So if I buy this directly from Samsung, Verizon won't have any control over the updates and add bloatware right?

with previous models, the Verizon model got updated on the Verizon schedule. didn't mater where it was bought.

and for ATT/TMo peeps, the US unlocked model of the GS7 actually got updated later and less frequently than the carrier versions.

not the same camera sensor as last year

What are people's feelings on the s8+ here?

I felt assumed going in from the reveal that I would go for the bigger one but tbh, at almost £100 difference it seems a lot for just a very small screen increase and a battery increase :/

That doesn't make sense. How can gorilla glass 5 be any less scratch resistant than its predecessors

Gorilla glass 3 is harder than 5 thus it scratches less but is more brittle when dropped and vice versa. Personally i prefer gg3 to 5 since it doesn't really need screen protector if you avoid getting sand on your pocket. LG g6 has 3 for example.

Intresting did not know this

Went for it because of the slighty bigger antennas.

I'm thinking about getting the LG G6, I didn't really like the Edge 7 I had.

The S8+ looks gorgeous but I dislike the curve at the edges, even if it looks awesome and it costs 250 € more than the LG G6.

Anybody that has ahd experience with LG that can give me an opinion?

That's not exactly true. He posted an updated video stating the issue in his first test.

https://youtu.be/nOz4Kf5AL7Q

The problem was the sharpening stone he was using for his needles had residue that rubbed off onto his 3 needle. The hardness of that was like 8, and that's why the Note 7 was getting scratched with a 3.
Was actually in the middle of looking up more info because I came across a few articles where corning refuted his tests.

I remember when i went to tmobile and I had a rep try to sell me on screen protectors because I actually had scarches on my phone, I just couldn't "see it". The reps are really just trying to sell accessories.

Yeah I agree that the reps are definitely going to push accessories and are not the best source of whether or not you are going to need a screen protector.

Any S7 edge or other curved Samsung owners have any recommendations for tempered glass protector brands?

I've used Sena ultra slim pouches for each of my previous galaxies..And I'm going to do the same for the s8, had it confirmed via email they will be doing a US for the s8 at least

I'm up for a phone upgrade so I'm looking at the S8 or the iphone 7. I've had a couple of Android phones but I kind of want to try an iPhone just to check it out. I really love the screen on this one though but I should head down to the store and check out a demo unit first.

Smart thing would be to wait for iphone 2017 before deciding. Rumors are that they are doing a similar minimum bezel design this year too.

Anyone see any videos that show a decent amount of app usage? Pretty sure I'm gunna upgrade from my Note 5 but I'd really like to see how the wider aspect ratio looks in use. Really curious how stuff like Netflix handles the wider screen. Mostly just hoping that video apps don't do some bizarre stretching or something.

I have the S7 edge and it's scratched to hell and back. Rumour is Samsung's oleophobic coating isn't up to snuff.

Will have to echo others here and say that even with my year old S7 edge sharing pockets/pouches/toolboxes with screws/keys/tools (I'm an electrician) my screen is quite literally scratch free.

I just know on YouTube you can either keep the black borders, or there's a button you can click and it will stretch out the video a bit to fill in the screen. Looked fine on the video I saw of someone handling the phone, but who knows how it'll look in person.

How? I've had my s6 with no case or screen protector for more than a year and it's still in great condition.
Heh I've had my S6 for two years and it has tons of scratches and the white film inside the casing started to detach at places.

I'm not particularly careful though. You don't see the scratches when the screen is on anyway. I just wear out my phones in two years and get a new one. The OIS getting loose is a worse problem.

Wait, why is video resolution so much lower? That can't be right, can it?

It might be. I'm highly skeptical that a handheld device with very compact secondary function optics and sensors could have any meaningful resolution for video greater than 1080p. At least today.

It's one thing for TV shows to sometimes film at 1080p with high end DSLRs, but they've got a light crew and fixtures to keep the camera steady. Not to mention the quality of elements within the optics of a good DSLR lens is miles beyond a smartphone. A smart phone recording 4K in sub-optimal lighting vs 1080p is just going to result in storage space being consumed much more rapidly.

Yeah. I'll just use this phone for 2 years and then see where to go from there. Idk why people don't make a bigger deal about samsung pay. It's the best feature you could ask for on a phone. May keep me loyal to Samsung for the s10.

How is it different to the iOS one? I've used neither but I've opened the iOS one a few times on my phone

it works pretty much everywhere because of the MST tech and not just at places with NFC payments turned on.
Yep. Anywhere you can swipe you can use Samsung pay. It's amazing until you run into that one person at the register who doesn't understand what it does. Had a lady who wouldn't let me use it because the last 4 digital numbers didn't match the last 4 on my actual card.

Finally put the pre-order for S8+ for Orchid Grey, but then cancelled it and opted for Midnight Black as it looks more sexy...

Upgrading my phone after more than a year.

Sadly, no Snapdragon for EMEA region, which sucks, I've been out of Samsung loop since Galaxy S4, how far has Exynos processor gone now? Performance and battery to be the same as Snapdragon 835?

It seems you will get different sensors depending on what country you are in.

if previous years are any indicator, it's more random than that.

it's a straight up camera lottery, two devices, same make and model on same carrier can have different camera modules.

the past few years now, some devices got a Sony sensor and some got a Samsung.

judgment of photos taken by both have been a toss up.

Have a gear s3 already so yeah Samsung pay is legit.

Couldn't get it to work at gas stations in the US though or any place that you insert a credit card.

I want to see and touch one. Which places have demos already? Ideally, I'd want to compare both the LG G6 and this phone to see which one I'll finally get.

It is a well known issue and was even reported by users on gaf's s7 thread... really do I need to take a shot of my unit?

Best Buy has S8 units, but when I went to preorder it I didn't see any G6 demos. I think T-mobile has them also, not sure about the other carriers.

Welp I hope I win the lottery then.

Some details are making me kind of question my pre-order. My current phone was a Note 3, I'm tempted to wait for the Note 8 buuut I cant see it being much better than the S8+ probably just more Ram, and highly unlikely but maybe the on screen fingerprint.

The Exynos was much better than the Snapdragon last year.
