Prey Demo: Opening Hour Thread: Everything is Going to Be OK

I have to say this is the first time I have tried out a demo and immediately want to a buy a game I had no knowledge of.

Absolute solid stuff so far.

I read that and if this is in the game I will buy it on this alone.
Some details on the hint
One of the audio logs is of a psych evaluation and the subject - one of the doctors on the station - is talking about a dream of a black abyss beyond the glass and a dark...thing swimming the void that wants to come to his side. Then the therapist shows him an image and the doctor reacts violently, implying the image is similar to what he sees in the dream.

Could be just an aside, but given the design of the Typhon, I'm going to wager that it's not

Very torn on this.

Basically everything outside of the combat is amazing. It looks & controls great on XBO, the interactivity is wonderful, the opening twist was great, and I really like the slow pace with a heavy emphasis on exploration. It's a super immersive world with killer aesthetics.

That combat tho... why do I have to spend my most frantic moments in the game facing the floor? Wrench versus Mimic mechanics are just frustrating, and even with the Gloo gun you still spend an inordinate amount of time swiveling your pov around your feet. Not fun.

I wanted this to be a day 1 purchase, but I think I'm going to wait for reviews.

... I'll still probably pick it up.
Going by what I've played and Rexatality's post about the weapons in the game, I dont think frantic combat is going to be a focus in this game; it seems like that kind of aggressive approach should be a last resort. It likely isn't going to be a System Shock or Bioshock in terms of style of combat.

How do you get the mimic ability to become objects? Am I missing something here? I've played this three hours + and don't have this yet. I feel like I've explored most of everything.

All this demo did was make me wanna go back to Mankind Divided, which gets far too much hate imo. The story and characters may not be the best but the graphics, gameplay and atmosphere are on another level.

Heh, thanks for making this comment. I passed on Mankind Divided when it came out but always meant to check it out at some point, you sparked my interest and I found it was only 16 bucks on Amazon so at that price I couldn't resist.

You need to have a Psychoscope in order to scan the Typhon creatures and learn their abilities

Which isn't available in the demo, in case you ask

That just makes this whole demo so much more confusing and bizarre. Why release a demo with input lag on PS4? Why release a demo where most people are going to be using a wrench for combat 90% of the time, if thats not the primary combat for most of the game?

Were these guys so in love with their game that they thought anyone seeing 20 minutes of the beginning would just fall in love and rush to go buy it? I mean this game should be RIGHT up my alley, sci fi is my favorite genre, I've played all the games similar to this, The Expanse is my favorite show of the past year, etc. and after 1 hour I just had to uninstall, I hated the combat and just didn't feel connected to the player character at all. By contrast I loved HZD after 20 minutes and always wanted more, more, more.

Its sad and unfortunate, all the little things matter in a big game release like this and someone dropped the ball hard near the finish line, and its not like Mass Effect Andromeda where the game was beyond saving, just someone with some good decision making and common sense was missing.

Yup, the agency that MD gave the player made it one of my favourite games of late. I explored areas of Prague on my own before being required to by the story or side missions, and was pleased by how much they let me access. I was able to figure out side plots before they unraveled just through the environmental storytelling, and that was great. Don't get me started on Palisade Bank. Shame about the half baked story, though.

I am usually skeptical about hub worlds and their lack of focus, but if Prey manages to do what MD did for me it will be amazing. Prey seems like it's on the right path, and I really hope we are locked out of areas due to lacking enough neuromods. It's nice to have multiple ways to enter a room so we don't feel punished for a specific play style, but when there is always a vent, keypad, or heavy obstruction it gets a little dull. I welcome the frustration of not accessing everything in one go.

I kind of stopped using the wrench that much once I realized you could carry turrets around. Place one at an entrance or overlooking an area and you don't have to worry about Mimics

Why wouldn't wrench be the primary combat? You get the stun gun, gloo gun, and shotgun pretty early in the demo.

Rex's post shows that majority of tools are ones that delay, slow, stun, and distract enemies. The wrench, pistol, shotgun, beam, grenades, and powers seem to be the only ones that do direct damage. Which ties in what the devs said about the place not being a combat zone so you don't get many guns or find much ammo.

Yeah I think I was def approaching it like Bioshock, partially because the game does such a wonderful job of bringing back those Rapture vibes.

Even though I put the demo down feeling frustrated with it, I can't stop thinking about it. Overall I really loved the 2 hours I put into it.

I think I'm in.

!?!

Well that would be very helpful.

I didn't really explore the skill tree much, and I've been reading that your movement & agility can be increased as well.

