Yooka-Laylee |OT| Reptile Rolling in the 90’s

I was sent a PS4 key despite being pretty sure I selected PC in the Kickstarter survey at the ~$100 tier. I wasn't sure how long it would take CS to replace my key, or if they would at all, given the holiday weekend so I went ahead and redeemed it.

I'm not usually an FPS snob, but the performance on PS4 (Pro, though it doesn't seem to matter for this game) is distracting. Somewhere between the art style and the manual camera control, the lack of smoothness in the visuals is really jarring. I don't want to spend another $40 on the game for a PC key, given that I already spent ~$100, but I'm just not enjoying it on PS4.

Disappointing.

I enjoy the game's humor for the most part; it's quite charming. I especially love how insensitive and unfiltered Laylee is.

The visuals can be really inconsistent, though there are moments where the game shines if you're in the right spot. I'm playing it at 1440p/60 FPS, so the image quality is great, but the art design falters sometimes — especially in some of the more open spaces.

When it comes to the camera, it actively works to hamper the experience with how little maneuverability it offers and how it acts as a physical object that's affected by geometry. It's far from ideal for a game that expects you to get optimal viewpoints to reach platforms or collectibles. To make matters worse, it'll sometimes get stuck under the game's geometry, forcing you to click the left stick in the hopes that it'll readjust without needing to restart the game.

The checkpoint/save system is a mess. Why am I kicked back to the hub world after exiting the game from within one of its worlds? It should at least save the game when I exit and allow me to restart from that point.

The minigames are rather boring and banausic. I feel like I'm going through the motions to get another collectible instead of enjoying what I'm doing. Coming off of Tropical Freeze, the mine cart sections in particular felt unrefined and half-baked.

The character design is mostly really good — especially the main characters. However, characters like Vendi are more unsettling than interesting.

The music has been catchy and harks back to the Banjo titles in a good way. My only complaint is that I don't already have the orchestrated versions. For example, the horns in Glitterglaze Glacier sound awful at the moment.

If I had to assign a rating thus far, I'd give it a 6.5. I'm still having fun running around collecting things, but it's very much unrefined and moth-eaten in some ways.

I liked this as well, although I remember Kazooie being more mean, and actually having back and forth arguments with NPCs (like Bottles and King Jingaling), while in this game the NPCs pretty much ignore her, like she is only thinking what she's saying or something.

There were characters in Kazooie/Tooie that hated Kazooie because of how rude she was (and would give sass right back to her). In this game, there isn't really the same sort of relationship with the NPCs. Nobody seems to mind Laylee at all, they come across as kind of aloof or naive.

Also Banjo would chastise Kazooie more than Yooka does (again, it's as if she never actually says what is in her text box). I actually can't really even remember Yooka ever telling Laylee to cut it out.

Well said the characters simply feel like NPC's rather then personalities that inhabit the world, there is no snap back or conversation on that witty level.

That's what stood out to me too. None of the NPC's throw anything back at Laylee, it would be funnier if they did.

You do get a little like with Yooka shhh'ing on Laylee, when Laylee says something like "what's wrong with her arms" when first meeting Puzz, but it's never as snappy as in Banjo. It does have its own special moments though. Like the almost melancholic longing after a bygone age you get with Rextro, who's naively waiting for his friends to show up, when they get done "playing on a line".

Almost an innocent version of Cranky Kong that doesn't berate the main characters, who underscores what's been lost in a game that itself is a representation of something lost. And it's just so fitting they chose an extinct species like the dinosaur to represent that. I feel it's got a lot of heart and warmth of it's own, even though wearing it on its sleeve like that can also come off a little heavy handed.

Just finished, 100%. Took me 21 hours. That final boss was something, eh?

So yeah, I maintain everything I've said in this thread, it's a mediocre game. Still, it was an enjoyable time for me because I love Banjo so much. I find it impossible to hate what they've done here, especially after seeing the ending and the huge list of backers. That really put a smile on my face. I wish Playtonic nothing but the best, hope this sells extremely well, but also I also hope they learn from the severe design shortcomings this game has and make a better one next time, whatever that will be. I'll be there.

On the 4th world now, I think I;ve decided I don't like the game, which really upsets me as BK is my favourite game ever and BT is up there as well. But it just didn't capture the same type of vibe and the level designs were confusing and annoying to me. Oh well, hopefully we get a sequel and they improve everything. I don't regret my purchase though, anything to support these types of games.

World 4 is really boring, but power through it because 5 is legit.

