Having played all three borderlands and 700+ hours of destiny, they are not in the same ballpark in tone.
Nor do I feel it shifted in tone because of this trailer. Zavalla is acting like Zavalla with the noble fighters of the town, Cayde is acting like Cayde trying to appeal to the rif raff of the last city .....The pirates if you would. They only understand one thing, the quest for more booty

I would argue that him screaming loot isn't a sign that Bungie is now emphasizing personality and story, but that they're still focused on the loot grind. I'm not gonna pass judgement until I actually see more gameplay, but it's really easy to be skeptical after the debacle that was Destiny 1's release

She's a serious character, but Cayde liked to give her shit.
She was a hunter on a team of six that went into the Hellmouth on the moon to kill the Hive and Crota. Her entire team died and she lost her ghost, but she managed to survive in the Hellmouth for years until finally returning to the Tower. During her time in the Hellmouth, the Hive took her eyes, so she took theirs as replacements.
I don't think she'll be in Destiny 2, though. In one of the ghost fragments, she mentions that she's leaving the City. She says that there's a storm coming, and she won't be around when it finally hits.
She's a cool character, if not a little too self-serious.
For anyone disappointed with Destiny or with content volume, taking a skeptical, wait and see approach is entirely reasonable. Especially considering the repeat of the expansion pass and two announced expansions along side the game announcement - definitely echoes of Destiny 1 there.
But the assertion that they're going to follow the exact same approach based on that is ridiculous. You don't know how much is in either the base game or the expansions, though we do know the expansions are priced $5 lower this time around. We'll know the size and shape of it soon enough, not to mention the beta this summer.
It's been the tone of the game for nearly two years now.
I don't have an intimate knowledge of the characters in the series. All I saw was one character doing your generic Braveheart-style speech and the other, the trailer's focus, doing a comedic "awkward" bit. Like I said, your game can have comedic elements but if, in the very first trailer you show to the world, you're emphasizing those comedic elements, I'm going to see it as a comedy. A Halo debut trailer with Sgt. Johnson yucking it up would be true to the game but it wouldn't paint it as being anywhere close to serious.
I get the impression that Bungie's abandoning any pretense of making a story you can take seriously and, seeing as this would be my introduction to the series, it's disappointing.

You don't find it plausible because you don't want it to be. You had an impression and are choosing what narrative you think is plausible because it fits your initial impression.
You seem to miss the point of my previous post. If you want to look at the trailer as canon story and judge the actions of the characters within the context of the universe... then you can't just pick and choose what elements of that universe you want to consider. It's not as simple as you want to paint it to be because emotions are complex and not required to react to things the way you do or want them to do.
If you don't want to look that deeply, then you should accept that it's a tongue in cheek trailer meant to reflect the two largest sides of the community that love the game. The people who delve deep into the world and lore and love the depth of the Destiny universe... and the people who literally only care about blowing things up to get cool new loot to blow things up in a slightly different, cooler, way.
Trying to play halfway between the two points just enough to try to back up your point is making a disingenuous argument. And it is an argument, not a critique. It stopped being critique the moment you began the back and forth to justify you stance.
Very few people have an issue with the critique of the trailer. People's justification for that critique though, that seems lacking.

Zavalla and Cayde have an ongoing back and forth of that nature. It has been a part of the story for years now. Zavalla takes things seriously, Cayde says ah whatever and does whatever he wants. This is not a new dynamic and is totally in line with the existing story.
I guess it just plays differently to people who aren't already well versed in Destiny.
Exactly. I personally have faith in Bungie, based on the changes they've made to the game since vanilla launch, that they realize there needs to be more content in these two expansions.
I should also note that in my personal opinion, House of Wolves was already a noticeable improvement over The Dark Below. The short campaign was way better and it had an actual final boss mission. The story itself felt better than TDB as well.
TTK was then an extension of this learning curve and I believe this will continue with Destiny 2.
if I'm wrong, that will suck. But I have faith in them.

I do really wish they kept going with D1's DLC route, free content in between yearly expansions then $40 for the expansion. This DLC1 and 2 thing is turning me off.

Nobody is saying that Cayde's humor shouldn't exist. It's just that it's overused in this trailer. That, and the content of what he's saying all points towards Destiny 2 being more about loot than story

While it wasn't the debut trailer, the vast majority of Destiny marketing was guardians dancing to Led Zeppelin and parroting stereotypical voice chat talk. You're over reading when you know that the purpose here is "yo Destiny fans, get excited and pre-order now!" and not some hard commentary on the tone of the game.
Doesn't really seem like they would compensate and then still keep the same content map outline but sure, we'll see. Like I said I would like nothing more than for D2 to be amazing on every level given the current Fall multiplayer slate. the Beta will probably be just as great as D1's.

I have no problem assuming that it is more about loot than story. No matter how much they add story or how seriously they take it the loot grind will always be the main focus of the game. If that's not what you're looking for then Destiny is just not the game for you.
Having 2 big expansions is great.
The thing is. Bungie needs to have smaller content deployments in between that. I'm sure they've taken some notes on Division and even Overwatch.
The themed content updates in Overwatch are amazing and Destiny 2 needs to do something similar. They need things to keep players engaged every so often.

Yes it had 3 if you count rise of iron, which imo was closer to HoW than anything. Im sure a 4th was planned and got scrapped for destiny 2 as well since their original leaked roadmap was

So it was always going to be this way before Destiny 1 was announced.
The vast majority? That was one live action trailer close to launch. It was the Destiny equivalent of the CoD "There's a Soldier in All of Us" trailers.
And no, if the purpose here was to just say "yo Destiny fans, get excited and pre-order now" they could have just put up something revealing the trailer. This is the game's debut trailer, it's the direct equivalent of the Halo 3: ODST one I linked earlier. That's its purpose to you as a Destiny fan, but as a person new to Destiny what I see I'm not a fan of.

Destiny 2 loot needs to be a lot better then the first game, more perks that adjust how weapons work and react, less minor buffs, they need to have meaning instead of being infusion fuel.

Taken King had one as well, and combined it was literally 100% of the game's TV marketing, which is what the vast majority of people actually see, not the full length YouTube uploads and E3 broadcasts.
And like I said before, it's a change in marketing approach from the Halo days. But that's just it. A marketing approach. Not some grand reveal of Bungie's new Deadpool game. It's a CG trailer cooked up by marketing. Chillax.

There's context for that tone. Mainly being "Holy shit our entire original writing team is gone. We have no idea what the Darkness or the Traveler are or should be. We're drowning in negative comments about the story. Let's just focus on personality of these characters we have."
This was their chance to launch V2 and right the ship. Get that sense of mystery with the big events and nature of these larger than life objects and forces back on the radar. But they continued to just work their mediocre comedy. Clearly you see the problem people are having, right? Again, first impressions.
Lots of Destiny players have racked up hundreds/thousands of hours in the game. It really isn't that hard to understand.

No. Not at all. The draw was the gameplay. The alerts you're describing are still there and ate going to be fleshed out in the story. Perhaps the mystery and awe you're selling is better experienced in the game this time. No telling. The trailer does confirm loot. That's what people love, loot.