Yeah, there are powers similar to
plasmids in Bioshock.
This is one of them. You can activate it by pressing L2 and it slows down time so you have enough time to hit these little bastards :P

i just realized something in the demo
when you chose the female dr morgan, the
person is talking to you is a women
.
when you chose the male dr morgan, the p
erson is talking to you is a man
.
i think that
the person is talking to you is actually you,but maybe a recording or your mind was put in someplace or you are just copy not the real body and the real body is dead, that's explain the 3rd test when you see they didn't see anything or something like that, you are not real human, you are just one of those shades.
Damn, I hate guessing on things like this and getting it right. Ruins the fun.

I think the story of this game might disappoint because the one thing that I suppose is meant to intrigue most people, is something you might be able to guess easily within the first 20-30 minutes because of how obvious it is. I do hope it's not what I guess it is but the 4Chan leak that showed up last month says otherwise.

I've messed around a bit more with the wrench and it doesn't seem like the wonky aiming or erratic enemies are causing most of the trouble I keep reading about, although they contribute, of course.

What I see more as the culprit is Prey's unique take on melee hit detection. It's almost a gun-like hitscan where your reticule has to be pretty much right on top of what you want to hit. In almost every other game melee is treated as a rather large AOE, which obviously makes hitting things a lot easier.

I think that's a pretty cool approach to melee and could work really well if aiming wasn't so stiff. Here's hoping that they can work their magic and fix it work launch.

If they make it that obvious, ideally it isn't going to be the main twist, just an early reveal, then moving onto more stuff. Kind of like Soma

I feel like they jumped into the core game to quickly. The loop at the start would of been awesome trying to find a way out of it.

Also the trailer shows a guy looking into a mirror repeatedly. In the game, you can't see yourself in the mirror. That was way to infuriating...

Boy the combat really, really, isn't any fun at all. It's a demo, and it might not be representative of the finished game, but boy does it cool my expectations.

The combat in this demo consists of being wary of various objects, making note of odd placements. Sometimes you'll walk right by them, perhaps examining an nonthreatening coffee mug or something, and bam, you'll probably hear the obnoxious combat music before you see a mimic. On higher difficulties the best thing to do at this point is probably to just run. If you stick around, you have to wrestle with the controls, and taking on multiple little mimics at once just doesn't feel good. Nothing about this system feels good to me. The mimics aren't scary so much as they're tiring. The end result is a game you walk through paying attention to rubbish rather than the actual art.

It's a shame too, because I think the world they've set up has potential.
I also appreciate the option to choose between playing a man or a woman, even if it probably doesn't matter in this type of story.

Haven't really heard anything about this game besides the few people on Twitter that I follow that have worked on it. Tried the demo in earnest and found it just okay. Combat and inventory management right off the bat was a little overwhelming. Hitting the little jumping black things was super annoying and I couldn't really tell if my hits were registering. I can see this being a rewarding game, but maybe not for me. I was on the fence and I think the demo did a disservice.

I know a lot of folks in here have been down on the enemy AI tracking, and I definitely get it in spots, but I also found that it surprised me a few times to feel interesting and dynamic? Or at the very least the potential for it.

I died to the
phantom's one shot lightning whatever thing in the trauma center
a few times, and so I decided to just reload and explore elsewhere and return after I'd beefed up a little, gotten some more bullets, medkits, etc. I ended up going into
the conference room across from Morgan's office and in the scuffle of wrenching the mimics in there it alerted the phantom from the trauma center and he came up to check out what was going on. It was honestly terrifying to watch his awareness meter track up the stairs and then watch him peek in the window and open the door. Even trying to avoid him, I had to fight and kill him anyway, just somewhere else.
Was pretty cool, to be honest.

Edit: Added spoiler tags, so sorry.

Well, CDKEYS are sending out cd keys, got mine earlier & preload starts on the 3rd.

They made me verify payment method by taking a picture of my card with a timestamp next to it, so I guess they're getting a lot of dodgy purchases.

This game just seems incredibly average to me. I can see it hitting 40$ within a couple weeks of it coming out. The opening twist was cool but combat felt meh, and I had no urge to play it tbh

Had a really bad first impression with the demo, but I had a much better time after picking it back up for a 2nd try. It seems questionable to release a demo that opens with melee combat on small enemies with such bad input lag, but it really hits its stride once it opens up.

Remaining cautiously optimistic, but definitely no longer a day 1 purchase for me until it's confirmed that the input lag and some other issues (audio mixing) are cleared up.

Any news about pc performance? I'd like to jump in day one, but still don't feel confident about the port.

All the people who think this game is average....do you think Bioshock is an average game?
Because combat and movement is similar to Bioshock. And this game still is one of the best ever made imo.

And I'm not talking about that 60 FPS remaster.

Oh btw: Prey (full version) just got an update on PS4, lol. No idea what it does though.
