Pro or slightly more expensive that plays multiplatform games better. A strong first party lineup. Exclusives not on Windows.

Lmao What? They pride themselves on independence and your saying selling out is a good fit? Yeah ok.

Not to mention they'd become a Witcher mill and we'd probably never see Cyberpunk if it did happen. The Polish government is helping them out, they're like a national treasure over there. I highly doubt MS would give them the same respect.

Hit me. Would love to hear them.

Hmm...

Lack of third parties again.

Only Zelda which is also available on the Wii U that looks virtually identical to it visually making me wonder how much powerful the console is really.

Expensive hardware.

Hardware is noticeably underpowered again compared to the competition.

Hardware issues. Surely, they will be resolved like any newly launched console in a timely manner I am assuming, but that are still there.

A bunch of old ports from current generation systems that are more expensive.

Next high profile game will probably not hit until December 2017. Well, I guess Splatoon 2 and Mario Kart 8 count, but aren't those essentially ports?

Online infrastructure still not as vigorous as XBox One or PS4 after all of these years.

Charing for online play now that is unproven.

One NES or SNES game a month for paid online that will be taken away from you after a month while the competitors are giving several modern indie games and a few full retail titles.

Could have another proverbial drought incoming once people finish Zelda. Unless gamers gobble up Splatoon 2 and Mario Kart 8.

Then again, their marketing is much better than before and it's portable, so that could potentially help it pass Wii U numbers. I still think the Wii U had a much more impressive launch though. Hopefully, there will be surprises at E3.

CDPR is a studio that prides itself on its independence. they have no interest in being bought. The sooner people understand that some things simply aren't for sale the better of they'll be. Wishing doesn't make it so no matter how much you desire it to.

A Playstation 5 without backwards compatibility.

Lol, at the CDPR post, I think I've read this before in another thread, maybe from the same poster...not going to happen and it shouldn't happen. One of the last great Western devs for SP games does not deserve a major Pub at helm.

They need to emulate Sony from the PS3 days and put a shit load of effort into first-party development studios and exclusive software. New IPs, bring back dormant IPs, commission sequels for beloved games that didn't do especially well, and so on:

  • Reboot Perfect Dark entirely
  • Bring back Rallisport Challenge
  • Reboot Fable. Make it a bigger/broader game with the style and humour of the first game
  • Restart the cancelled Obsidian new IP
  • Make a new Starlancer or Freelancer
  • Commission a reboot of a classic Rare platformer - Conker or Banjo-Kazooie
  • Make a new Battletoads game for XBLA. I'd give it WayForward as they did a great job with Double Dragon Neon
  • 343 is a huge studio - about 500 employees, last I heard. Let a team of 100-150 work on a totally new IP with the same kind of budget and marketing they've give a tentpole
  • Restart development for Scalebound. Make it a single-player action RPG only. No pissing around with co-op modes
  • Commission Recore 2. Give it a three year development cycle and a better engine. make sure it's polished and content-complete
  • Commission Lost Odyssey 2
  • New third-person action adventure in the style of Splinter Cell or Hitman
  • Let Turn 10 make something new - let Forza rest for a year, while Forza Horizon keeps going
  • Make Ryse 2. If Crytek don't want to sell the IP then so be it, but the potential for a sequel is pretty great. Also get first refusal on publishing a third instalment
  • Make Sunset Overdrive 2. Details same as above
  • How about a swords & sorcery open world adventure like The Elder Scrolls, The Witcher 3 or Dragon's Dogma? It's an expensive genre but supremely popular right now
  • Fund and publish a new Ninja Gaiden

Make new IP, give internal studio freedom all sound good but it would take 3-4 years to see result, it doesn't guarantee success, it won't help them short term.
Cyberpunk is new IP, RPG with multiplayer, CD project Red best studio on single player narrative driven title, one move to fix all their problem short term and long term.
It only need money, much more possible for MS to pull this off than say fix Japanese publisher relation, less risky than hoping new internal IP to be successful.
It's cheaper than minecraft, have proven profitable IP, it will be easier pitch to investor than asking their factories stop making profitable titles for unproven new IP.

Sounds good to me.

I mostly agree with you. But to say the situation with Guilty Gear, Yakuza 0, Nioh, 999, Virtue's Last Reward, Persona 5, and Nier Automata is basically the same as PS4 getting Assassin's Creed 7, Black Ops 4, Battlefield 5, Madden, NBA2K, and GTA6 is ridiculous.

