Bayonetta out on Steam (4K, dual audio), $19.99, PC launch trailer, dev diary

It does. The "Angel Slayer" chapter is unlocked by beating all Alfheim challenges. Basically like a survival mode in the Alfheim area that gets increasingly and increasingly more difficult as you progress through each encounter. In Angel Slayer you fight some of the most incredibly difficult enemy counters and boss battles too. Also there's a unique reward for beating it.

Oh man, that's fantastic news!!! Shows how little I know about the game...

There is so much to this game that I feel like I'm still finding out new things about it. The amount of depth, content and secrets they put into Bayonetta is incredible.

1 hour in, can someone ELI5 the story :lol

MGR is my perfection when it comes to action games, let's see how this one compares!
As much as I love MGR, it seems rather shallow when compared to Bayonetta with its deep combat system and variety of weapons. Enjoy!

Game ran locked at 60@4k in the beginning and now 3h in I get some frequent drops to 55.

I just installed the W10 creators update so I'm not sure if that might be the problem. I turned Game Mode and Game DVR off but it's still stuttering.

Anybody else having frequent stutters?

Really hope I can fix this because it's a blast to play. Can't believe I missed this on 360.

It's also stuttering for me. At first only seemingly bad framepacing, but chapter 2 has also introduced some solid drops here and there. I've read on the Steam forums that it might help to go back to a driver version before 381.65, so I'm gonna try that.

Seems the big thing that can hit framerates at higher resolutions is any special move that has especially bloody effects. Realised that at 1800p I was getting some consistent drops when Bayonetta pulled the chainsaw torture attack on a Harmony.

Harmony.jpg

And similarly so when she finished off Beloveds, especially in Chapter VI.

20 years ago, Bayonetta woke up with amnesia. She has a jewel on her chest that's one of the "Eyes of the World". In her spare times, she uses her Witch powers to kill Angels for fun.

When she hears rumors about a second Eye of the World gem, she heads off to Europe to chase it down, thinking it might help her recover her memory. From there, things start getting slightly weird (mysterious voices, fragmented flashbacks, etc.).

Also, Bayonetta doesn't really age since she's a Witch, if you were wondering about that.

Nothing Enzo says at the start of the game is supposed to make sense, lol. My theory is that Enzo's opening monologue is designed to be the "palate cleanser" between the falling clock tower and Bayonetta kicking ass in her nun outfit. But yeah, Enzo's opener is intentionally confusing.

Any chance someone could help me with some troubleshooting?

I have a gtx 1070, 16gb ram, and an i7-2600k

When I boot the game and the intro cutscene begins to play, it'll stutter. It freezes after a second or two, then plays for a second or two, then repeats. I've tried running in both 16:9 and 16:10 resolutions, toggled hdr and vsync, disabled AA and SSAO entirely and it still does it no matter what.

The cutscene doesn't do the PiP bug, just the stuttering playback. I've got no clue what else I can try except wait for a patch?

Cheers!

Yup, Enzo was the one that confused me the most because his speech came up in the moment that seemed perfect for some infodump but instead sounded like ramblings of lunatic.

Watching Bayonetta on UPF now it just reminds me how it's a poor man's GoW, complete with digital leg spreads and semi-anime instead of fantastic visuals and presentation, really getting across colossal beasts. With combat that just feels like carnage and super satisfying as opposed to silly and cheesy.

Man I loved GoW 3.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA.

Good joke. If anything it's a poor man's Capcom DMC. And that's still far and above shitting on GoW in terms of complexity.

You've had a rough week for shitty opinions, bud.

No, I'm serious. It's not on the same level in every category you can think of to compare.

Even if that style is what you're into, it's just a mishmash with some good ideas but mostly a b-teir overall package that's lacking in budget, ambition and execution compared to GoW 3.

I picked it up on PS3, dropped it quickly thinking the performance was the issue with me not enjoying it. Then grabbed the collection on WiiU and dropped 2 after the quirkiness wore off and I had large empty areas to wander around.

Gow3 was fierce and epic. This is like budget dumb fun.

Nah man.

Not even close.

I guess this thread has come full circle now that we're recycling a decade+ old debate.

what's next, god of war is really not an action game but a beatem up therefore comparisons are invalid?

At least the NG v DMC debates were fun, these have always been trash filled drudgery. Let the troll go his way and crawl back to the Mason Briggs thread.

Translation: GoW3 looked pretty and I like that.

Case closed, Johnson.

Still digging that hole with that shovel of trash tier opinions.

It is incredible just how wrong people can be and how their delusions warp reality.

Vin Diesel with chains and massive enemies vs Eddy Gordo with guns attached to his feet, dance-fighting.

visually satisfying then?

Is that all you look in a character action game, I guess. I think the huge variety of moves, weapons, tehcniques, combat fluidity, enemy variety with actual fun attack patterns surely wins over an angry muscled man using blades attached to chains.

But tastes and opinions and all that.

Maybe I didn't get far enough into Bayonetta each time I tried to get into it to find the deeper combat - I'm guessing random stuff like shooting them from a distance to keep them in the air like dmc to keep chains going, but gow3's combat was satisfying and challenging even without focusing on chains but just surviving. And the game was compelling from start to finish. I know people here really like Bayonetta though. Maybe there's something to it after a bunch of hours.

I mean, I really love the GoW series (like, really, really love), but GoW and Bayonetta not even in the same stratosphere when it comes to gameplay and player agency. Stratosphere. Galaxy. Timeline. Dimension.

Again, I love me some GoW, but it's a comparatively a lot more passive and simplistic, with a stronger focus on giving the player a more constrained cinematic experience. The combat depth and variety of Bayonetta alone, man, I don't even know where to begin?! The creative and unique bosses with their various forms? The god-tier weighty animations for the bosses/enemies/Bayonetta herself, let alone so many different weighty animations for various weapons? Bayonetta is like being offered a delicious buffet and being told you can eat as much as you like, with any weird food combination you like. GoW is like going out to have a classy dinner with only three items being offered the menu. Both are great, but are offering the consumer different things.

God of War is like training wheels in terms of combat mechanics from Bayonetta and DMC.

Yup.

Enzo is my favorite Joe Pesci role next to Jake's brother in Raging Bull ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

Joe Pesci? You mean Chick Vennera

This man knows what's up.

Anyone who doesn't think Bayonetta is the greatest action game ever created needs to at least see the first combo in this video.

Bayonetta is more interesting than raw survival play than any of the DMC games, I think. Most of the particularly strong enemies (Grace, Glory, Fearless, Fairness, Joy, Ardor) don't get introduced until you're several chapters in, and they do a better job of keeping you on your toes than any standard enemy in pretty much any Devil May Cry.
