Recommendation for a friend: NieR Automata or Persona 5?

ULTROS!

People seem to like me because I am polite and I am rarely late. I like to eat ice cream and I really enjoy a nice pair of slacks.
So I have a friend who's looking for an RPG to play and he's considering both games. Problem is I love both games and they're both very good. Hoping a diverse opinion on GAF would help.

Basically his background:
- Final Fantasy XV was his system seller for the PS4 and he loved it, he even platinumed it.
- His last console was the PSone, last game was FFVIII. Never had a PS2 or PS3.
- He doesn't like anime but he loved Naruto.
- He's more into gameplay, but a good story should still help.

Update:
- He's also playing World of Final Fantasy and loves it.

Nier. Nier is more gameplay focused than P5 and has a good story so it covers both bases. Also since he liked XV I imagine he'd probably prefer another ARPG.

Given the fact XV was a system seller, he prefers combat and Naruto i would immediately recommend NieR because it seems like something based off his preferences he will dig.

Maybe when Persona 5 drops in price gift it as a birthday present/christmas present or ease him into it later because as great as P5 is it just seems like NieR fits his taste more based on what you said.

If gameplay is his bag then Neir: Automata is probably going to be the safe pick. That said, of the two games I'm loving Persona 5 INFINITELY more.

Gonna go with Nier because Persona's strength is its story and setting. While Nier has a really different story vibe, the story is pretty good and the action is great.

- Well imo Nier is basically a better version of FFXV in virtually every aspect other than graphics.
- Between the two, Nier is definitely the less "anime" out of the two, not that I would describe Nier as such anyhow.
- Nier's gameplay/combat is more than serviceable, while still having a strong ass story is the actual highlight of the game. So best of both worlds.

So yea, Nier.

Persona 5 easily. Nier falters in the gameplay department quite a bit, so I can't recommend it over P5 in that regard either.

I'd go with Persona.

Its a JRPG ass JRPG but different enough from Final Fantasy and I guess he is fine with turn based combat,

Neir is great but I am not sure I would give it to someone wanting a JRPG

+1

I think Persona 5 is the "safer" game honestly. NieR is a weirdo Yoko Taro game that might be my new favorite game... but is still a weirdo Yoko Taro game so it's harder to judge if people will be into that from my experience.

I was gonna say Nier, because it's an action game, but since he loved WoFFa dn doesn't mind tun based combat, then teh answer simply is Persona 5.

It's dramatically better game/JRPG,

I can just say that Nier:A didn't hook me... I will try again later. The sub-Bayo level action gameplay just felt off to me.

Loving Persona 5, though, for the most part, even if the pacing and story bits are a bit long-winded at times, the camera is awful when trying to stealthily attack enemies, and the arbitrary constraints on the time-management segments is a constant annoyance.

I don't know your friend, but Persona 5 strikes me as the much more solid game.

Sounds like he might be a big FF fan. Might be worth seeing if he ever played the Kingdom Hearts series too.

He never did play the Kingdom Hearts series (since no PS2 and PS3) and he's considering it too.

Edit: Apparently he does have KH I.5 + II.5! He's planning on getting 2.8.

I dunno ... i'm reading that list of games he's played and it sounds like he'd be much more at home in Persona than Nier...

Like... lumping FF15 and Nier together as examples of similar more "gameplay" focused games seems totally off base... cause FF is the easiest combat/"gameplay" ever. I feel like the step up to Nier level action might be a little jarring.

P5 though ... since he digs a story ... is gonna endear itself to him much more quickly - I would imagine. (in all fairness - I haven't played a single second of Persona5.)

I think I'd go with Persona 5. It's a hard choice for sure but I definitely think it is easier to get something out of Persona 5. Nier:A for it to affect you I feel like you need to be up to invest in it. Meaning reading everything the game gives you actively thinking about everything that happens etc etc. While I definitely think if you do that it's a super powerful game it's not something for everyone or even every mood. Like I've read people playing Nier:A like with 0 mental engagement and to them it was a rather dull action game with nothing special to it and too much nonsense.
I feel like Persona 5 will just suck people in without a great deal of effort required from the person playing.

As for gameplay honestly people are just too entrenched in Action > Turnbased. And I don't see it that way honestly.
Both are pretty good at what they do gameplay wise but also neither are the best systems I've ever played for both.

Persona 5. Just a total package all things considered.

I love nier, but the world in that was a bit dull imo. Combat was decent but I wouldn't put it up there with platinum's best combat systems either. That said it's still one of my favorite games this generation and you can't go wrong with either.

Totally Nier given all you've said OP. Make sure he plays thtough it like 4 or 5 times for the complete experience. If that sounds offputting change to Persona V.

Both great.

Picking children here but nier is my favorite game of all time, vs persona 5 which so far is my favorite persona. So I vote nier but my heart says both.

The real answer is both. But if you must choose one, I believe Nier is the most appropriate choice.

In any case, both are great games and you can't go wrong with either.

Both are easy to recommend, but I guess I'd go with NieR. Can't go wrong with either game, though. If he enjoyed FFXV he should be able to enjoy pretty much anything.

Persona 5 is better. Also I feel that the bad difficulty balancing in NieR is a huge disservice to it's gameplay. Only would recommend NieR over P5 if he really dislikes turn based games but since he likes WOFF I assume this isn't the case.

- He doesn't like anime but he loved Naruto.

Seriously, say this to him

Friend X, this year Japan released two incredible games.

Nier is an action based rpg game made by platinum etc... Its a crazy history/narrative, one of the finest SE games in a while. An unique experience to say at least.

Persona is a series of stylish turn based rpgs who are heavy with "social commentary", part dating sim/time management part rpg. If you love rpgs this is a must.

....And both have god-tier soundtrack.

So friend X, the real question its which one you have to play first ;)

If OP dont know Nier its much shorter than Persona, whose average run is +100 hours. So i say Nier first.

I'd think Nier would be easier to swallow than Persona 5, as well as a more unique experience. Both are excellent games though.