Here, I fixed it for you...
It's time to bury that infinite warchest mythos. MS is in the business to make money and not please fanboys and console warriors. They've burned money for 15 years and investors and MS-mother want to see some nice profit after all those years.

I think Turn 10 likes making Forza, I mean they seem to be car lovers in general. So to force them to make something else than that would be overbearing.

Granted I don't put that overbearingness above MS (they are willing to push for some shitty stuff), but I think it's better to just start a new studio that they let go and allow to to make what they like. Invest in younger developers, give college kids a chance and dare to take risks!

Playground games is making a new ip that will probably be xbox and pc exclusive.

Halo doesnt need a rest. 3 years is plenty between mainline titles.

Gears of War needs a reboot

My argument remains. They would become a Witcher mill and we all know how successful that's been for them (GoW, Halo, etc.) all undersold to previous entries in their own series. No not even that would make them "great again" (to me personally that means 360 era). If MS had hypothetically acquired CD (that wouldn't happen in any timeline) Cyberpunk isn't even a guarantee like you state. The multiplayer and online aspect of that game is getting huge government support.

Whats wrong with putting their games on windows 10
Console warriors going to console warrior.

What's the Condemned: Criminal Origins IP doing? Wasn't the first one an Xbox exclusive?

Let's forget the ending to the second one and dust off that game.

I'd go in for a Xbox One S for that.

Edit: Give be a rusted old pipe and some detective vision in first person.

I own it on steam so no? Console exclusive? I have no idea.

Basically listen to their fans....

  • Bring back old IPs...
  • Use Rare's extensive IP repertoire....
  • Stop making only Halos, Forzas and Gears... (give them more thought and time to be appreciated... it also increases the hype for a new game)
  • Invest on new games and franchises....
  • Take risks....

Scorpio sounds good but console power isn't everything...

I find it strange that so many people wants Microsoft to do what Sony already does. If that is what you want - just be happy with your Playstaion 4, I doubt you need another one.

Micosoft should aim for people not yet owning a console this generation. I think Game Pass might be a stroke of genius in getting that crowd interested.

I feel people here actually believe that Scorpio can out sell the One S. It cant and it wont. Microsoft needs to make sure their cheap console is cheap enough and it will sell. Bundle One S with Game Pass and Gold for $20-25 per month for a year and it will be everywhere.

Invest in at least 1 more AAA studio, one not tied down to an existing franchise, the only studio they have that aren't completely predictable is Rare and they're busy. Halo, Forza, Gears are great, but the people who care about those probably already have an Xbox, it's unlikely any of them will grow massively again and bring in a new audience.

I'm a new Xbox one owner and I went the Xbox route mostly because I associate Xbox and Xbox live with the best online console gaming which even if true doesn't mean much in the current landscape. I'd like to see them amp up there online and multiplayer stuff in multiple genres and really bridge that pc gap.

Game pass and a Netflix model in general is a brilliant move and a major appeal to me. Also mine craft cause of my kids, etc. Not sure copying Sony makes much sense, lack of differentiation.

Microsoft have some good dormant IP's they have done nothing with for years, the type which could make some good XBLA quality games if not AAA. This way they can knock out an extra 3 good exclusives per year for maybe $100 million investment.

There's loads of indie teams these days who they could contract to make them some stuff if they don't want to do it in house.

Banjo
Crimson Skies
Links Golf
Goldeneye Remaster!
Other Rare Stuff
Etc

They have some good stuff to go at to pad the lineup. Throw in a new IP or two and they are there.

At this point the words "xbox one" have been too tainted since the reveal for anyone of us to consider buying one, and this was a group of people who played countless hours of Halo 1/2/3.

If Scorpio was considered a whole new platform even with the exact same specs most of us would be more willing to jump in even if that makes no sense.

We're entering dream territory with that list, but if they could do just one or two things on it just to keep fans happy, it would go a long way. A new Banjo, another Fable or a new IP, as long as they're not service focused. I mean they had a deal with Platinum, who are known for making excellent single player games and still co-op had to be a part of it. Maybe that's just coincidental, but I couldn't shake the feeling that selling a Live subscription had to be there with MS publishing.

Just give us one exclusive AAA single player game to look forward to on Scorpio/One.

Apparently Goldeneye has lots of issues and licensing to be dealt with.... they already looked into it in the past...

Buuuut... if they could manage to deal with that and release a Goldeneye remake... oh boy... that would be awesome!!! Imagine the multiplayer with today's technology....

but with the smaller online community so at the end... PSN has greatly improve and probably on par with it and PC has millions of users, so you're probably right, it doesn't really mean anything in the long scheme.