Yeah, a refined Yooka-Tooie with a bigger budget and more time in the oven might be great

I feel like if your score bests Rextro's high score during the first go, you should just get both pagies right off the bat. Going through the outrageously long 4th world minigame a second time was torture.

Also did yall know if you tap the d-pad you can make Yooka and Laylee do little emotes? I discovered it on accident today and I dont think Ive seen it mentioned at all.

I'll be the first to admit this game can use some good amount of polish, but I have experienced the exact bug that you posted in dozens of games, especially those where constantly jumping into things is invited.
I dropped right into that spot and couldn't get out. I had to go back to the hub world. I probably would have stopped playing if I had lost progress, but luckily the game saves after picking up a collectible.

Wanna take a few days to write out all my thoughts after finishing it, but the biggest flaws in the game is the Pagies and the worlds themselves.

Jiggies were rewarded for getting to interesting or slightly out of the way locations as well as interacting with unique witty inhabitants of the worlds that banter back and forth often when Kazooie makes some sort of crude remark. Kongo and his mangos, Snappers chasing you through the water with that horrible music playing, the giant turtle Tanktup that you have to smash his feet in because their cold and can no longer move them, and then climbing in his mouth to be greeted by a Choir of turtles that turns into a game of memory, Trunker with Kazooie remarking about his *dry balls*, Napper the sleeping ghost making sure you don't make a noise or repeating notes on a giant piano in The Haunted Church, escorting Twinklies to the Christmas tree so they can light the Christmas tree memorable experiences that to this day are burned into my memory.

Some jiggies were the same such as time trials or simply using powers to get past obstacles but most felt different unique and more importantly they felt rewarding to collect. Yooka Laylee jam packs a ton of collectibles with Pagies feeling like a chore to collect solving puzzle after puzzle mostly involving switches rather then the interaction between memorable places or interesting NPCs.
The worlds don't feel like a living breathing place simply a giant playground that only Yooka and Laylee could feasible get around, I remember a ton of interesting places in Banjo and Tooie but Yooka Laylee felt like a blur with nothing catching my interest.
I didn't expect Yooka Laylee to break new ground or surpass either of the games, I just didn't expect it to be..so unlike the previous games feeling like it forgets what made those games great.

is there a way to roll, jump, then roll again when you hit the ground, or am I missing something? Those ramps are starting to annoy me

So apparently there's a bug in Capital Cashino that prevents you from getting the Pagie from Kartos and it happened to me. If you get hit by the fire after you cross through the finish ring (after the game is out of your control) you can get your total knocked back down below 150 even though you finished above 150. I finished with 153 and immediately after finishing was hit by fire which changed the on screen counter to 148. Kartos still gave me a pagie and I faced the boss as standard but I never actually got the pagie off him added to my total. For fuck sake.

I have everything else done in this world except that one bugged pagie, too.

Did this happen to anyone else?

Different circumstances, but yeah, I'll be down a Pagie now too.. Pretty annoyed, but I'm hoping they can fix it for us poor souls..

It happened to me this weekend and crushed my spirit (had just cleared the first 3 worlds trying to 100% the game). Ended up restarting my save and rushing to World 4 to make sure I could get all 25 pagies there this time. Now going back to clean up those first 3 worlds again.

Speaking of issues with the game, whenever I go back to the area outside of the entrance to Hivory Towers on PS4, the framerate drops to like 1 FPS. Does that happen to anyone else?

I'm quite enjoying the game so far, but after losing part of my progress for the second time (related to AMD graphic card problem) I'm inclined to wait for a patch

the one thing that I find quite frustrating is that there's no checkpoint system in place or teleporters (as far as I can tell). Having to walk from the start point and climb the same mountain again x times in a row because you accidentaly fell down somehwere is super annoying. What sort of helps is going into an interior to reset the start point to a new location, but it's a stupid fix

and how exactly does the interaction between rolling and jumping work? On the way to the first boss a wooden pole blocks the ramp, I managed to jump on it once but always drop down on my subsequent tries. And there's a page that requires you to jump over multiple ramps, but once you jump you can't go back to rolling and slide down the ramps

I rewatched the intro to Tooie last night, and nothing even close to that sort of back and forth exists in this game.

Like this
Mumbo: Mole doesn't look so good
Banjo: He looks worse than that, Grunty killed him!
Kazooie: Oh well, he wasn't the most popular character in the last game
Banjo: Kazooie!
Kazooie: Sorry...

There's nothing like that in this game.

