Theresa May Statement: June 8th General Election requested

We're probably overdue an invasion of France, it's pretty traditional.

From The Guardian liveblog:

If Theresa May is not going to announce an early election, it may be something equally big.

Her surprise resignation on health grounds? That seems highly improbable, but it would suit the Mail on Sunday’s Dan Hodges, who wrote a column just yesterday saying May was planning to quit.

There has also been speculation about May making an announcement relating to direct rule in Northern Ireland. But she has shown little interest in Northern Ireland affairs, and James Brokenshire, the Northern Ireland secretary, would be expected to make an announcement of this kind.

If she were going to call a snap election surely she'd have done it when she got in? Seems more likely they'd want to keep the current setup given they can announce pretty much anything and go up in the polls.

Probably an election for piece of mind so no blame on unelected this or that

Get someone else to do this Brexit shit might be on the cards as well.

Forgive my American ignorance but what does this even mean? An election for what?

A general election, all seats in the House of Commons would be dissolved and will be put to election. Remember that the governing executive is formed from the party that wins the most seats.

The black ministerial seal is missing from the podium, implying this is a party political statement rather than a matter of government (as an election would be).

Most likely candidate is now May's resignation.

Yeah. It is not going to be an election at this point. UK voters probably don't have an appetitie for another type of election and other elections are occuring in the next few weeks or so. If an election was going to be annouced it would be after those elections.

yeah, it probably is northern ireland

Local councils have already set their part of the bill, known as the district rate.

Mr Brokenshire said if there is no political deal by 18 April, he will bring forward legislation to enable a regional rate to be set.

Rates are property taxes paid by households and businesses that raise annual revenue of £1.2bn.

I don't get what this is either or why it's important.

Speculation everywhere.

NI have the power to form a devolved government, but they haven't been able to do so.

People are speculating that she will announce the U.K. Gov will assume direct rule over N.I as they haven't been able to get their shit together.

Possible but would expect that to be done more quietly than this.

Wouldn't a general election require a vote of no confidence?

Not necessarily. Either: two-thirds of the House of Commons votes in favour of an election, or one-half of the House of Commons votes for a Vote of No Confidence and no other government is successfully able to form, or one-half of the Commons followed by one-half of the Lords votes to repeal the Fixed Term Parliament Act.

First is most likely, seeing as Labour have said they'd support an early election.

I'm not sure what is more terrifying. A snap election which secures a bigger Tory majority or May stepping down and letting someone like Johnson take over.

Can you imagine she quits and someone else takes over, a real Brexit leaver, yikes.

She is a real brexiter leaver, she might have pretended to be a remainer during the campaign but since she seized power her true colours have surfaced, would rather have buffoon Johnson who might have ran the leave campaign but doesnt seem anywhere like as extreme as her

I think looking at the last few polls it's going to be a general election, so she will announce a bill of no confidence and move toward a June election. I maybe completely wrong but the lack of government crest suggests conservative announcement.