I think new ips are great. MS should look into making new ips. The issue is they are already sitting on a trove of new ips from both their past and Rare. My advice:

  • Let Rare reboot Banjo as a $40 game made in UE4. Not unity. Stay away from Unity.
  • Comission a studio to reboot Fable. Make it bigger and keep what made the originals amazing. Good story and character dialogue and quest design is a must.
  • Get the Coalition to reboot Perfect Dark. Don't turn them into a Gears factory and I don't think it will be hard for them to pivot. Make it a 3rd person shooter more along the lines of Splinter Cell Conviction and Joanna can be more movable throughout the environment.
  • Get 343i to create something new or do a prequel to Halo and have it set during the forerunner/human war. Don't call it Halo directly.
  • Comission a studio to make Crimson Skies reboot and Mechassault. Halo Wars 2 is a great example of this.
  • Release some OG Xbox titles in HD with achievements.

Personally, I think they need to stake out some genres. Sony has JRPGs on lock so people that love JRPGs gravitate toward the PlayStation. I would take the opposite approach and try to make the system irresistible to people who love WRPGs. I would introduce two new major WRPGs, one fantasy and one science fiction, to hopefully make fans of the genre gravitate toward the Xbox. As for who would make them, I'm not sure there is an answer to that question. They would probably need to invest in a new studio.

I think the days of Halo spin-off series are over. They should still keep that franchise running but it needs to be laser focused on the first person shooting. That said, I would reassess the investment in a new Halo game after Halo 6. If Halo 6 doesn't show any growth, it may be time to put it out to pasture.

Gears is interesting but I think that with the story arch being what it was for the first three games, making new games in the series is a tough sell. When the arch is finished like it was in Gears 3, it makes it easier for players to lapse. That said, it still should sell well into a larger audience. I would greenlight the next Gears and reassess any further investment in the franchise after it releases.

Forza is their sports franchise. I don't think it's a huge deal that they annualize it so I would continue doing that. Rare should be used to fill in their line up with interesting new IP. Given where the studio stands, I think the Xbox team is already taking the right approach with them (disclaimer: see below).

Smaller items:
  • Create new IP with up and coming teams. Hopefully hit on a few of them like State of Decay and Ori. Invest heavily. Repeat.
  • Partner with studios to create new games in their vast catalog of IP. (Mechassault, Rare IP, Crimson Skies, etc.)
  • Attempt to stem the loss of Japanese action games like Nioh

Yeah there is, but it sounded like one of the main hurdles was Nintendo cock blocking it. They can solve that by also releasing on Switch if Ninty were to agree to it.

Also, Rare already remastered the game, here.

As much as they need to make new IPs, they need to support those games post launch. Whether it be through dlc or sequels. So many lost opportunities this gen just because the games didn't do stellar right at launch.

It's like they put money into these new games, they don't do amazing at launch and then just abandon them.

Stop doing that. Build on these franchises.

It's not really doing what PS4 did, it's doing what Xbox 360 did for most of it's life and building on it. Microsoft went backwards and completely sideways while building on the absolute worst aspects users had already ignored by then like Kinect while Sony just did an Xbox 360, no wonder users jumped into a comfortable pair of shoes.

I've seem some turd on here, jeepers... It's been 16 years...

Sorry dude...I'm Asian. From where I'm coming from, it's still weird seeing Xbox as a consumer brand. No one use Bing, windows phone is barely a speckle, Xbox is an extreme minority, the MS logo is only present in your desktop and laptop (if u r server admin like me, servers and SQL). MS as a consumer brand is again like I mentioned....'U wut m8?'

Owning a Xbox in Asia is like owning a TurboGrafx 16 in the US back in the 90s I guess...the Japanese version of tg16, PC engine, managed to oversell NES at one point in Japan FYI but it's a different story in US...

Playstation 4 console owner

So yeah it would not make much sense for MS to do all that kind of stuff.
Even if 3 or 5 million Playstation 4 owner would magically buy an Xbox One now as a secondary console for 1 or 2 games, they don't play on their main system.
It's just not money well spend, when you consider opportunity costs.

10 years ago being the secondary console, was a viable business modell.
today not anymore. You don't pay for Gold / Ps+ on both consoles. You don't buy your Season Pass and MTX on 2 different platforms.
Ms needs customer, who choose Xbox as their primary gaming platform.

and i'm aware, that some people do this. but they're very rare. and the people who are willing to do that, are the people who are buying bot consoles anyway