99% of the conversations are

Yooka: Hello
NPC: Hi, here's my problem
Laylee: Rude remark, probably a 4th wall break
NPC: Continues with problem as if she doesn't exist
Yooka: k, we'll do it
Laylee: Some kind of rude remark about a good reward

The only real actual conversations in this game seem to be with Trowzer. At least there's some semblance of back and forth with him.

Wow you restarted, I don't know if I can do that at the moment.. I'll probably complete everything else and pray for a patch. Although if they confirm they can't fix it... I probably will restart, so annoying..

Jusy hit world 4 and still in love with this game. It just clicks with me and I've had none of the issues people have mentioned (PS4 Pro with boost mode on). It's so fun to get lost in worlds like this again. I have no complaints.

Except Bee Bop. Fuck Bee Bop. I actually really liked the first 2 arcade games (I know some hate Kartos Karting but I found it fun and didn't have any issue beating the high score) but Bee Bop is a crime against humanity.

There's no checkpoints or teleporters because the maps become a lot easier to get around later on. As for rolling and jumping, you can do both at the same time. Just keep holding the trigger while you jump. You can also jump higher if you stop/slow down while rolling.

Yep. They shouldn't call it easy though. Call it normal and make the current difficulty hard, so people get a better feeling of accomplishment.

I wouldn't call it "normal" since the current difficulty was the original intention... "Modern" and "Classic" might be more fitting.

ah, thanks. It probably would have taken me forever to figure this out

That's so interesting, Bee Bop was the easiest for me. Make sure you're using all of the commands. On the Xbox controller, A increases altitude and X slams the bee down. Just bop corplets in a line with X like you would jump on Goombas in Mario or bop multiples at once if they overlap. Watch for when the fire appears and when it does look for other, safer corplets then come back. Just avoid the water and it's pretty easy to beat.

I bought this game for my 10 year old nephew. He's used to mobile games, lego games and frankly, modern games without challenge.

He played for a while and seemed to enjoy the colorful nature of it and was reading along. But I think the amount of challenges initially available to him may have been intimidating and once he hit a roadblock he kind of lost steam.

I'll try to find a time to play with him and help him understand any puzzle clues. It's just mildly disappointing. I think kids look for different things in games these days.

I'm only on World 3, but I'm liking the game quite a bit so far. It really is BK3 (with DK64 design mixed in), but because of that DK64 influence, and the lack of general polish and cohesiveness to many of the worlds it kind of just makes me want to get Rare Replay to play Tooie. Which is the best Rare game despite all the hate it gets now.

I'm 6 quills away from 100% world 1, this is driving me insane, they could be anywhere
if you have the tonic that alerts you to when "rare items" are nearby, equip that and start going around every area. It'll start playing a whistle sound that gets louder as you get closer anytime youre in range to the missing quills

was a real life saver for me when i got down to 1-2 left on a map

That's a great mechanic. Missing quills/notes really stress me out for some reason, I'll definitely have to use this.

I'm done, can't finish this game. Got to the casino world then I was just like "lol, nope..."

I decided to wall breach to reach the final boss. But this final boss embodies everything wrong with the game for me. Long, tedious, not fun. And why does a boss this long have zero checkpoints or health refills?

This game, imo, is an embarrassment to the classics.

I'm not like salty trolls though, I'm glad to see others enjoying it.

I have no idea why I had so much trouble but I kept running out of stamina and missing jumps. I did finally beat the high score though!

There are quite a few bugs that straight up prevent you from getting all the pagies. Playtonic needs to address them quickly.

The one in world 4? I haven't completed that one yet (3 pagies, haha). What should I do to not stumble across that bug?

Still having a great time with the game, btw. first 3 worlds cleared, BAMM! I laughed out loud at what happens just before the bossfight in world 5. So wrong, haha! :D Classic scene!

Somehow missing 6 quills in the 5th world. Got everything else. Anyone got any tips on where sneaky ones could be? Pretty sure they must be together.

Likely possibilities: charge attack the toilets, on the rocky ridge of the island with a crane that required boat power

Thanks for the tip, seems I got those already. Found another 3 elsewhere though. I guess I'll have to listen for the whistling to find the rest.

If you're referring to the one I mention earlier today, try to finish the course with 155 tokens or more (not easy) or time your finish so that you're far away from the next fire obstacle when you cross the finish ring.

Ah, nope I didn't mean that. I heard somewhere that the coins don't add up for all the pagies you are supposed to get or something weird like that.

I'm stuck at that cart challenge right now, btw. It's so hard for me..I don't know why!
