Discrepancy between the MCU and the comics notwithstanding, that line is just one of many examples of Ego couching his true self behind a facade of humble affability.

What does it mean to go "full-on memes"?
I think in the context of that paragraph probably an indictment on specific scenes or lines crafted with the express intention of being gifs and other viral oddities down the line.

We really have no idea what the cosmic hierarchy looks like in the MCU, what the Celestials are, and how they fit into the grander scheme of things.

They may well be conflating the Celestials with the rest of the non-abstract cosmic forces. Guys like Galactus could probably get the same title - stray Celestials that aren't part of the "core order" of funky armored entities.

It's garbage criticism. They'd be throwing The Godfather under the bus with that train of thought. A movie being quotable isn't a creative sin.

Absolutely loved the movie.on par if not better then the first due to way more backstory and character development of the other teammembers. And Russel was on fire. Also starlord shooting ego after he told him what he had done without a single pause was so refreshing.

I wished they had used another term other than Celestial. Sucks if that is just going to be a catch all for the freaky stuff

One more thing, Marvel marketed this movie without giving up most of the plot. Hell the majority of trailer footage comes from the firs 10 minutes of the movie. Other studios could learn from that

Yep that was such a nice surprise, when they meet Ego and you realize most of the trailer stuff is from the damn beginning of the movie.

After sleeping on it, definitely love this movie more than the first. Top 5 MCU for me probably.

I LOVE how character driven this movie is and how little it gives a fuck about advancing the plot of the overall MCU. Its exactly what we need more of after the Thanos plot wraps up.

They really mastered this.

I loved when they just added random stuff in the Civil War Trailer that totally mislead us, even when it came to the final scenes.

Gonna be fun if it's the same for that "spoilery" Spider-Man trailer. Although I guess Sony handled that.

Let's be honest, Cosmic Marvel can be a real clusterfuck when it comes to all the different beings and Gods and such. If this is them trying to simplify it for general audiences, I don't blame them.

I think the small g line was just Ego acknowledging that he isn't on the same tier as more powerful Celestials, like the one we saw in Vol 1.

I'm excited to see what other info we get on MCU cosmic beings with Ragnarok.

It's a reference to the original Guardians of the Galaxy.

Stallone - Starhawk (Flying Yellow/Purple Dude)
Michael Rosenbaum - Martinex (Crystal Dude)
Michelle Yeoh - Aleta (Fire Hair)
Ving Rhames - Charlie-27 (Big White Dude)
Ving Rhames is such a good pick for Charlie. I saw Martinex earlier in the movie and didn't connect the dots but when I noticed that long shot of Rhames I was like "Holy shit, that's Charlie! Oh shit, it's all of the old Guardians!"

Speaking of the OG Guardians, does anyone have a screenshot of that team when they brought them altogether?

I am still sad that we didnt got a look at Eternity.
Wasnt this the second time he was namedropped? Or who was that in Dr Strange?

Sony has a history of showing too much in their trailers so I'll be incredibly surprised if that's the case.

Marvel is so damn good with their advertising, for the most part. Didn't spoil Giant-Man in the trailers or commercials for Civil War until it was out, I don't think they showed the awesome "backwards" final battle in Doctor Strange and even Ant-Man had a lot of surprises despite the commercials showing some stuff I didn't want to know beforehand such as Falcon being in it. (Though I understand they needed to try and sell a movie called "Ant-Man" to the general moviegoer.)

Speaking of that trailer they pull the classic move of using dialogue not in the final film to misdirect. In this instance Ayesha's dialogue is fashioned here to obviously point to her and the Sovereign as the primary villains of this film and hiding Ego in plain sight.

"I see it within you... Fear, Jealousy, Betrayal. It is our duty to cleanse the universe of this weakness."

Also looking back, when people said they were wincing on Yondu and Rocket killing the Ravagers... do remember that these Ravagers also killed other people in the ship. At that point they had abandoned Yondu and basically had crossed the line.

They deserved it, but DAMN. That scene was brutal.

Is it really that hard to understand?
They aimed this movie 100% at the reddit/imgur/tumblr/social media crowd who caused the first movie to go "viral" through in-jokes to begin with.

One of the biggest overblown "memes" from the first movie was Groot (particularly baby Groot and/or dancing Groot) and guess what the movie opens with? Baby dancing Groot. Then proceeds to have an overabundance of Groot throughout.

Drax was overused as well, not to mention the whole movie being brought down by dumb joke sequences even when they weren't necessary, just for maximum viral potential.

It's like if Valve had released Portal 2 with the entire script based around Cake Is A Lie jokes because that's what was popular before.

It was tryhard and took away from the movie overall.

I was like holy shit so much death in one scene.
But after what they did to Groot though...

That doesn't make it okay to brutally (and needlessly) murder them. The way the movie treats the whole scene is pretty cynical.

Yep. I'm more than content with letting the Avengers flicks doing most of the status quo changes while the individual films are largely self contained.

Hopefully Thor Ragnarok is much of the same way.

Just seen it. Amazing movie. Yes, it's more of the same, but more of the awesome same the first movie was. GotG on steroids. Definitely in my top 5 of best MCU movies, probably even superhero movies.

Nah, Yondu was totally resigned and emotionless during the scene. It was like the end of Old Yella, he didn't want to do it. But he knew it had to be done.

We been through this before.

There's three extended Groot scenes if we count the intro. All his other appearances are short bits here and there. He practically disappears after the intro until the scene with the fin. The Groot complaints are completely overblown.

There are 3 Groot scenes calm ya ass down.

The movie was not aimed at a social media crowd, it was just an action comedy like the first one.

Sorry but this doesn't make sense. People like jokes and funny stuff, doesn't mean it's aimed at memelords. My sister doesn't even know what is a meme and she laughted from start to end.

It's just a half comedy half adventure film.

The movie is a comedy so I don't understand why you're complaining about "joke sequences." Dancing Groot isn't so much a "meme" as he was something extremely popular barely used in the first movie that got more payoff in the sequel. Groot probably had the smallest role of all the Guardians so I don't really get the complaint of him being overused.

Also complaining about meme culture and using "tryhard" unironically...

At a certain point this becomes a larger question in the broader pop culture discussion of the degrees and circumstances of violence depicted in media and our individual tolerance for what is deemed acceptable.
Yeah, if Yondu killing his crew that was gonna kill him is ununacceptable, then a lot of stuff in other movies is unacceptable
I didn't get the beef Groot had with Drax. I chalk it up to being Baby Groot being an asshole
Baby Groot is an asshole. That's it
