Alien Covenant - Trailer 2

Hey Bobby, when you review a film how many times to you get to watch it and are your screenings provided or what

I only get the once, and I have to go to one of three theaters the studios tend to use for screening purposes here in town. Usually it's one of the littler screening rooms in the middle of the afternoon. Basically, the studio pays the theater to kill a screening for something that's making $10 total that day so they can put 10-15 critics in there to watch something early.

Then you go home, think about what you watched, and crank out anywhere from 300-3000 words (depending on whether you're writing for print or for online)

Although sometimes, for smaller/indie films, you're sent a screener copy on dvd (or given a password to access a file online) and in that case, you can watch/rewatch if you want. That's how I saw Shin Godzilla. I think I went back to that to doublecheck that I hadn't screwed up a detail, but I didn't rewatch the whole movie.

Nice, look forward to your review.

Thanks for the insight! And definitely looking forward to your review

Just saw a tv spot and it still says this is film is not yet rated. There's no chance they pull some bullshit and make this PG-13 right??

If anything, they're probably trying not to get an NC-17. I've heard this is one icky movie. Can't fucking wait!

Cool stuff. Looking forward to your review

Select Alamo Drafthouse locations are having special events as well.

https://drafthouse.com/event/aliens

Your link seems to be for Alien Day 2016 that Alamo Drafthouse participated in. Are my eyes missing something on that page for this year?

Not that I have an Alamo Drafthouse local to me in NJ, and if I hop over to NYC I have several Regal Alien Day options already listed on the Alien Universe site.

I'm starting to see tickets for Covenant going up local to me through Fandango. I'm hoping a Prometheus double feature pops up. If we're not getting Prometheus in theaters again, I need this Prometheus 4k UHD Blu-ray to come out sooner than later... maybe we'll get some news next week.

Nope, I just don't have the ability to read. Sorry, my bad, I don't know how I missed that.

If you explain it, it's not really lore anymore. It's just plain ol' story.

Which is really one of the biggest fuckin problems with this series.

Yup. One of the best parts of Alien 1 is the mystery. It never needed to be explained.

That being said, I'm still intrigued by how far Scott goes with the new one.

I lived with the mystery all my life and loved it but now I'm ready for some answers. If people don't like it then don't watch the movie, simple as that. The fact you're intrigued though means Ridley is doing something right.

Hmmm, I think if there are going to be sequels in the franchise maybe they won't possibly be direct sequels but actually take place in other parts of the the universe or maybe it'll be a prequel detailing Shaw's arrival on Paradise.

Anyway, if you slow down this video nigh completely you can see that there is a hologram towards the end. It's reminiscent of David discovering how to operate the Engineer ships and it appears as if there's a solar system on display. The second scene is shows two people in the cockpit/stasis chamber and it has that iconic engineer seat in the background. I can't help but think that Ripley is playing everyone and there won't be a sequel to this but probably a sequel to Aliens or Alien 3.

It seems like the ending for this is being the direct precursor to Alien with one of the passengers having an embryo implanted inside of them mid flight and the other possibly sleeping during the voyage. Considering that the crew of the Nostromo never figured out how to get the derelict operational/on-line maybe the crew member is still there on that planet. That also raises the question, why doesn't the company go back to LV-426 and just raid the ship for it's eggs and perform testing out there or somewhere in space without the worry of military/government intervention and no risk of outbreak outside of the space station that holds these tests?

It actually sounds kinda like Resurrection minus the genetic engineering.

The franchise should be able to do both though. Not every alien fan just cares for the mystique surrounding these creatures. There are some people, like myself, who love learning where the creatures came from and why they came to be. Some people hate exposition and some don't. I think exposition is fine so as long as the explanations are sensible and not highly unbelievable. For example, the Souls series has great lore. I think the story is nonexistent unless you go searching for it and even then you have to theorize and piece things together but there are things in the game that tells the player about happenings in the world. These things give more insight to the going on of the game and bring clarity to the story and I think they actively add to the lore and expand the mythos, not take away from it.

But I respect your opinion even if I don't agree with it. I personally feel that alien hasn't explained enough and the Engineers to add to the puzzle. Kinda like Shaw, I just have to know.

I'm most interested in hearing from critics pre-release what subgenres Covenant leans more towards, specifically what kind of/how much gun-toting action is in it, to have my expectations in check. That's my largest surface-level concern about the movie in regard to my own preferences - in most cases I'm not a fan of pew pew.

This isn't something I want to know about before I see the film myself, but my other concern is if the saga feels like it has a fixed end goal of literally showing what the Nostromo crew encountered now. I loved how open-ended Prometheus felt, like it could/would go beyond Alien. I need something more grand from these movies than just working towards the classic Xenomorph and derelict site.

I'll take a proper look at reviews after my second viewing or so.

This is literally the plot to Aliens.

Edit: After that they nuke the site from orbit.

Oh I forgot that the planet was the same...I don't know why it didn't click. Acheron, and they brought Ripley along because she had experience with the xenomorph or at least that's what Burke told her.

But why they'd go about it the way they did? They knew xenomorph eggs were on the planet. Why not send in trained professionals to retrieve and contain them and then conduct experiments off world or if you're going to do it on world, why not have a militaristic presence or at least some paramilitary types and scientists and subjects no one cares for? Why have colonists exposed to it...it's stupid and by the time you investigate you're dealing with a super shit storm. They knew the creatures life cycle and other intrinsic details so it doesn't make sense that they didn't go in prepared.

Conversely, I can spend my entire life with a good mystery, as, perhaps paradoxically, its existence is part of what makes the first film so satisfying to me. My intrigue with the new movie has more to do with my interest in seeing how batshit goofy Scott goes with this franchise than anything else.

That being said, I plan on seeing Alien: Covenant on opening night and sincerely hope it's a good movie.

You will have to wait for the movie after this one for explanations. Since that one is a prequel to this one to explain things that happen. No lie.

That's not true, this movie will also explain a lot. But of course Ridley plans to delve even deeper in future prequel/sequels, which I'm totally cool with. If there's a single cinematic universe I want, it's a fucking Alien one. It helps that Ridley is guiding it as he's the one that started this franchise to begin with. In my mind the man is a genius and can do little wrong so maybe I'm biased.

Ok I'm having no luck finding tickets online for Alien on 4.26, even in places where it's supposed to be screened. Is it still too early to be checking?

i love alien and aliens (and even kinda like alien 3) but i have a feeling this movie is going to be trash. maybe i still have a bad taste in my mouth from Prometheus (it was pretty fucking terrible). i hope i'm wrong but the trailers just reminds me of how Predators turned out :(

My girlfriend had to leave the showing of LIFE because it was too gross for her. What are the chances she can handle Covenant? Slim to none?
