Jim Sterling, Laura Kate Dale: Warning to Yooka-Laylee Pre-Orderers

What platform did he experience these issues on, how bad were they, and was the performance the only problem he had with it? He could properly answer these questions after the embargo, but instead we're just left with a 17-page thread urging people to cancel preorders based on the most vague of comments.
He probably will answer these questions after the embargo.

But it's not that time yet.

Am I the only one who doesn't think Jim Sterling is gods gift to gamers? Like he's not my cup of tea, everything is sarcasm, which I like sarcasm, but not when it gets to being just overly obnoxious and nauseating. He tends to fan the flames of his own 'controversies' having how many videos on the same digital homicide devs. We get it, your a martyr for the news journalism community. I don't even care about most of his controversies, so he gave Zelda a 7/10 who cares.

No, you're not the only one. You're posting on like page 17 and half the posts have basically said what you just did.

I already canceled my preorder after the casino level gameplay.

Honest question - why do you preorder entire games when a single video will make you change your mind and cancel it? If you want to support the game and know you will buy it, then preorder. But if that's not the case, why not just wait until it's released and you can judge the final quality?

god please dont be bad
ive had too many of my dreams crushed already
this could potentially be an even more of a tragic disappointment than M9

Time to take Unity to the backyard with a .45 and end it. I am hard pressed to find games that came out recently that use the engine that didn't have performance problems.
That's way too harsh. Wasn't everyone praising INSIDE last year? That was a beautiful 60fps game on all platforms and it's not the only one.

Don't blame Unity. Some fantastic games have been made in Unity and some of my friends learned how to make a game using it.

Has either of them said anything more?

I don't know. But, if you're looking for elaboration, GameXplain said that performance on Xbox One wasn't particularly great, so it's not just them. How bad it is, I don't know. GameXplain certainly didn't say to cancel your preorder and generally seemed quite positive about the game. I don't think anyone will really know until the embargo is up and DF ora similar team does their analysis. The other technical complaint I've heard is the camera (GameXplain and GameSpot both said that).

I very rarely agree with Jim Sterling, so I'm still pumped. Everything I've seen so far has me really excited, super glad it's one of the two kickstarters I've ever backed.

Yes, you're the only one.

Why do devs keep using fucking Unity? Isn't Unreal 4 cheap now anyway? And superior in pretty much every way imaginable at that?

For indie devs trying to dev for multiple platforms in a short amount of time, Unity is the way to go. UE4 has its own fair share of issues, including issues with creating large open world environs.

If the game is under embargo isn't this kinda saying too much? I mean there's nothing that can be done about it now, but I wonder if Jim will get in shit for saying that at this point in time.

Oh noes, the X1 version is the one I went for :(

Given this was the "man" counfounded by Zelda's weapon hp system I'm not too worried.

No because Gertsman isn't a twat.

Not according to the people who were threatening to kill him. I'm struggling to see the difference between 8.8gate and 7gate. Also, he never said that he didn't understand Zelda's weapon degradation system, he said it was a bad system. He quite clearly understood it and was not confounded by it. Such language seems to suggest that you're making ad hominems to discredit him.

And yeah, as another poster asks, what are the quotes around the word man supposed to convey?

The overreaction in this thread...

So maybe Jim Sterling doesn't like it? Based on his previous reviews I wouldn't think that a game like Y-L is his cup of tea.

Framerate issues I can live with. As a Rare fan I've grown accustomed to that. :D

So what's the big problem exactly? Everyone watch the GameXplain video. They definitely appreciate what the game is going for.

May I ask why the word man is in quotation marks?
He's actually a cartoon character posing as a human. You know, like Roger Rabbit's villain.
If Jeff Gerstmann gives it a poor review, will you call him Jeff "8.8" Gerstmann in order to discredit him?
While the way he said that was pretty much shit, there is some merit in keeping in mind that if you didn't agree with him on some games you have strong opinions of your own on, then his opinion may not really matter to you.

Of course, a lot of other people also said just that but more tactfully in this thread!

Certainly not trying to suggest you can't distrust reviewers, but it gets out of hand to me when posters are saying "Jim Sterling's opinions aren't worth anything to me because 7/10" instead of "Jim Sterling's opinions aren't worth anything to me because of his views on weapon degradation, stamina, aesthetic design choices for the shrines, etc."

That I have no respect for him.

He is the sort to not accept when he's in the wrong (The DOA3 situation, specifically. I'm not calling for his review to be barred) and will often warp the world around him to fit that narrative (and make a bunch of low quality videos in the process).

Also to "discredit" him I'd have to think he had any credit whatsoever.

Also to "discredit" him I'd have to think he had any to start with.

You seem very level headed about someone giving some pixels on screen a 7/10.

I mean it's probably on my top 5 games of all time for right now but I still can see why he would rate it what he did given his issue with durability (which isn't exclusive to him).

So abit unrelated to the post, but Jim's at Valve HQ (with TotalBiscuit apparently). Any ideas what that's about?

I presume they're offering some input on Steam Direct and Steam's recommendation systems. If Jim's hoping the visit will be a turning point in his endeavour to have Valve return to some level of curation, he's undoubtedly going to be sorely disappointed, however I'd wager Valve realises that removing the community from the equation of new releases may open the floodgates somewhat (at least initially) and the store needs to be tweaked accordingly so it can better separate the wheat from the chaff and feed users more relevant suggestions.

He is the sort to not accept when he's in the wrong (The DOA3 situation, specifically. I'm not calling for his review to be barred, just looked at for what it is) and will often warp the world around him to fit that narrative (and make a bunch of low quality videos in the process).

Ironically, you're talking about not respecting a person for giving an honest review at the same time as you lie about what he said in the review. Perhaps you should act more respectfully yourself?

As far as your elaboration, I think you're talking about DoAX3, right? What was he in the wrong about, and when did he not accept it?

Same (well, top 20 games anyway). Jim gave valid criticisms of the game, he didn't make things up or bullshit in the review, and the added caveats of "well look at this other thing he did" feels like an attempt to find reason to not like him because of 7/10.

This is all so very childish.

Lol.

And this along with many other reasons such as Zelda 7/10 and giving a buggy mess like Fallout 4 such a high score. is why i can never take a clown like Jim Sterling seriously. I've never been persuaded by anything he is reviewing. Dude is a contrarian that more or less doesn't know what he is talking about.

Here you go. In it, you'll hear their own comments about console performance and other issues, as well as the positives and their experiences with the game. They avoid saying certain things because it's not a review. A quick summary of what I gathered from their thoughts: They're generally positive and appreciate it for what it is, while recognizing that it has some flaws and a very particular spirit/style.

I remember Jim tweeting at one point about his complaints regarding copyright takedown abuse on YouTube. IIRC, he was complaining to both Valve and YouTube, and he said one of them was listening. I had assumed at the time that it was YouTube (since he's already part of a program they have regarding fair use), but perhaps it was Valve and that's what he's there about. I don't know if TB also talks about copyright takedown abuses on his channel or not.
